Air Serbia is preparing an extensive programme to mark 100 years of commercial aviation in 2027, with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner simulator among the attractions planned for its dedicated Expo pavilion. The celebrations will also include special aircraft liveries, a documentary and a commemorative book, alongside further enhancements to the airline’s Elevate frequent flyer programme and onboard product. Speaking to EX-YU Aviation News, the carrier’s CEO, Jiri Marek, said the centenary would provide an opportunity to celebrate its history while showcasing its future development.
"We will have a pavilion at Expo. We should receive the keys in the next couple of days. The pavilion will be dedicated to 100 years of aviation, with a lot of activities. We will have OEM weeks, where different aircraft manufacturers will have events", Mr Marek said.
One of the planned attractions will be developed in cooperation with Boeing. "What I can already disclose is that that for the opening of the pavilion, we will have a Boeing 787 Dreamliner simulator for a couple of days, together with Boeing. Boeing played a significant part in 100 years of our history".
The CEO also confirmed plans for two aircraft to carry special centenary liveries, although further details are being kept under wraps. "We will have two aircraft in special liveries for the centenary. We will have a documentary movie. We will have a book. There will be many things. I don't want to disclose too many now", he said.
Mr Marek emphasised that the celebrations would recognise the broader history of aviation in the region. "We are very well aware of our legacy. We are very well aware of the people throughout those 100 years and what they did in this region, and we are proud of it. We are paying attention not to prefer any particular period, but to really cover these 100 years of aviation in this part of Europe".
Meanwhile, the airline's Elevate frequent flyer programme is gaining members at a faster rate than initially anticipated. The carrier expects to surpass 200.000 this week, compared to its original forecast of 280,000 within the first twelve months.
"The dynamics are definitely much faster, which is very positive. It might be one of the reasons why we have had double-digit growth from July. Up to the end of June, we were growing 3%, and from July it has been more than 10%. That kind of corresponds with the launch of the frequent flyer programme", Mr Marek explained.
The airline intends to introduce further functionality, including dynamic redemption, family accounts and co-branded bank cards. "Soon we will introduce the so-called dynamic reward system. You will no longer need to call the call centre when you want to use your points. Either you have enough points to fully pay for the ticket, or you pay partly with points and partly with another form of payment".
He added, "One of the next important milestones for the Elevate program will be the introduction of a co-branded payment card in partnership with Banca Intesa. The card will provide members with additional opportunities to earn points through their everyday spending while further enhancing the overall value proposition of the program. We are working closely with our partner on the final implementation phases and look forward to introducing this new benefit to our members”.
Air Serbia also intends to expand the programme through partnerships with other airlines, although this remains a longer-term objective. "The airlines are contacting us. They are willing to start. But we need to first properly build all the phases that we have before allowing other airlines to participate. The difficulty is that the majority of systems are still mileage-based, not spend-based. But definitely, it's a direction we want to go".
The CEO believes Elevate could ultimately become an important source of revenue for the carrier. "That's the intention. That's also the reason why we introduced it as a kind of virtual currency. You can buy the last seat on the plane with points at that price. Basically, ours is a spend-based system. The more you spend, the more you get".
In parallel, the airline is continuing to improve its onboard catering, having recently introduced new meal cycles on short-haul flights. Air Serbia is also preparing to relocate to its new headquarters near Belgrade Airport ahead of Expo 2027. The development includes a hotel, which will be operated by an external hotel chain. "It's going pretty much according to plan. We are confident that we should be able to move in before Expo. The hotel has also received the construction permit recently, and construction is going according to plan", Mr Marek concluded.

Bravo JU!
ReplyDelete787 simulator!? Maybe a sign of things to come
ReplyDeleteWould make sense. The B787-9 would be the right fit for JU
DeleteWasn't Boeing just pitching the 787 to JU a few months ago?
DeleteYes
Deletehttps://www.exyuaviation.com/2026/05/boeing-engages-air-serbia-on-future.html
What a nonsense??!? 787-9 is far too large for JU and requires completely different type rating crews and maintenance. That would be suicidal move for JU
DeleteThey are not planning to. Article from this Monday
DeleteDespite its continued long-haul expansion, Air Serbia is not currently planning to enlarge its four-strong Airbus A330-200 fleet. Instead, it intends to focus on optimising utilisation and potentially increasing frequencies across its existing intercontinental network.
https://www.exyuaviation.com/2026/11/air-serbia-ceo-outlines-miami-toronto.html
@09:47 the 789 carries around 27 more passengers, its not 'far too large'. Indeed it needs a whole change on some aspects but one day JU will have to change its A330s and the 787 is a fine aircraft so its far from a suicidal move, if other factors align.
