Construction of the railway line connecting Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport with the city's main railway station is progressing, with work now underway on the final seven kilometres of the 18.3-kilometre route. Meanwhile, the first of nine new trainsets (pictured above and further below) that will operate on the line has been assembled in China.

Construction of the railway is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, with testing expected to begin in early 2027 ahead of its planned opening in March or April. The line, which will be dedicated exclusively to passenger services, will accommodate trains travelling at speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour. Preparatory works for the new railway station at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport have been completed, with construction of the facility now underway.

The new service will make the following stops: Beograd Centar (the city's main railway station) - New Belgrade (connection to the high-speed Novi Sad rail link) - Tošin bunar - Zemun - Altina - Zemun Polje (connection to the high-speed Subotica rail link) - Singidunum - Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport - Surčin - National Stadium (EXPO 2027). Trains are planned to operate every thirty minutes, with frequencies increasing to every fifteen minutes during peak periods.

In parallel, a new roundabout and access road are being constructed near Air Serbia's new headquarters and the Aviation Museum. The infrastructure will provide a direct connection between the motorway and the future airport railway station, allowing passengers to access the facility without using the main road leading to the airport terminal, thereby helping to reduce congestion.

A factory acceptance ceremony for the new electric multiple-unit trains was held yesterday at the CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles manufacturing facility in Changchun, China. A total of nine trainsets, each capable of accommodating 380 passengers, have been ordered for the new service. The first is scheduled for delivery next month, with all nine expected to arrive in Belgrade by March 2027.

Thank God they didn't write "Beograd Srbija" on the trains, that would so gross.

I am pretty sure that no country.in Europe could finish 18 km of railway in 1,5 years .This is close to miracle

It’s almost entirely through fields, and it’s not HSR, almost anyone can do it in 1.5 years. The only difficult bit is crossing Surcin, and yeah, props to doing it on time.

Yes, yes, of course. Piece of cake. There are just three overpasses(one 2 km long), 4 train stations and goes directly through municipality of Surcin. Most of EU countries couldn't even do expropriation in 1,5 years, not to finish it completely.

More money is being spent on re-building the Arlington bridge in Winnipeg. And it will take a total of 7 years to get that built.

Where is, or will, Belgrade Airport’s train station going to be located? Underground beneath the main terminal?

above ground, towards the side of the cargo terminal. where a potential link between the never-to-be second runway would have stood.

Wondering if they could link cargo depot with railway? Cargo trains may be needed in future.

Cargo rail links are pretty rare, i guess it’s not economically viable. Probably because one plane of cargo easily fits onto 1-2 trucks, trains are just too big.

Sure, but railway passes literally 100 meters from the railway. It could be used for jet fuel, airplane parts or cargo deliveries.

Hong Kong HKG and Memphis MEM are massive airports by cargo traffic yet they don't have rail links to their cargo facilities (not passenger, just cargo links). Belgrade cargo will be more than fine without it.

Why do they need 9 trainsets? With given frequencies 2-4 should be enough. Do they plan to use it on BGVoz routes? Or just to run double trains for expo?

Slightly off-topic (apologies) but this rail connection is badly needed, so great news indeed. As most Belgraders would know, the main road approaching the airport is currently closed (roadworks), and it took me over 2 hours to reach the airport (from Novi BG, Bulevar Umetnosti, to be precise) the other day (on the actual approach to the airport, there were chaotic scenes of folks getting off cars/taxis/you name it and run towards the terminal...).

Yes. Sometimes you just have to endure the fact that if a major new ring road is being built so that it will actually reduce traffic at the airport, you will have congestion during works. Airport has posted numerous warnings to start your journey early. It will be done in 2 weeks. It is not different anywhere else in the world.

The issue that always existed with this is that it was not integrated into the main Belgrade-Budapest railway route. That would have been a game-changer.
