Zagreb still waiting on its new terminal
The operators of Zagreb Airport, Aéroports de Paris, have announced that the construction of Zagreb’s much anticipated new terminal will begin in mid 2013, at the earliest. According to the concession contract, signed with the Croatian government, the new operators are obliged to begin construction by April 11, 2013. However, Aéroports de Paris insists that the original time frame outlined in the contract was “too optimistic”. While the Croatian government can sanction or even terminate their contract with Aéroports for not adhering to the concession agreement, local media report that such a move is highly unlikely as it could jeopardise the ratification of the country’s European Union accession agreement.Jerome Marmet from Aéroports de Paris says that it will take some six months for the finances of the new terminal to be finalised. Inside sources claim that land ownership issues, environmental case studies and the actual design of the terminal building are yet to be sorted. Furthermore, they claim that construction is unlikely to begin before autumn 2013.
The construction of the new terminal is estimated to take two years. In February the Croatian Deputy Prime Minister, Radimir Čačić said, “Construction work on the new terminal will start by the end of the year”. He added that the new terminal will help boost tourism and will also provide a chance for Croatia to become a regional hub in the Balkans. The French offer to take over Zagreb and build the new terminal was the only one received after a controversial year long tender in 2011. Plans to build a new terminal at Zagreb Airport have been floating around for more than a decade.
Were there any improvements after the takeover for either passengers or employees at ZAG?
ReplyDeletewhile ZAG and BEG are arguing which city has a better airport, SKP has already the most modern and efficient airport in the Ex-yu. Shame on these relatively big countries for not having a proper airport.

But it's not a baroque airport. I thought it had to be with gold and marble statues, to be like the city. Ahaha
DeleteBEG, my home airport, is definetely not a beauty, far from it. But it is quite efficient - clearing check in, passport and security takes just minutes, except in rush hour, which is to be expected. There are virtually no tiresome bus rides to the plane and remote stands.
DeleteCould the airport look better? Sure it could, and sure SKP has that new glitz and prestige, it's just a question whether taxpayers should invest their money in the airport which is still under its capacity. Perhaps in couple of years, and perhaps now is the time to start making plans, but building a new airport today would be crazy if you ask me.
I don't believe airlines and/or passangers would use BEG or any other airport because it looks nice. Perhaps they would chose it as a transit point, but for that to happen, you would first need to have and airline with a hub there.
Congratulations, you've said everything. Most of passengers (including myself) don't search the internet for photos of the airport i have to transit through, i just consider the time and the price, that's all. Belgrade is fine as it is.

ADP is a state owned company. Paris airports one of the worst in Europe. I guess that management/engineers etc. of ADP are so slow and don't like stress....to hurry up and rush with plans. Like any state employee. Anyway France is in collective sleep until September first.

ReplyDeleteThere is nothing on their page about Ankara. I I saw they announced flight to Warsaw as well. Maybe it will be Doha-Belgrade-Warsaw flight... Ankara would be better since there is alreadu direct link between Belgrade and Warsaw
Unfortunately, they are starting without traffic rights between ESB and BEG, at least as it stands now.

DeleteQR doesn't fly every day with an A321 to BUD and ZAG. In the past days an A320 was sent instead of the A321. QR popularity in BUD and ZAG is not just cause those two airports are that "great" but because QR simply doesn't face any direct competition in those airports as it doesn in BEG, to a far lesser extent at least (in the case of BUD).

Checked on some prices of QR from BEG for the next winter. They're quite high. I don't know whether that's the way they think to win any customers amidst the fierce competition that exists in Belgrade + without right on ESB-BEG. That route promises to be a real failure. Only the frequency has been right cause they shouldn't expect more passengers than 3 weekly planes, that's for sure.

DeleteBy the way, prices are somewhat lower than those ex-ZAG and quite competitive. If you had expected to fly to Tokyo for 300 euro, sure, it might be a dissapoinment - but you can find sub-600 fares to Far East easily. Only drawback is 3 weeklies, however, that will change with good loads, so now it's up to passangers.
I still believe DOH-BEG-PRG with BEG-PRG being revenue flight was a great idea, too bad they didn't go for it.
Congrats ZAG/BEG on the QR flights, it's a great 5 star airline .. meanwhile SKP can only get FlyDubai. :( All the reviews/reports are horrid, even for a LCC carrier. :(
