Sarajevo Airport's new management has adopted a Reform Agenda, which foresees the construction of a new passenger terminal in the near future. Depending on the cost, the airport will either build a brand new facility or expand the existing terminal building. It comes four years after the former management cancelled plans to expand, despite securing a 25 million euro loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to do so. According to then General Manager, Ivica Veličan, the expansion was unjustified as the terminal is yet to reach its maximum operating capacity of one million passengers per year. The project involved building an additional 7.000 square metres of space, a new apron and the overhaul of existing jetways. The final price tag of the project was estimated at 32 million euros.
Under the new Reform Agenda, the airport first plans to build a VIP lounge, car park, office building for staff and support services. a rapid-exit taxiway and expand the apron. In 2017, work will begin on upgrading its runway, as well as its taxiways. "All development projects are planned in line with international standards with the aim to meet the expectations of passengers, airlines and other customers using our services", Sarajevo Airport says. So far this year, the airport has overhauled part of its terminal in a bid to boost capacity at check-in, customs and the arrivals gate. Some two years ago, the airport intended to reconstruct its old terminal (A) building, currently used for administrative purposes, and turn it into a low cost terminal instead. Work was scheduled to begin in 2015 and was to be completed this year. However, the project never materialised.
The Acing General Manager of Sarajevo Airport, Armin Kajmaković, says he is certain 2016 will be remembered as a "turning point" for the airport. "With ambitious projects and innovations, we look forward to keeping up with modern trends. Already in November, travellers can expect the opening of Qatar Airways' service from Doha, and we have also resumed negotiations with the Hungarian airline Wizz Air", Mr Kajmaković notes. Next year, Croatia Airlines is expected to base an aircraft in Sarajevo, with direct services to several key European destinations, while flights to both Iran and Egypt are expected to be launched as well.
If your capacity is 1 million and you are handling around 800,000 then you should definitely start thinking about expanding your terminal.

ReplyDeleteI hate it how people in this region are short sighted. You deal with things ahead of time so you are ready, you don't start dealing with it when it's already too late.
Totally agree, how stupid is that, lets wait to have problems and then we will deal with it. Typical Balkan mentality, that's why we have all sorts of problems because of people on high positions, who have no clue how to run household nor business like International Airport. Sarajevo airport will reach 1 million mark next year, current terminal is designed to handle 800.000 per year. When we have 4 aircraft landing at the span of 15 minutes airport is so overcrowded, but I guess that wasn't problem for Mr. Velican who was getting 3000 euros monthly pay, for what?? Again Balkan, would love to see the day when things change in this part of the world. Hopefully new younger generations will bring change to this stale Tito style system.

DeleteSomewhat wrong, Split airport is battling in courts over land issues, has been for owe 6 years now. Only when land issues has been solved can new terminal be constructed on it. Staklenik who leased the land is disputing the land ownership, and due to massive corruption in local council things haven't moved much since 2010 when new 25000sqm terminal plans where put forward.
Good news for Sarajevo.
ReplyDeleteThis year they managed to bring Qatar Airways and Air Arabia, as well as chase away CSA because they didn't want to open the airport a few hours earlier. That said, I really think they need to work on bringing a LCC to SJJ that could even base an aircraft there. Without a national carrier its the perfect market.

The airport is within the city! If you would live in neighbourhoods of Sarajevo like Ilidza, Pejton, Otes and Osjek, you would now what I am taking about.
Why does CSA have problem with departing Sarajevo at 6 am?
Because it does not fit into their departure wave from Orague as they are basing the route on transfer traffic.

Yes, it happened to many airlines, of course not only YUARA. My point is why there were much more major delays in JFK? What is going on/wrong there? Longhaul from EWR was still often on time, hence uneffected. Not in JFK airport!