Delete09.50
Delete+1000
Actually its 40 pax difference. And JU is struggling to fill current A332 on most routes, not to mention larger planes. Secondly, B787 is significantly more expensive to lease. Thirdly, it takes only few days of extra training for A32x pilot to get A33x type rating, which relaxes crew management a lot. So yes, it would be quite a suicidal move
Delete"And JU is struggling to fill current A332 on most routes"
DeleteThey send you over the monthly data? Their load factor last month was 84% btw
Please don’t play smart. A332 is flying year around. There are barely 1pw ORD in the winter, CAN is yet to decide. You would like them closed?
DeleteNo, I would like you to stop playing smart by making up that they are struggling to fill anything as if you have any data whatsoever. The load factor on the Chicago winter flights is actually better than in summer :)
Delete@10:36 depends on layout mate. Irrespective, these are plans taken in line with medium-term plans. Sure a 789 might be 'too big' today, but JU has a dense, and increasing denser feeder network. You forget that this is not something they will do until the early 2030s.
DeleteThe other option will be A330neo which seats even more I believe.
Personally i would like the A339, but either are fine birds.
10:43 oh, sorry, youARE smart. Hopefully Marek will proceed with your proposal, due to high ORD demand in the winter. Maybe he should consider even B747 for that route.
Delete10:53
Mate, 4 years from now everything is possible, I am not writing about far future. For now, A332 seems perfect fit for JU. Maybe consider one A333 for JFK in the summer and some leisure destinations in the winter
Businesses look to the future, mate.
DeleteI'm pretty sure Boeing just wants to show their coolest toy at the EXPO, and that's it. After all, it's EXPO and not JU showcase.
DeleteHave you even read the article? JU has a large stand at Expo, it is one of the main sponsors. And without JU there would be no Boeing simulator display.
Delete@15:35 its a specialised Expo around the rather abstract theme of 'play' I guess aviation counts as that for many people so it makes good sense for JU to be there. I don't think its stated if Boeing itself is going to be behind the simulator, there are private ones that can be rented and brought in. Because it says 'a few days' this likely means Boeing has nothing to do with it and the airline will rent it.
DeleteIt is a Boeing simulator from the aircraft manufacturer Boeing, not rented from a third-party.
DeleteEvery EXPO, including thematic, is about modernisation and innovation. Therefore, we can expect a lot wider exhibition than pure music and play as a theme.
DeleteEveryone who is saying that this is unrealistic for air serbia to get a 787, I just want you guys to look at kurt hoffman newly published article on aviation week with an interview with Marek about how they are assessing middle aged 787-8 😁😁
DeleteYep. I think it would be a great thing.
DeleteBring back the JAT livery from the 1980s for 2027 and people will stand in line to fly with
ReplyDelete+1
DeletePlease Mr. Marek, paint one aircraft into retro JAT egg livery please!
DeleteCurrent JU livery is the most beautiful second is the flame from the 1990s. That was truly stunning livery, much nicer than the egg one.
Deletesilver body with egg is 3rd?? pff its unbeatable!
Deletebest in its history.
The flame reminds me to our nations being in flame. Egg 1970 and 1980s livery with all the great network would definitely be the Nr. 1
DeletePlease bring the egg from the original YU-AMA livery on one a330
Delete"two aircraft to carry special centenary liveries"
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see this!
Tired of Expo liveries though, and don't know who's the idiot who put "Beograd, Srbija" on the stickers instead of English.
Delete^ "Beograd, Srbija" is the official logo
Deletehttps://expobelgrade2027.org/sr
@09:37 the liveries are jolly and fun. Although i won't set foot in that Expo, I think the liveries are really nice!
DeleteБеоград, Србија would make more sense…
Delete^Yes, that way almost no one can understand it.
Delete^ Very few passengers really care tbh. Some people will fuss over the shade of blue of the sky..really.
