Wizz Air announces Niš flights

Wizz Air to launch Basel - Niš service

Budget airline Wizz Air has today announced it is launching operations from Basel to Niš Constantine the Great Airport, making it its second destination in Serbia and sixth in the former Yugoslavia. The announcement was made today at 11.00 CET during a press conference at the seat of the Serbian government in Belgrade. It was fronted by Wizz Air’s Executive Vice President, John Stephenson, the Mayor of Niš, Zoran Perišić, and Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Communication Zorana Mihajlović. The new flights to Niš will mark a major turning point for Constantine the Great Airport, which has struggled to attract customers since it reopened for commercial use ten years ago. Flights from Basel will operate twice per week, each Monday and Friday, starting July 3, 2015. Tickets are already on sale and can be purchased through the airline’s website. Further flight details can be found here.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Stephenson said, "We are happy to be moving forward in Serbia. We began with flights to Belgrade in June 2010 and since then we have handled over 1.6 million passengers. The increase in fees at Belgrade Airport has blocked our further expansion and affordable offers to Serbian passengers and foreign tourists”. He added, "With this service to Niš, we want to stimulate holiday and business travel and offer another region in Serbia affordable tickets at low prices. Our flights to Niš will act as an addition to our offer from Belgrade and will contribute to the development of the Serbian aviation industry and create new jobs”. The flights from Basel will serve on a trial basis and will test the market for possible future Wizz Air flights to Niš. Local authorities have signed a three year commercial contract with the low cost airline.

Wizz Air entered talks with Niš in August when it said, “We are talking to Niš and other airports in the country as we are interested in growing in Serbia”. The airline has emphasised that its presence in the country’s south-east will not impact on its operations in Belgrade, It said, “This does not mean we are growing without Belgrade - we are not interested in moving”. Last week, Constantine the Great Airport lowered its passenger tax to just one euro in order to meet requirements set out by the low cost carrier. However, local authorities have stressed that Wizz Air will not receive subsidies for its flights. Basel and Malmo have been rumoured as the first potential destinations which will be served from Niš.

The Serbian government has designated Niš Airport as a low cost hub with some 40.000 passengers to be handled next year and a further 100.000 in 2016. Furthermore, the state will invest 1.5 million euros in the installation of necessary equipment at the airport. Over the past decade, Niš has been unsuccessfully served by the likes of Jat Airways, Montenegro Airlines, Darwin Airline and budget carrier WindJet, which operated flights from Forli to Niš. Wizz Air has been extremely successful in conquering EX-YU markets where low cost airlines have had a limited presence. Wizz Air is the busiest carrier operating out of Macedonia, the second busiest in Serbia and the fourth busiest in Slovenia so far this year. Furthermore, Wizz recently announced it would open its nineteenth base in Tuzla, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, next summer.

Toronto Zagreb connection finally, Now only if we can get NYC connected with Zagreb as well, that'd be something.

Let us remember for a moment what some of us were writing regarding failed charters as an argument for the claim that therefore no low cost flights would succeed:

FOR THE LAST TIME. Do not mix apples and pears (frogs and grandmothers)!!!

Since many of you guys still use those failed charters as an argument, I found a comment I made a couple of days ago on this blog.

Failed charters are not an argument!!!

I agree that it would be really hard to revive Nis, but I just have few remarks.

Charters and lets just say Zurich and Dortmund services target different people. Charters rely on the purchasing power of local population, and those are people would travel once a year.

Dortmund, Zurich and other lines would on the other hand, rely on diaspora who has quite bigger purchasing power and tends to travel more often than local population in southern Serbia. Plus on those flights you can add a small portion of local population who would visit their cousins and aunts and uncles. Charters do not have those, plus during the summer many people use buses and cars (Thessaloniki is quite fast to reach from Nis by car).

Of course, you need a lot of planning to do.

Like when there were Zurich flights, they were quite expensive (at least 300€).

Yeah but let's not forget something, this time around the airport did reduce its taxes and charges which made flights more realistic. Just look at how cheaper it became to operate into INI from last week.