ReplyDeleteOni pregovaraju sa Wizz Air vec 5 godina haha, od 2011 godine, svake godine kazu "vode se pregovori". Sarajevo se hvali svom Aerodromu ali stvari je ta da taj aerodrom nije jos uvijek ozbiljan svijetski aerodrom i slab je po broju putnika. Zatvara se u 22 sati odma kad sleti avion iz Zagreba i s tim sto zatvara u 22 dok uglavnom svi Ex Yu glavni gradovi rade preko noci (?) cak i jedna Pristina na Kosovu i Skopje odtjeraju od sebe kompanije. Naprimjer cehe.
ReplyDeleteNe ide to tako Sarajevo, a ne da budem takav ali 772 000 putnika nije nista dobro cak i u regiji. Nema tu ni milion dok Skopje i Pristina ganjaju u blizu buducnost 2 miliona. Za Sarajevo bi 1 milion bio karneval, da jedva obore glavnog grada jedne drzavice male od 600 000 stanovnika, nije bas dobro.
Tu su i destinacije, ne treba Sarajevu Sharjah, Kairo, Teheran i tako dalje. Sarajevu kao Evropskom gradu pod hitno treba Amsterdam, Frankfurt i London. Znam da trebaju vize za London, ali tako je i za makedonce, a opet imaju i OHD i Skopje Londona. Trebaju napraviti paket za engleze i privuci njih kao turiste i siriti reklamu za Sarajevo u engleskoj. Mislim da u BiH ima isto dosta puno katolicki/pravoslavni crkvi kao i u Makedoniji? Ako makedonci imaju jedno jezero, mogla bi BiH imati nesto? London 2-3 sedmicno sa Sarajeva bi moglo ici, treba samo da neko mrdne guzicom.
Oni nisu bili spremni otvoriti aerodrom 1 sat (!!) ranije zbog federalne kompanije koja je koristila Sarajevo kao svoju bazu, da je to Beograd Beograd ne bi nikada kao drzavni aerodrom (Sarajevo federalni) rekao Air Serbia "ne" kad bi oni bili u istoj situaciji. Takoder i ZAG za OU.
DeleteMozda Sarajevo ne zasluzuje domacu kompaniju jer njoj zestoko ogranici radno vrijeme od 6 do 22 sati. Ljudi nece sat vremena da zrtvuju jer je vaznije odspavati sat vremena.
Aerodrom Sarajevo je fakticki u samom gradu, zbog konfiguracije terena nemoguce je bilo gdje u blizini Sarajeva imati aerodrom osim mjesta na kome je sada. Sto se tice radnog vremena aerodroma, dozvola za rad aerodroma duze od 23:00 sata, i otvaranja istog u 06:00 je tu iz razloga, i vrijeme otvorenosti aerodroma se nece promjeniti. Pokraj aerodroma se nalaze ogromna stambena naselja i nemoguce je imati aerodrom otvoren u kasnim ili ranim satima zbog buke. Mislim da tih par sati i nisu bas neki problem, a sto se tice samog aerodroma i broja putnika, ipak je to veliko dostignuce s obzirom da je aerodrom Sarajevo u potpunosti bio unisten u ratu. Za vrijeme SFRJ aerodrom kao i cijela BiH su bili na margini, da bi Beograd i Zagreb bili gdje su danas. Sarajevo itekako ima potencijal za LCC sto ce se uskoro i pokazati. S otvaranjem baze Croatia Airlines-a i baziranjem jednog A319 aerodrom ce dozivjeti ogroman rast prometa (oko 30%). Croatia ce povezati Sarajevo sa direktnim letovima za: Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brisel, Kopenhagen i Stokholm. Wizz air dolazi pocetkom novembra sa letovima za Budimpestu a nakon toga i 3 nove destinacije iz Sarajeva! 2017 definitivno SJJ ce preci cifru od 1 million putnika. Aerodrom ce biti zatvoren na 10 dana u septembru naredne godine da bi se izvrsila renovacija piste i aprona koji ce biti i prosiren za povrsinu na kojoj ce biti moguce parkirati jos dva aviona tipa A320 i slicni. Dok aerodrom bude zatvoren svi letovi ce biti preusmjereni za Tuzlu. Tuzla u 2017 godini ocekuje preko 400.000 putnika i aerodrom ce biti samoodrziv od slijedece godine!

DeleteSto se tice aerodroma, to sto ne moze nocu da se leti je apsolutna glupost. Cetiri pet kompanija bi odmah dodale nocne letove za SJJ. A sto se tice buke, ko sisa taj narod. Sta su ocekivali kada su kupili stan u blizini aerodroma? Sami su krivi.
Kakva crna buka, pa nije to Heathrow sa 650 sletanja dnevno, od čega su pola heavy... Više se tramvaj čuje od aviona, da budemo iskreni.
