Passenger plunge at B&H Airlines

B&H records poor Q1 results as Sarajevo continues impressive run

Financial problems, network cuts and bad publicity have taken their toll on B&H Airlines with the carrier recording a significant decline in passenger numbers during the first quarter. B&H, which now operates flights only to Zurich via Banja Luka and charter services from Mostar to Italy with a single ATR 72 aircraft, handled 3.604 travellers during the first three months, down 41.8% compared to the same period last year. Of those, 3.152 passengers were carried on scheduled services, while the other 452 on charter flights. The number of operated flights declined by 13.7%, the Federal Office for Statistics of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina reports. The lacklustre performance comes as no surprise, with the airline suspending flights to Belgrade and Copenhagen during the first three months. In addition, the carrier was grounded for over a week due to financial issues and blocked bank accounts.

B&H Airlines’ woes are continuing into the second quarter. The carrier’s accounts have again been blocked by the asset company HETA. B&H owes some eight million euros to HETA for the ten-year financial lease of two ATR 72 aircraft. Following marathon talks in February with B&H’s owner - the Federation government of Bosnia and Herzegovina - HETA agreed to reprogram the carrier’s debts and unblock its accounts. However, neither the former nor the newly formed Federation government have made any of the promised payments to HETA. The airline has cancelled today’s service to Zurich. The ten-year financial lease of the aircraft, arranged with the asset company and the Hypo Alpe Adria Bank, expires this month. It is uncertain whether the lease will be extended under the current circumstances. B&H Airlines recorded a net loss of 6.5 million euros in 2014 and handled 35.606 passengers.

Despite B&H Airlines’ problems, Sarajevo Airport has continued to perform well, with strong growth recorded during April. It welcomed 63.064 passengers last month, marking its busiest April on record. The numbers represent an 11.4% increase compared to the same month last year. The strong growth came despite only a 1% increase in the number of operated flights. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s busiest airport processed 132.804 kilograms of commercial cargo, up 3%. During the first four months, Sarajevo Airport handled 196.945 travellers, up 13.2% on last year. In a statement, the airport said, “We expect to see further growth in the coming period”. Earlier this week, Swiss International Air Lines launched services from Zurich to Sarajevo, providing additional competition to B&H Airlines on the route. Furthermore, Flydubai will double its operations to Sarajevo to four weekly flights during the peak summer season, from July 24 to early September. The additional flights have already been added to the system and are bookable through the airline’s website. Services between Dubai and Sarajevo were launched last December.

^ Systemic, Anonymous, of the entire govt/bureaucratic structure in BiH. 4 (yes, four) bloated layers of ineffective government - national, entity, canton/regional and opcina. A similar-sized nation New Zealand gets it right with just two - national and regional.

I'd hate to think what all those unemployed government workers would do on the other hand!

This poor airline hasn't had a hope in recent years. Just imagine the success if a fraction of that wasted money went into providing a proper national airline serving both entities!?

LO is not a newcomer AFAIK. It just replaced the Eurolot brand with LOT. KLM is not a big player.
Remember that Star alliance is highly centralized system where the large ones(Lufthansa, Turkish, Singapore, United, Air Canada and ANA) subordinate all other members. For example, I am sure that there are several time more Polish passengers traveling to US and Canada than direct flights from Warsaw currently can handle. But they're mainly taken through Frankfurt, Stockholm and other Alliance hubs. Similar things happen with long haul tourists to Croatia, especially those from East Asia. There is clearly enough of them to have one to three direct flights daily April through October but they're massively funneled via Istanbul, Frankfurt, Vienna and Zurich.

Purger what is your view on this results? One thing is for sure thought, both ZAG and BEG performed so so in April. Of course people should be aware that even if both ZAG and BEG continue with yearly growth of 5-7% that will be a excellent results. Eventually after few years with this growth airport would have a respectable number of pax. After all 5-7% can be considered natural growth, while 30-40% growth is definitely inflated. Also do not forget that MOST big airports around the world have a much smaller growth per year. ( this is generally speaking, I do not need some people posting stats of how some bigger airports have 30% growth)

Razmjenjujemo mišljenja i učimo.

Mene prvog, a ja imam konjske živce.

