NEWS FLASH

The Macedonian government's tender for the provision of financial support to an airline for the introduction of new routes in 2019 closed today. Two previous attempts at awarding the financial stimulus were annulled. The public opening of the bids will be held today at midday. The newly offered incentives will be provided to the winning airline between 2019 and 2022. Those applying must have carried at least ten million passengers in 2017 and recorded a net profit of 25 million euros. The selected airline must establish and/or maintain a base with at least one aircraft in Skopje or Ohrid by March 26, 2019 at the latest for the duration of the financial support program. Furthermore, the carrier in question must launch at least two new routes from Skopje by March 26 and four new routes from Ohrid, the first two by late March 2019 and the rest within a year of being granted state support. The financial support includes a one-time payment of 40.000 euros for each new route launched, as well as nine euros per passengers for each new destination from Skopje for the first year, eight euros during the second year and seven during the third. On the other hand, the carrier will receive thirteen euros per passenger during the first year of operations on a new route out of Ohrid, twelve during the second and eleven euros per traveller in the third year.

How much longer before the government gives up on Ohrid? The airport is obviously struggling to make ends meet.

OHD has massive potential, and i think it is right to focus for further development there.
4 new destinations from OHD in the summer season is quite realistic in my opinion.
Maybe throughout the year 4 new ones are not sustainable from there - LTN is an example that OHD is struggling to attract pax. in the winter, but the local authorities need to do some homework for tat matter. For example, they could market Ohrid in the UK, something they have not done so far.
The same for the other destinations wizz flies, like VIE and Basel.

Ohrit needs to be advertised as "Jerusalem of the Balkans" or the "Pearl of Macedonia" and most importantly the OHD Lake.
What Ohrid can do is to apply the Lake Balaton model in Hungary.
They have a small airport serving German tourists and Lufthansa charter flights. The airport is known as Hévíz–Balaton (SOB).
Therefore, OHD needs agressive campaigning e.g. CNN commercial. London bus commercial, etc.

Balaton has decades of tradition in the hearts of Germans. That is why they can have charters and Lufthansa flying there.

Coz both countries have lakes and have the same style.
Ohrid has architecture and Balaton has castles and spa.
They can simply do an exchange and both mayors working together.

if OHD should do an exchange it is with DBV (like in yugoslav times. for culture tours) and Kotor

Aggressive campaign on TV channels like CNN and all over London buses would cost a fortune.

how was their load factor? I know they are struggling to fill in the capacity in winter in SKP.
My flight for Feb 1st so far has good LF, some 70% of the capacity filled in already.

It was indeed low, my flight was on DEC 17th and there were 50 pax in total- all in economy.
I received an upgrade offer upon check in, but it was not worth it to me.
