Adria to launch new Maribor flights in 2016

Adria commits to developing Maribor into a low cost hub in 2016

The CEO of Adria Airways, Mark Anžur, has announced plans for the carrier to add additional new routes from Maribor Edvard Rusjan Airport in 2016, after it initially launches seasonal flights from the city to London Southend Airport this June. Mr. Anžur says the airline aims to develop Slovenia’s second largest city as its low cost hub, which is in line with Adria’s strategic shift towards a low cost business model. Last week, Slovenian media speculated that up to three new destinations could be launched from Maribor this summer, however, the airline committed to London only. The CEO rejected claims that Adria’s focus on Maribor comes in response to increased fees at its hub in Ljubljana, following the airport’s takeover by Germany’s Fraport. Mr. Anžur notes that Ljubljana Airport offers a different set of services that entail higher costs.

The Slovenian national carrier will launch three weekly flights from Maribor to London Southend Airport from June 1 until September, with return fares starting at 69 euros. The planned service will mark the resumption of Adria's scheduled flights from Maribor for the first time in fifteen years. It is also the first time the airline will operate flights to Southend Airport, which is located in Essex, some sixty kilometres north-east from Central London. The carrier estimates it will carry some 10.000 passengers on the new flights and will cater not only to travellers from Maribor but also from Zagreb, Graz and others parts of Austria as well. London Southend’s Chief Commercial Officer, Roger Clements, says “We are absolutely delighted Adria Airways chose London Southend Airport above all the other London airports and we look forward to the start of a great partnership with the airline. Maribor has a wealth of things to offer travellers from Essex, London and beyond looking for everything from a weekend break to longer holidays at any time of the year. I am sure these flights will prove popular”. He adds “And there’s good news for passengers arriving here at London Southend too, as for June and July every single one of them will be offered a complimentary standard train ticket to London”. Ticket sales for the new route begin next Monday. 

Maribor Airport

Maribor Airport is bullish on its future prospects. The airport, which handled only 17.568 passengers last year and is used for charter flights only, says that three to four new “low cost routes” will be launched next year. Mairbor Mayor, Andrej Fištravec, notes that Adria’s new service to London marks the beginning of the airport’s development into a hub. “Regional competitors may have a head start but they are running out of room for development, while Maribor has plenty of space”, the Mayor says. Edvard Rusjan Airport opened a new terminal in 2012 with the capacity to handle 600.000 passengers per year. Maribor – London Southend marks Adria’s sixth new route this summer with the airline to launch flights from Ljubljana to Stockholm and Berlin, Tirana to Brussels and Paris, and services from Lodz to Amsterdam as well.

      As per one of JAT`s timetables,they flew to Belgrade, Frankfurt, Split and Dubrovnik. Inex Adria also had flights to Sarajevo, Skopje and Belgrade.

    As long as the promo price will be sold and train transfer not offered loading will go down down.
    Maribor completly uncompetitive. Striken poverty (compared to other parts of SLovenia). People that can fly before from Graz, Zagreb, LjubljaNA can do it also now.
    Just not to add trash: Maribor - Bergamo would work well. Slovenians obsessed wity Ryanir cheap fligts from Bergamo hub, plus Milan (Lombardia locals) flying to Maribor in summer, plus EXPO Milano 2015.
    Milano-Bergamo would be 100 better and would work great.

      Yes, i was very surprised to see the A320 with sharklets at the gate A5 instead of the usual 738. However, right after push back, we stopped for like 10 minutes, after what we were towed to the B4 position cause the left-side engine couldn't be started. That's when i decided to take the camera out, will show you some more pictures.

      Most of the pax were Turks since Pegasus is still relatively unknown in Serbia. I also met a guy from Argentina.

      I've chosen Pegasus cause i don't love to be stuck to a return date and Air Serbia fares equalled in one direction the price for a round-trip (just commented on that this morning). I'm going somewhere else from here but i was told by the guy at the check in counter that the loads are generally ok.

