PHOTOS: Macedonia upgrades air traffic control systems


Macedonia’s air navigation services provider M-NAV has put a new Air Traffic Management (ATM) system into operation, while a new radar at Skopje Airport is in the final stages of testing. The radar, installed during 2025, is expected to become fully operational this month or October. Transport Minister Aleksandar Nikoloski said the two systems will improve the safety, security and efficiency of air traffic management across Macedonian airspace.

The upgrade comes amid strong growth in air traffic. A total of 173.000 aircraft movements were handled through Macedonian airspace during the first half of 2026, including both overflights and aircraft using the country’s airports. This represents an increase of 12.2% on last year, 23% compared to 2024 and 27% against 2023. The new ATM system was supplied by Italian aerospace and defence company Leonardo.

      Neither it is the case here. Macedonia has one of the worst air traffic oversights in Europe filled by political apointees from minority parties in Macedonia. Macedonia purchased this system more than a year ago and had not installed it up until now. There have been serious security breaches in Macedonian air traffic control where an air traffic controller was beat up in themiddle of the night, radar outages etc.

      Not only that died last year , it did not cover the whole teritory and the whole air space of the country. Now the new radar covers the whole air space.
