Belgrade eyes 5.5 million passengers in 2015

Belgrade Airport anticipates another record year as Vinci expresses interest

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport projects it will handle between 5 to 5.5 million passengers next year following a record breaking 2014. In order to keep up with the expected growth, the airport is set to resume its expansion project as capacity becomes stretched. “Next year we expect to see passenger growth of around 10%, which means we are reaching the upper limits of our capacity, so we have to invest in infrastructure”, the airport’s acting CEO, Saša Vlaisavljević, says. He adds that over the next two years the airport will become a major construction site, with the expansion of its aprons and terminal two building. According to the CEO, the airport is ready handle long haul flights from 2015. Earlier this year, the Serbian Prime Minister, Aleksandar Vučić, said, “I am certain that by the end of 2016 - 2017 Belgrade Airport will become the biggest hub in the region. Nikola Tesla Airport is experiencing problems as a result of increased traffic, in particular with baggage sorting and aging technology”.

Belgrade Airport has recently received permits to commence work on the third phase of its reconstruction and development project which involves the expansion of the remaining A concourse gates, thus completing the upgrade of all of the airport’s departure and gate lounges. The project will culminate with the fourth and final phase which will see the construction of a completely new floor stretching over 4.900 square metres, to be built above the current terminal two building. The airport is also set to invest in aircraft de-icing equipment, busses and tech support. Further investments will be made in improving security procedures ahead of planned flights to the United States and Canada. The Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency (SMATSA) recently announced plans for the construction of a new control tower in Belgrade, which will take three years to build.

Meanwhile, construction and concessions company Vinci expressed interest last week in investing or acquiring concession rights in Belgrade Airport. Accompanying the French Prime Minister Manuel Valls on a visit to Serbia, Vinci Airports Chairman, Nicolas Notebaert, said, "Vinci Airports have an ambition to cooperate on the development of Belgrade Airport and other Serbian airports. We are interested in long-term partnerships", he said. The Serbian government recently adopted plans for the public company running Belgrade Airport to be renamed to “Airports of Serbia” with more than twenty of the country’s smaller airports to be added to its managing portfolio. In September, Vinci lost out in a bid to buy a 75.5% stake in Slovenia's Ljubljana Airport to German airport operator Fraport.

What exactly do they mean by the expansion of terminal 2? Will they be extending the terminal building from C6 to C10? I still think that the construction of the second floor is stupid.

Because the whole terminal is outdated and not compatible with their new business model. Belgrade needs a new, modern terminal, not an old patchy one.

    3. Makes sense when you consider the separation of arriving and departing passengers. The security risk is there, especially since passengers aren't screened upon arrival at BEG if they're going to transfer to another flight. It also should free up some space for those on longer layovers and need something to do, like more shops, food places, lounges, etc. Short term fix until management decides on another terminal.

    4. Anonymous18:06

Johnsmith - you are talking total shit ... Arr passengers may not be separated from dep passengers at BEG airport, but they sure as hell are screened before they get their connecting flight .. security checks are undertaken in the holding area at the dep gate ... same as they are at other bigger world class airports like Changi in Singapore or KLIA in Malaysia ...

      Delete
    5. I should have clariffied what I meant but that's no reason for you to be rude. I am referring to screening passengers as soon as they're off their previous flight, as what's done in Australian airports. I also would be careful about calling KUL 'world class' considering the controversy surrounding the MH370 events.

Good news for the airport! Expansion of aprons makes most sense in the "ATR parking" zone. Was there any other apron area specified for expansion?

    1. So when they said apron they meant area for remote stands? If that's true then it seems likely that they will extend the current terminal all the way to C10.

as for Airports of Serbia, it's stupid to include all airports. if they are going on with that plan then BEG, INI, LYKV and eventually UZC are to be included. LYVR is under SMATSA's management, and small airports should be managed by local authorities or private sector

I am sure January will pass the 300.000 passenger mark but I am not too sure about February. I think that before summer they must reconstruct the A6-A10 gate area otherwise it will be a living mess especially since there are going to be around 600.000 passengers in August!

But the Americans demand that we separate the arriving and departing passengers. That's tricky.

      Delete
    3. AirCEO15:45

Not tricky, separate arrival level actually works great where implemented. What should be done is to renovate remaining A gates and at the same time build second level above those areas, elevators and escalators between levels etc.

The way project phases are planned right now, they will renovate A7-A10 gates, put HVAC on top, and then in the next phase few months down the road rip that apart and start adding second level. They already did C concourse this way and it makes absolutely no sense.

I hope they will begin construction of a new terminal in 2015, the airport is too small now to handle such an airline as Air Serbia is.

What's nice is that Air Serbia's partners keep on adding capacity to Belgrade. First we had Alitalia which not only added frequencies but also capacity, very often we see their A320 in BEG. Then we have Aegean which has upgraded the route to an A319 and then we all know how busy Aeroflot is in summer time.

Hope this trend continues. With 5.5 million passengers next year, Belgrade will come really close to Bucharest. I wonder if we might see a midnight departure to both OTP and SOF before north American flights are introduced!

Povecanje tarmac-a. Njegovo uredjene ce pripdati ovom veku, Know How. Bez improvizacije... Izgradnja Druge piste, rulne staze.
Bez toga sadrzaja Belgrade airport is poor as vinager.

    2. Anonymous13:21

Neka renoviraju T1 i dodaju po nesto korisno onda aerodrom prima bez problema 8 miliona putnika. A to ako se desi bice za 5-6 godina najkasnije a do tada cemo najverovatnije imati T3 koji ce primati barem isto toliko plus dve piste itd parking:)!

This is bad. So BEG is lagging behind BUD, OTP, ATH, and even when they build the new terminal (probably in 2020, because of are stupid government) BUD, OTP and ATH will probably have more than 10 000 000 passengers, and ATH could reach more than 20 000 000. And with new airport in Istanbul, which is going to be built in 2020, BEG won't have any chances to become regional hub. Well, thank you, politicians.

      2. Bucharest has more chances but Tarom is far from being a stable airline. They are facing many challenges and until they get rid of the A318s they will keep on bleeding money.

Athens will thrive, no doubt about that, that's why I did not include it in my analysis.
However, the ME3 have killed airlines like Singapore or Thai there, they simply can not compete any longer. Athens will keep on growing primarily because it has the means for it, both in terms of its infrastructure and and a local, strong carrier.
