NEWS FLASH

The Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency (SMATSA) has begun tender procedures for the preparation of technical documentation for the construction of a four-level 75 metre new control tower at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. The project also includes the construction of a two-level flight control centre, which will be linked to the tower. The structure will be located close to the existing tower, south of the current facility. The deadline for the submission of bids has been set for May 8. SMATSA expects for construction to take three years to complete. Commenting on the planned project in 2014, the head of the Air Traffic Services Agency, Radojica Rovčanin, said, "The existing control tower in Belgrade was opened in 1962. The rapid development in traffic in recent decades has called for the improvement of the city’s air traffic control system. When the current Belgrade control tower opened, only some 371 aircraft used to fly over the country. Today, we handle the same number of aircraft in just one hour”. He added, “Therefore, we need to make technological improvements to Belgrade Airport’s control tower and, in doing so, we will do our best to make it a building that will dazzle with its height, luxury, style and beauty". Last year, SMATSA completed work on the reconstruction and expansion of Tivat Airport's control tower.

Why the h*ll are they doing this in the middle of a tender to sell the concession for the airport? Let the eventual winner determine how and when to build a new tower as it has be planned and coordinated with a wide range of other elements.

Because the concessionaire does not have the authority over when and where to build the new tower. Same way no new tower was built in Zagreb and now they have to use cameras to oversee the apron at the new terminal because they have no view of it.
