A Serbian passenger was injured after nearly being sucked out of a cabin window in mid-air on a Ryanair flight from Thessaloniki to Memmingen. Ryanair flight FR1879, operated by a Boeing 737-800, turned back shortly after departure after part of a damaged engine detached and struck a cabin window, causing it to shatter and partially sucking out part of the passenger. The injured 61-year-old was taken to Thessaloniki's AHEPA Hospital after the aircraft landed safely. He is expected to undergo a CT scan to determine whether he sustained any fractures. Witnesses said the man was left hanging head first out of the window as far as his shoulders for several minutes, before other passengers on the flight managed to pull him back inside. They noted that a loud bang was heard followed by the window breaking and oxygen masks falling from the ceiling shortly after the B737 had taken off. They believe the window was smashed by pieces of the jet's engine - although Ryanair has not commented on this.
In a statement, Ryanair said its Friday morning flight from the Greek city of Thessaloniki to Germany's Memmingen returned "shortly after take-off when a passenger window dislodged inflight". It continued, "The aircraft landed normally and passengers returned to the terminal. One passenger requested and received medical assistance on the ground in Thessaloniki".
Gosh. Glad he is ok and wishing him a speedy recovery.

DeleteDuring their existence many legacy airlines and the airlines they've grown out from have sadly had fatal crashes, although all of them are safe and highly professional: Some of them include: Lufthansa Flight 2904, Swissair Flight 111, Crossair Flight 3597, Lauda Air Flight 004, Air France Flight 447, Air France Flight 4590, Air France Flight 296, SAS Flight 686, British Airtours Flight 2867, KLM Cityhopper Flight 433, Olympic Aviation Flight 545
Thessaloniki flights are actually much more expensive than that, especially in summer.

DeleteVery similar incident happened to Southwest Airlines. Lady died in that. So this person is very fortunate to have survived, could have been a tragedy, especially if plane was at higher altitude.
ReplyDeleteThe window broke due to an uncountained engine failure. So he is extremely lucky that a piece of engine that came flying only broke the window instead of hitting him.

И како ће објаснити да су проблем са мотором имали на сат времена од Солуна, у реону Скопља? Зашто нису имали принудно слетање у Скопљу? И питање да ли би дошло до проблема са прозором. Ту нису чиста посла са безбедносним процедурама.

DeleteA chilling addition to this - the same aircraft was operating a flight from Thessaloniki to Sarajevo the night before and returned to Thessaloniki shortly into the flight. The flight to Sarajevo was then canceled and probably it was an AOG situation the night before.
