NEWS FLASH

Canada's Air Transat has delivered on an earlier promise to upgrade its seasonal flights between Toronto and Zagreb next year. The carrier will bring forward the service resumption to May 31, instead of mid-June, and will operate flights twice per week (Tuesdays and Sundays from Toronto), up from this year's one weekly flight. Operations will continue to be maintained with an Airbus A330-200 aircraft. Services will run until October 18. In June, Air Transat's Commercial Vice President, Gilles Ringwald, said the airline's operations to Croatia in 2017 would largely depend on this year's performance. "This is a seasonal service running between June and October because our estimates show there is low demand during the winter. If we achieve satisfactory results this summer, we could extend the season next year", Mr Ringwald said, adding that the leisure airline plans to carry some 5.000 passengers on its seventeen return flights to Zagreb in 2016. "We are always looking for new opportunities and could introduce additional frequencies on the route next year. It will all depend on this summer's results", he noted.

They plan to do that, they just needed to test the market, see how things are going, implementing what you suggested might happen next or the following year. However their network is rather small, they're a holiday company not really a scheduled airliner.

Note to Air Serbia: Air Transat doubled frequency and extended season while Air Serbia still doesn't have business case to start Toronto.

"Bad person" a "get a life" because someone noticed AT can make YYZ work and JU can't? According to your calculations, when should JU start YYZ?

As soon as they can make it a year-round and slightly more frequent than 2pw.

ASL is not obliged to clone each and every service in exYU just because another carrier serves it. And you guys should really find a way to get rid of this crazy habit to force each and every piece of aviation news into the ASL perspective. It is simply insane.

Many people would like to see Air Serbia succeed and grow to more markets like Toronto, so using news about AT to encourage JU is more inspirational than insane. AT does not need to make ZAG more frequent than 2pw. With 345 seats on A332, AT 2pw capacity would be in the similar range as JU 3pw. Adding 2nd A332 to JU would give it flexibility to have options. For example, go daily to JFK and 3pw to YYZ; or stay 5pw to JFK, 3pw to YYZ and 2pw to ORD etc. AT does not need to make ZAG work year-round, they have Caribbean in the winter. Similarly, JU does not need to keep same frequencies in the winter. Keep one A332 for reduced winter frequencies to JFK and YYZ, send 2nd A332 to other members of EY family during low season, solution superior to keeping JFK 5pw year-round. AT with higher costs and no regional connections in the Balkans proved that YYZ-ZAG can work, and JU with lower cost and extensive regional connections can certainly make BEG-YYZ work. By not going after destinations like YYZ, Air Serbia not only leaves money on the table, they invite competition like AT and RV to come in and take it from them.

No, it does not work like that. You cannot use the highly seasonal data of a budget carrier doing two daily rotations to ZAG to "inspire" a boutique carrier that needs sustainable year-round loads to BEG. Everything is different: the carrier, the business model, the market, the season. That eliminates any sense from the logic that says: "if Transat can do it 2pw seasonally to ZAG then for sure ASL can do it 5pw year-round to BEG". No it can't. If it could the route would've been there by now.

Take BEG-LCA JU vs W6, everything is different: carrier, business model, season (last winter only W6), even the market to some extent. Yet they both operate, so difference is not the obstacle. It's not just AT that made ZAG work. As bad as SkyGreece was, they had solid loads on YYZ-ZAG last summer. Skyservice before them made ZAG work too, but had wrong equipment for the job.

We'll also see how sustainable year-round loads (and yields) ASL gets from 5pw JFK in the winter. We both know winter loads suck, so stick with what works. No one said ASL should fly to YYZ 5pw year-round. But even I can make a case for ASL going 3pw to YYZ in the summer season. Second A330 is needed, and on two extra days that plane can fly BEG-JFK to make it (combined) daily in the summer. During winter, send that second A330 to EY family where needed on a lease. I know it's not easy, but would that work?

I like the way you say everything is different, it is still pax wanting to get from Serbia to Cyprus after all.

Question is how soon before a legacy carrier from North America comes to Zagreb, 150 000 Canadians, 320 000 US visitors are expected to visit Croatia this year.

Next year that number could be 175-200 000 Canadians, 400 000 US visitors, by 2020 550 000 US Visitors and up to 300 000 Canadians will visit Croatia, 100-120 000 of these Zagreb. Seriously direct link between Zagreb and Toronto, New York, Boston, Los Angeles are a must, if not in 2018, definitely by 2020.

That's nowhere near enough if at the same time Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Denver, Seattle, Cleveland, Miami, Honolulu, Minneapolis, Vancouver, Montreal, Washington, Ottawa, Calgary, San Francisco, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Kansas City, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Anchorage, Phoenix, San Diego, Orlando and Nashville do not open.
