United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby has named its Star Alliance partner Croatia Airlines as one of his favourite carriers, saying one of the group’s smallest members is consistently willing to help United test new technology. Speaking on the “Cheeky Pint” podcast, Mr Kirby noted that United and Lufthansa are the alliance’s two largest members before singling out the Croatian carrier. “One of my favourite airlines is Croatia [Airlines]. They’re small, around twenty aircraft, it’s a great country and the people are awesome. I like the CEO. It doesn’t drive a ton of economic value, but when we try to do new stuff, like if we want to do new technology stuff, they’re one of the smallest and they raise their hand every time. And so, I appreciate that”, Mr Kirby noted.
Croatia Airlines has repeatedly emphasised the value of its Star Alliance membership. Its outgoing CEO, Jasmin Bajić, recently noted, “All the work is done within the framework of Star Alliance. We joined twenty years ago and are the smallest airline member. But we have to reach and maintain certain standards to be part of the alliance, and I am proud that Croatia Airlines has done that for two decades. Compliance with these standards and the associated technology is really important to us and gives us a platform for success. It allows us to be competitive. And, of course, there are innovations at an alliance level which we can access and there is added value for our passengers in terms of connectivity and rewards”.
Mr Bajić also added, “This alliance enables us to provide substantial capacity to Star Alliance hubs, offering access to a wider array of destinations than our standalone operations could do. While overseas markets play a significant role in Croatia Airlines’ overall traffic, we prioritise efficient connections through our Star Alliance and codeshare partners”.
United began operating its own flights to Croatia in 2021, when it launched seasonal services between Newark and Dubrovnik. It expanded its Croatian network this summer with the addition of seasonal flights from Newark to Split. The two airlines have also had a codeshare agreement since 2013, with United placing its UA code on selected Croatia Airlines services, including Zagreb - Dubrovnik and flights linking Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik with major European hubs. United will further expand in the region next year with the introduction of flights to Ljubljana.

Ringing endorsement
ReplyDelete"It doesn’t drive a ton of economic value"
hahaha
ReplyDeleteMaybe the Croatian government should offer Croatia Airlines to United.
ReplyDeleteWow what that great thing would be. Imagine OU being best carrier in south Europe. Better than Iberia or Egean! That would be fantastic.
Delete4x 787 and it will do wonders.
Twice weekly JFK, LAX, MIA and SFO
I like you entertain yourself and make jokes. Kradeze and croatian aviation kokošari made it possible and you have every right to do it. Initially I wanted to tell that both your listed destinations and frequencies are wrong and not suitable for potential OU US services but I gave up the idea as I don't want to spoil your fun and good time. Making jokes on OU, the same what UA CEO is doing, you have every right to do it and they deserve it totally.
DeleteYou're right, 2x daily would be far more suitable.
DeleteYou mean two daily from ZAG as it was 40 years ago I guess...
DeleteOh PIR the world has changed since then
DeleteCorrect. Air traffic tripled. Except with genius minds in OU and Croatia where it's triple worse than it was 40 years ago. And please save your dramatic ohs for places where they belong. This is not the one.
DeleteIf you can't fly daily to JFK and fill the plane, you will never fly to ORD, SFO, MIA or LAX twice a week!
DeleteWhat about EWR? 🙂
DeleteThat's nice
ReplyDelete1. April?
ReplyDeleteAnd he likes Jasmin!
ReplyDeleteBravo Hrvatska
ReplyDeleteBravo za predmet sprdnje? Ok.
DeleteToday's high quality post on Ex-Yu:
ReplyDeleteUnited Airlines CEO likes Croatia Airlines and they raise their hand every time, but they don't drive a lot of economic value.
I think you have thousands of other articles here if you don't like this one.
DeleteSmall airlines rarely get mentioned in these interviews at all. The fact that he remembered Croatia and gave a specific reason says something.
DeleteYeah he's taking the piss
DeleteHe is having fun making jokes 😁
DeleteWould be interesting to know which technologies he means.
ReplyDeleteand what have passengers gained from it?
DeleteWhat passengers gained from it?1. Possibility to fly to the US with one or two stops while they could do it nonstop 40-50 years ago
Delete2. Possibility to pay unbelievably high prices for lousy service
3. Possibility to be treated as stoka sitnog zuba, exactly as they deserve
Croatia Airlines should get Kirby to do their advertising. More enthusiasm in this one answer than in most of their own marketing.
ReplyDeleteTheir marketing is non existent. Like many other things
DeleteNice recognition for the people working there. Whatever we think about management and financial results, the staff deserve some credit.
ReplyDeleteWould love to know where Zagreb stands in United’s thinking.
ReplyDeleteJust ask LJU
DeleteHahaha, great answer!!!
DeleteWhat a peculiar article.
ReplyDeleteVery
DeleteThanks to Jasmin. Zabo keep fighting now
ReplyDeleteLove to see it! PIR takes another L :D
ReplyDeletePIR takes another confirmation he is right. This cements PIR's clames of OU being servant and shameful feeder, working in interest of others. No more and no less. Also PIR does not have sick obsession on comnenting on you, as you have mentioning him here every single day
DeleteThis genuenly reads like he's taking a piss at Bajić raising his hand for everything while losing money
ReplyDeleteWell, some bots here believe it's Bravo Hrvatska!
DeleteI don’t care much for big mouth Scott Kirby but it was either a nice gesture or he wants something from them. With such a small fleet I can hardly see how the small airline can help with much of anything of scale. Interesting relationship.

ReplyDeleteOne of the rare Star Alliance members that does not have their own Business Class lounge in their own hub - Zagreb!
ReplyDeleteOU don't want to treat you on the ground, wait till you get on board and get handed a cardboard box for your business class meal
DeleteIt means Kirby flew OU Economy. And he liked sooo much excellent service with half paper cup of the best croatian water which he got onboard. That's why he is so much thrilled
DeleteMaybe Kirby got a hint he would be fired from UA and in this way looking for opportunity to come now to OU, once Jasmin retires 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of how Etihad / JU partnership started. Etihad flights to Belgrade, so e nice words by the then Etihad CEO and then, takeover!
ReplyDeleteYes, the CEO saying that Croatia Airlines does not bring a ton of economic value shows great confidence.
DeleteBack than, you could argue Jat was in way worse shape than OU!
DeleteSatire, this?
ReplyDelete1000 percent
DeleteCEO of one of the largest airlines in the world randomly taking the piss at some small irrelevant player across the ocean? Some people truly live perpetually in ex-yu aviation bubble.
DeleteHopefully the new CEO keeps these relationships but also works out how to make more money from them.
ReplyDeleteRelationships are between partners. Slavery is between Masters and subordinates. Slavery can't bring money. As simple as that.
DeleteI like the emphasis on the "and they raise their hand every time"!
ReplyDeleteRhetorical questions, but would United CEO list Croatia Airlines as one of his favourite airlines if Croatia Airlines was larger airline flying daily to JFK and also serving ORD and MIA? Would he support them joining TATL JV and why not?
ReplyDeleteDespite only rethorical, I will answer: Of course not. That's what I've been talking about for years, even decades now
DeleteOU is a sleeping giant. If anyone dares to wake them, it's over. Whole world is working against Croatia.
Delete18.04
DeleteThe best way to handle posts as the one above is to ignore them. And that's exactly what I will do.
well today is November 7th, not April Fools
ReplyDeleteNo wonder 😂 They’ve always been eager to volunteer just to please their bosses, even if it means being used as guinea pigs. !
ReplyDeleteEither Scott Kirby is trolling Croatia Airlines or he isnt taking his medications.
ReplyDeleteI hope it is the first one..