DeleteFinally something good, but maybe too late. In the past they have done a lot of things to minimise the history milestones, scrapping first B737 and other stuff
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how 'important' these milestones are to those outside the aviation geek world. But yes its very nice to see them taking it seriously, particularly as it comes at a period we can all agree the airline is maturing and well run.
DeleteThat's crazy that they have 200,000 Elevate members already and expected 280,000 over one year period. I can't wait until they introduce online award ticket because calling the call centre is a nuisance. It really depends who you get on the line. The first time I redeemed points around a month ago I got a lady which was so professional we finished everything within 5 minutes over the phone. This week when I wanted to redeem I got someone who seemed to know nothing about the procedure. She first told me I could do it online, then took 15 minutes to check everything and then told me someone would call me in an hour when they prepare the ticket. They never called so I called again 4 hours later and after another 20 minutes got issued the ticket.
ReplyDeleteI assume that one of the special liveries will be JAT's egg. The other could maybe be Aeroput?
ReplyDeleteExciting stuff. Looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteCould anyone with insight explain what this means: "...having recently introduced new meal cycles on short-haul flights"?
ReplyDeleteI think they mean new menus for the winter
DeleteIt means Air Serbia has updated the menus it rotates through on short haul flights.
Delete^ In business class.
DeleteWell obviously, there are no menus in economy other than long haul. Still on Air Serbia you get a choice between a sweet and savoury snack in economy, which is more than most airline in Europe. Also they have actually changed up the contents of the sandwiches on longer intra European flights so there is a bit more variety.
DeleteSandwiches on the longer European flights haven't changed. The only change is reducing the previous 4 options down to 3.
DeleteWhat aircraft types will get the special livery?
ReplyDeleteI'm only guessing here, but it would make sense that it is the incoming planes because those will go to the paint shop. So probably A320 and E195.
DeleteIt would be nice if they had one on the A330. The expo ends in August so realistically they can replace one of those Expo liveries then.
DeleteAn A330 with the JAT egg livery would be cool to see.
DeleteAlso, an ATR painted in the Aeroput livery would be great with a special flight to Zagreb to mark the 100th anniversary.
They will not paint A330 in the peak of the season. Please relax
DeleteWhere do you see that anyone is not relaxed?
DeleteSeems someone is tense, bringing up very stupid ideas. If they're gonna paint any plane, its have to be done during winter maintenance, January-March period.
DeleteIt won't be an A330. They will paint two incoming planes which makes sense since they are going to the paint shop prior to delivery and have a painting slot, which, believe it or not, is not easy to get these days like everything else in the aviation industry.
DeleteThe can do “Red Star” and “Partizan” as a special livery’s .
DeleteA 787 simulator for a couple of days? The queue will probably be loong. Please make it possible to book a slot.
ReplyDeleteTimed slots would make sense if it’s only there for a couple of days.
DeleteFamily accounts are the one feature I’m waiting for. Four of us fly together twice a year and end up with four balances that are each too small to do anything with.
ReplyDeleteGood that an international chain will run the hotel. Wondering which one it could be.
ReplyDeleteIts hilton
DeleteNext August they can replace those Expo stickers on all planes with some anniversary sticker, like they had for 95 years.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of liveries, will we finally get new liveries on the 2 expo planes after expo ends in mid-August. They said years ago they already know the two people which will be on these planes.
ReplyDeleteYes. Can't wait to see who they got planned!
DeleteProbably Milankovic and Andric
DeleteIt's nice that Elevate is gaining pace faster than anticipated, but they seem horribly understaffed on it. I have been waiting for them to retrocredit my first flights for two months now, with no resolution in sight and no communication on the topic. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised. I got all my retro point claims credited over a month ago. Maybe write to them on social media, either X or linkedin. They are quickest to respond and do something there.
DeleteYeah, you can bump yourself to front of the queue this way, but still does not solve the understaffing issue for everyone else. They need more than one or two people on this for sure - and it’s not like they missed the adoption rate by much to be honest. They should have been much better prepared.
DeleteIn addition, I don’t see proactive recognition of FFP privileges almost anywhere.
I agree that they should get more people to work on that.
DeleteI'm bronze status. It does not get you many benefits but one is priority check-in, which comes in handy during the peaks. Had no issue checking in and them putting priority tag on my baggage.
Love it
ReplyDeleteTwo retro liveries? I’d do one retro and let a Serbian designer come up with something completely new for the other.
