NEWS FLASH

Adria Airways' takeover of the Swiss-based Darwin Airline (operating under the Etihad Regional brand) has been described as "positive news". The Chairman of the Board of Lugano Airport, Emilio Bianchi, said, "Clearly we are losing one partner (Etihad), but it's good that there is a company that will replace them. Adria Airways is a very serious company and has a very good reputation". He added, "We need to understand their strategy. We will have the opportunity to meet the new heads of the airline in due course, but this seems to us as positive news. It proves that there is still some interest in regional airlines, which are very important for an airport like ours". Adria Airways plans to rebrand Darwin from Etihad Regional into Adria Airways Switzerland. It has revealed no further plans for its new subsidiary.

By purchasing a Swiss carrier Adria will gain traffic rights to fly non-stop from ZRH and GVA to markets without flag carriers like Kosovo and Macedonia. ZRH is a huge ethnic market for the region. On top of it Switzerland, being outside of ECAA, is an intresting market for airlines as they can still charge good yields absent competition. Clever move unless Switzerland joins ECAA or flag carriers are established. None of it foreseen

To fly NON-EFTA routes out of Switzerland you need HB registered aircraft and big balls to compete with Swiss, Easy, Germania, Helvetic and Edelweis. Before all you need sufficient type which Atrs and Saabs are not.

Its funny to read a statement from the person hidding from a fact that this airport exist just for a fact being placed in extremely reach reagion based on political interest (probably only a few possible cases in europe). LUG never gave a damn about Etihad and now aplowding to Adria is typical ticinesse response.

It is a totally different story when you cooperate and not compete with Swiss. JP is a Star Alliance member with a very good cooperation history with Swiss.

Actually you dont need HB aircraft to fly into Switzerland. Adria can codeshare with Darwin and operate an Airbus with EU registration out of ZRH ti third countries for example.

You will never get traffic rights or consession from FOCA or CS approval if you are Swiss AOC not having HB reg and flying to NEFTA country. Countries which make sense to fly out of CH are non EU that's why you need Swiss AOC. There were much bigger attempts on these markets before without a success. Bellair, Niki, Air Berlin, nevertheless Easy has on of it's AOC's in CH with a reasion.

ADR have good cooperation history with SWR who prooved their alliance two years ago when attacked their code-shared tripple daily flights to LJU with double daily from ZRH. Call it alliance? If there is any value of Stars, they would not sell JP for peanuts but give it for free to LH.

These markets are already well served though.

Prices are too high. Hence, MHL is growing fast. The ZRHPRN demand is very price elastic. Belleair codeshare with Darwin has proven that back in 2013. At one point they flow 4 services daily beside Swiss and Helvetic

Great Adria Airways Switzerland is already fully functional. JP had a shortage of aircrafts in a last few days, so no problem after acquiring Darwin (Etihad Regional).

Tomorrow JP284 to VIE and JP700 to SJJ will be operated by Darwin/Adria Airways Switzerland (Saab2000 HB-IZP).

My only really great flights with Alitalia in last year were with Etihad Regional form Trieste to Milan and back. Saab2000 is a great plane. Call me a geek, it doesn't matter. It is still a great plane for short flights, and with Etihad Regional interior this two flights were like an old time comfortable traveling with a style. I hope Adria will stick with them and with the same cabin interior. Best of luck Adria Airways (Switzerland)!