BEG growth should stabilize around 5-10% while Air Serbia's growth should continue in the ~15-20% on average for the coming two years. That is of course in the current network configuration and without any expansion. Lets not forget that in only two years from now Air Serbia should start receiving 10 A320 and i hardly see where they're gonna send them to. It is a matter of survival for Air Serbia to open a number of eastern and long-haul destinations in the coming future since the current network is simply unviable from the point of view of profitability. The European market is saturated and except for the business class offer ASL has little to reap from most of it. Air Serbia needs to place itself in the Eastern markets what Aegean has been successfully doing since its merger with Olympic, what shouldn't be too difficult with the right schedules and given Aegean's crappy product, yet Air Serbia seems to be totally ignoring those markets that should be key to its survival, instead of relying on a network that we could call 'glorified Jat'. Needless to say that if TK stopped its expansion half-way today they would already be bankrupt. You need to reach a critical mass and scale before getting profitable what requires investments and Air Serbia doesn't seem to be ready or to posses the know-how (or will from a certain stratum of its employees) in order to do it.

Using airports as a means of revenue is a completely wrong way of thinking. The economic benefits of greater airline activity greatly overshadow the losses in revenue from airports.

BH Airlines is destroyed (not yet finally) by the BH ''open'' policy and very bad company leadership in last 5 years. This is specially connected to BH connections with giant Turkish Airlines who did all to push BH Air deeper in shit hole and to overtake the passengers . True. Turkish has more passengers from SJJ then B&H. They are operating three daily flights and sending A321 very often. When Serbia managed to get JU back to Ataturk I remember B&H said they needed the same thing to happen, for the bilateral with Turkey to be respected.

It is really a difficult situation for B&H. The problem is you can't sell the airline anymore. It's market share is dismal, it has two planes that will probably get repossessed by the end of the month and you have almost 100 employees. I don't blame them. They are the victims of a bad government. The only thing B&H could actually sell is its AOC and IATA code.

OT: ASL A319 YU-APJ is flying again, and so is YU-APE after 4 days. Did anyone at BEG see them, do they have new sat antenna installed, or at least YU-APJ?

@ Dejan thanks for the pics.

Why would we "ucutati"? Who are you to say that, everybody is allowed to say whatever they want as long as it is not racist, nationalistic and so on!! If those results are indeed true, that is great! This also means that Star Alliance and the rest of the companies in BEG are recording bad results, right?

Wow, first time to see one of those on an A319. Wonder how'll that affect the aerodynamis and the economics of the aircraft ;) Thanks for the photos!

That dome looks quite huge. This is the only other pic of a narrow-body with a Wi-Fi i was able to find, notice it isn't located at the exactly same place:

Like that song says "its all about the money honey". Im pretty sure that employees would not mind the company being profitable (like in any other company). The ambition is big, but is there ALLthe money neccessary to back it up? I personally hope so.

What I can say is that I do not agree with any comparing BH Airlines and Sarajevo airport , as they are completely different interests . BHA is in the interest to work as many flights and to transport as many passengers while Sarajevo airport wants to attract as many companies and their earnings. I agree with the comment that the state (Federation ) to blame for the events in the BHA . If the management is incompetent , they had to remove but also protect the company from unfair competition and plunder as he did to Turkish Airlines . Shame on you ! It is only important that they dominate the market and take absolutely everything . Once again , shame on them ! 7 days in Antalya free , our politicians and decision-makers and to asses whether the Turks .
Special stories are airport taxes that German Wings does not pay for years , so how is it possible ??? Who are they that they are given such a privilege ?

Has anyone asked how damaged the budget because of non-payment of taxes ? ! ? And who authorized this program ? Do they know that because of the same stuff director Belgrade airport got 5 years in prison . ( help Wizz Air )

One is when a subsidy is to open new destinations , but the line for Cologne and Stuttgart existed before the arrival of German Wings in Sarajevo . Someone is here took a thick steam , perhaps even one orthopedist from Herzegovina .

    Postovani,
Srdacan pozdrav, Dervisevic (Anonymous)

OT: Jat Memories just published on fb that JU will be getting new ATR72. Supposedly it is Czech Airlines ATR72-500 currently registered F-GRPK, and it should become YU-ALV...

Is this just a rumor, does someone have any info?

It actually belongs to Air Corsica. The aircraft is 'only' 9 years old, that'll be the youngest Atr in the fleet i guess.

  21. How long does it take to complete a D check on the ATR72 ? Also does anyone have information on how long ASL will lease the new ATR? I believe that the other 2 ATR 72-500 are leased till 2017.