I really believe Nis has great potential of becoming main low cost airport in that part of the Balkans. It is located only 2 hours away from Belgrade, Sofia, Pristina and Skopje which makes is perfect airport for low cost companies. Soon high way to Skopje and Sofia will be finished which will make airport even more approachable. High way to Prisina will probably be build with EU money. Also there are plans for reconstruction of railways and Russia and Czech Repulic already provided funds for it

I see Ryan and Wizz opening a base over there in some years. Macedonia will get national airline and once subsidies disappear Wizz will start moving from Skopje to Nis.

Till yesterday you did not have even one flight per year. Today announcement of 2 flights per week but it is good sign for INI to become MAIN LOW COST AIRPORT in that part of Balkans.

My good. Why should Wizz air or someone else use INI instead of SOF, SKP, PRN, BEG? Even with higher taxes those cities have huge potentials, munch more potential passengers. And those airports are not CDG or LHR that you must find alternative. They are more than cheap with lot of benefits for LCC to fly on them.

But, of course typical megalomania and prepotence, we will get 2 weekly flights but it is just beginning of becoming leading airport in region.

I was just speaking about the POTENTIAL Nis has, its competative adventages and possibe developments for coming YEARS.
Your question why should Wizz or any other company fly from Nis when there are bigger airports around shows me you are not so much informed about news in ex yu airline industy. Serbian government receantly anounced plan to move low cost cariers from Belgrade to Nis. Macedonian goverment anounced plan to create new national airline with the base in Skopje. You dont have to be so smart to realize that there is no space for strong Wizz and new national carier in Skopje. With the better infrastructure conecting Sofia and Nis I`m sure more Bulgarians would concider Nis as their departing airport as Bulgarian market is quite price sensitive. Pristina doesnt have many low cost trafic and probably will not have as it is limited only to local Albanian population.

Also I really see Ryan coming to Nis in next year or two. They dont cover this part of Balkans at all and I believe there is lot of space for their development over here.

I think you got answer to you prepotente question.

    4. Anonymous16:11

I forgot to mention one more thing to say about Nis airport. Railway passes just 100m from the terminal buildingt. That means you can be in the train for Belgrade just 30 mins after your plane touches ground. If rail way reconstruction is finieshed in next 3 years, you could be in Belgrade city centre after just one hour and half.

    5. Anonymous16:43

For sure Wizair will not leave Macedonia and espetialy not because of some macedonian national carrier, and even more funny story is that Bulgarian passengers would use Nis instead of Sofia where Wizza has 3 planes based and 17 routes.

If god forbit Wizz will stop fly to BEG, than for sure most passengers will trawell from Budapest or Temisoara, for sure not from Nis.

In the following months, as the airline expands, these are bus and minibus lines that should be established to Niš, with stopover at Niš airport:

Belgrade, Novi Sad, Skopje, Priština. Later on, Sofia and Kosovska Mitrovica could be added. ..
It is important that Serbs feel that is enterprenurship time.

I have never been to Niš airport, but I believe that since the taxes are so low, it would need caffes, wi fi (but not free of charge) , some restaurants and shops.

I believe Nis Airport is tiny :) which is fine for a LCC. It is also located very close to the Belgrade-Nis train line...hmmmmm future station there?
The area is very poor so things are long way off. However good luck to the lovey city of Nis! Fantastic people in that area.

No, ja nisam govorio o skijanju, nego o jeftinom piću i sisama.

Nitko nije rekao 5 dnevnih linija. Što zamajavaš svet? Gde to piše?

To sam i reko

    3. Anonymous13:13

      Delete
    4. Anonymous13:57

Alo- on ima 17 godina, a vi?

To mi uopste nije jasno.

amazing. how is Wizz 2 weekly flights to Nis more important then Air Baltic to Dubrovnik or the new Portotoz flights ( both only handled in the "news flash" section of this blog).
    Amazing!

    1. Air Baltic's 2 weekly flights are seasonal, Air Valee's two weekly flights are limited charters, so yes this gets a bit more coverage.

Cekaj znaci ASL smanjuje frekvencije ka LCA a sve ostalo povecava?

Congrats INI! All the naysayers on the blogs the past few months are prover wrong. INI will overtake Tuzla in 18 months. Other airlines will follow WIZZ and facilitate the process to make INI a de-facto center for low-cost air;lines in Serbia.
The overlap with Sofia, Skopje and Pristina will also add to the numbers.
    Go Naissus!
