Ohrid Airport anticipates a strong summer season ahead with the first seasonal charter flight arriving in the city over the weekend. Some 180 passengers arrived on a Corendon Airlines service from Amsterdam. A total of 183 flights will be operated from Amsterdam by both Corendon and TUIFly, bringing over 28.000 Dutch tourists for a vacation at Ohrid Lake. At the same time, between May and October 2017, Thomas Cook Airlines is expected to carry some 2.000 passengers from Brussels, while Air Serbia will cater for around 2.300 travellers from Belgrade. Furthermore, 2.600 Israeli tourists will arrive on Arkia flights from Tel Aviv. "Besides regular year-round routes between Ohrid and Basel, Zurich and London, as well as the traditional charter services from the Netherlands, this summer we also see the resumption of seasonal flights from Belgrade, Brussels and Tel Aviv, as well as new charter flights from Poland which start on June 22", TAV Macedonia General Manager, Alper Ersoy, said. He added, "Once per week some 200 Polish tourists will arrive at Ohrid Lake, thanks to the agreement we have signed with one of the biggest Polish tour operators. With the good cooperation we have with the Ministry of Transport, the Municipality of Ohrid and all state aviation and tourism bodies, we are sure that we will continue developing Ohrid Airport and contribute to the improvement of local tourism".
Great news for Ohrid. I hope they maintain a sustainable tourism agenda, rather than going down the traditional egg and chips route of Spain and Portugal. It really is a special place there.