      ^ They have been saying that for almost 2 years ( I wont even bother putting up tons of blic and kurir articles up), until I see it I wont believe it. Sometimes you have to be realistic and say that in best case scenario those flights will start in summer 2016 and of course never forget that worst case scenario of flights never starting is also an option. I am amazed my the amount of people who still believe what our politicians, "businessman", "estrada" say.

      As i said before, training the cabin crew for the A330 will take a few days. Cockpit crew maybe a little more longer but that process is as well quick. No crew will be going on training in the next minimum 6 months, and IF they will eventually go for training, i dont think anything will start before the beginning of next year.

      Training will be the least of issues, all crew operating to the US will need visas to operate to the US.

      Talk for the US flights have been going on for almost a decade now, with even a B767 leased from Polet as well as crew being sent to Sweden to undergo training for the B767 back in 2006. A schedule was released and tickets were being sold. Before that tickets to YYZ and JNB were being sold i believe in 2003 while JU still had YU-AMB in the fleet which was supposed to operate the flights. Flights never materialised and customers were rerouted via other airlines.

      Moral of the story - I will believe it when I see it. Or even better, I will believe it when the first flight lands on US soil.

      JU may have changed dramatically this past 18 months and for the better, things are normalising and continue to do so, but there is a long way to go to support long haul.

      EY have a fleet and crew shortage and think that the A330 JU will eventually get will end up operating on behalf of EY to gain extra revenue.

    Utterly shocking outcome of a Germanwings tragedy. There is no doubt this event together with MH370 will send shockwaves throughout entire airline industry. Incident investigations have always been a major driver in implementing changes to improve safety and 4U/MH370 will likely usher a new set of changes unseen since Sept 11. CVR and FDR will probably become floatable devices, pinger batteries will last longer, frequent and more detailed real time data transmission will be implemented. Cockpit video recording might become common and new rules regarding cockpit access are almost certain. Proponents of automation will push the case for more autonomy and AI in flight.

    If there is a sliver of positive news after this tragedy, it is that industry will find ways to learn from it and become safer over time.

      Hope you understand by now the reason for Germanwings crash has nothing to do with automation.

      While I fully agree with growing number of scientists and entrepreneurs who warn of AI dangers, automation is going to expand in the cockpit as long as we can keep a lid on a sinister side of it.

    * Dinner onboard JU800 BEG-AUH - three meal options were available. Food was good.

    Overall: Flight was smooth and good. Air crew were hard working, smilely, attentative and fantastic. They were polite and frequent with hydration rounds. Empty flights both ways (JU801 AUH-BEG: 2/46, JU800 BEG-AUH 1/49) meant I had 3 seats to myself :) I slept most of the way to BEG, the crew were quick to offer me refreshments when I woke up. Breakfast from AUH is horrible, scrambled eggs and mushroom omlete. TK offers on DXB-IST burek with spinach and I am sure JU could do the same in economy as one of the options. What JU lacks is power points in each seat, especially since soon it will be offering wifi onboard. Btw on both sectors, crew were handing out forms for the Etihad guest program. I will be back on JU again next month.

    As for pax, mostly coming from Australia. I noticed quite a few Emirati pax going to Serbia on vacation.

      Thanks for the report! Those numbers are definitely concerning even thought its still the low season. If by any chance you traveled before on ASL to AUH can you share the loads.

      Ive travelled many times between BEG and AUH with JU. Only once ive travelled and the load was full and that was in september last year enroute BEG-AUH. This is the minimum, there has been 70-85 pax. Business always seems to be light. The ÉY'flight in the afternoon fills but atm it too is seeing lighter loads. In my folder you will see more pics, as well as of BEG and even the old catering of JU on flight DXB-BEY enroute to BEG (JU051 i believe was the flight number back in the day). I will be back on the same flight next month and will give another update.
