Zagreb Airport sets September record

NEWS FLASH

Zagreb Airport saw its busiest September on record by handling 345.770 passengers during the month, representing an increase of 4.5%. The number of aircraft operations grew 6.1% to 4.176.  In September, Korean Air launched flights between Seoul and the Croatian capital. During the first three quarters, Zagreb Airport welcomed 2.569.296 travellers through its doors, up 8.6% on the same period last year. So far in 2018, it added an extra 203.310 passengers compared to 2017. The airport anticipates welcoming some 3.4 million passengers in 2018, which would result in an almost 10% increase on last year.

Seems like September was a mediocre month for most ex-YU airports.

True. In September Korean delivered Zagreb growth. Without it there would barely have been an increase.

Air Canada also helped, but yes, numbers are really really bad, no idea why there's so little growth, September should be very busy for Zagreb, but now it seems the growth has almost stalled.

    3. You're forgetting Monarch that flew till early October last year with A320 and A321.

How come BA didn't increase ZAG with OU and ZB more or less gone?

Excellent question. I would say that BA is much less regarded as an airline of choice for leisure travellers. Furthermore, BA flies only from Heathrow. Monarch was serving more leisure oriented Gatwick and it served the whole North/Centre of England through Manchester. MAN is big time missing now at ZAG.

Maybe those who flew on ZB switched to flying from LJU on low-cost?

BA has become very awkward with their business model. They still brand themselves as a legacy airline and their fares, while cheaper than most legacies, are higher than most LCC's, but they will gate check your hand luggage and have exclusively BoB service with not so much as a glass of water being free on their European and domestic flights. That, along with their recent data breach issues, probably contributes to a lower interest in their services. ZAG-STN would work for leisure travellers, ZAG-MAN or ZAG-BHX could also work.

Nope, Monarch was a daily service, not sure how many weekly flights Wizzair has out of Ljubljana for London, but Monarch Gatwick - Zagreb service had over 6500 pax per month, Monarch frequently deployed A321 on the route, at least twice weekly, it was very successful route, so much so, Monarch had plans to expand to Edinburgh and Birmingham, it flew out of Manchester and Gatwick. Loss of monarch, for Zagreb was massive blow, Zagreb lost around 8-9k pax per month as a result, the loss is reflected in September figures.

Good loads but probably bad yields. If the market was that big someone would step in.

Not sure why September is not a good month for all ex-Yu airports.
Belgrat growth was barely 1,8% in September, Sarajevo -2,6% and now Zagrab 4,5%

      So far this year:

      SPU: 2.799.756
      ZAG: 2.569.296
      DBV: 2.245.371

As you can see the difference between ZAG and SPU isn't that large.