ReplyDelete200,000 sign-ups sounds good. Now tell us how many have actually earned points and how many have spent them. Those are three very different numbers.
ReplyDeleteIndustry standards say that between 8% to 35% of total membership points or miles are ever actively used or redeemed. So take that a guideline. Most people do not ever redeem the points because most people do not fly often.
DeleteWould be nice if you cann book in the Elevate programm directly from the website. Now, it often says: call the service hotline.
ReplyDeleteStuff like lounge access, extra luggage etc.
It coming in the next few weeks
DeleteDevelopment and launch of Elevate program has been the weakest move of JU in this decade. Working on it for years and launching it without being finalized and finished was not necessary. The celebration plan looks nice and appropriate.
ReplyDeleteAs people have noted. The average passenger doesn't give a damn about FF programmes. Sure, business people might, but with the greatest of respect that is less important than a Serbian based airline establishing high-quality, reliable transit which JU have done, and continue to do very well. It might be bad (not sure, don't use it and wont use it), but i think we can all agree that other aspects of business have been well thought through.
DeleteYou couldn't be more wrong. Loyalty programmes are what get people back to an airline. That's the goal. Just look at literally any successful full service airline.
DeleteWhat people don't care about is those programmes like in WizzAir, where you pay to them. lol
Actually you are not completly correct. Airlines might get lots of people signing up, but that does mean lots of people actually utilise them. For some passengers (I assume you) that kind of thing is attractive. Perhaps you are rich, or travel alot or just an av geek. However the average passenger cares about price/routing before things like this kick in.
DeleteWizz air, Ryanair or Easy are, by every marker, incredibly successful airlines despite not having FF programmes.
They just announced they surpassed 200,000 for the ffp
I will come to the Expo just for that simulator. That sounds awesome
ReplyDeleteI wonder how much it will cost
DeleteOr maybe ot costs nothing if Boeing is trying to secure any sort of order.
DeleteWell if they won't charge anything they will not let people 'play' on it for very long. I assume it will be a Fixed-Base Lifesize simulator rather than a Level D simulator which cannot be moved with any ease and can command hundreds of dollars per hour.
DeleteThey should look into a cooperation with the Revolut bank when ready. Maybe the bank is not accessible for Serbs but it could be an asset for the international routes with 80 million customer base.
ReplyDeleteAs for the liveries, I really hope one of the two will be the silver body one
A bank that isnot useable by Serbs is hardly likely to make the cut...currently the banking issue is a mute point in Serbia.
DeleteI get it but there's an equal number of us Serbs living abroad. Apart from that it could be a valuable asset for tourists and international transfers. If anything, simply as an ad, served to millions of eyes daily. There are 53 airlines available, and in my mind, Air Serbia deserves a spot in there.
DeleteThat 737 would have been quite an exhibit for the centenary :(
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more
DeleteCelebration of 100 years is going to be epic! Can't wait for special livery and any announcement related to Boeing 787!
ReplyDeleteThere won't be any 787 announcement.
DeleteLet them dream a lil. But yeah its a lovely thing they are doing with liveries.
DeleteAir Serbia widebody fleet will eventually have to move to variants with newer generation engines. There is no urgency in making that shift now, but is reasonable to expect some decisions in the coming years. Air Serbia stated earlier this year: "Our main strategy is not to take aircraft when we need them, but when there is a good deal and we have communicated that to lessors".
DeleteIn case there is no good deal on horizon for Airbus aircraft with new generation engines, but there is a good deal with Boeing, that dream might have to reconsidered.
My dream is wake up one day and read the news about Air Serbia exploring the possibility of acquiring new types in the future, including the Boeing 787. One day that dream will come true. I don't know when, but I'll wait patiently.
DeleteSweet. Well one day it will happen for sure:) When i was young A300s and MD11s were considered cutting edge and I'm not that old. Fleets and airlines change over time and that is fascinating and what makes aviation an interesting world.
DeleteCan they first add the most basic option to Elevate - updating your email address?
ReplyDeleteIt's not possible online and apparently not even in the rubbish system they use for the programme. Yikes.
Wouldnt A350 be the logical choice?
ReplyDeleteThey cannot afford that.
DeleteActually, Il -96, Il-62, lovely machines
ReplyDeleteOh that really would be fun.
DeleteA330-900 would be best.
ReplyDelete
