NEWS FLASH
Niš Constantine the Great Airport has recorded its second consecutive month of declining passenger numbers. It welcomed 26.209 travellers in November, down 3.1% on the same month last year. The number of aircraft movements decreased 9.4% from 234 to 212. Low cost carrier Ryanair has announced it will discontinue flights between Weeze and Niš at the start of the 2019 summer season, following on from Wizz Air's decision to cancel services from Eindhoven earlier this year, as well as flights from Malmo from January 2019. On the other hand, in mid-November, Wizz introduced three weekly services from Vienna to Niš. Over the elapsed eleven months, Constantine the Great Airport welcomed 323.053 travellers through its doors, representing an increase of 7.2% on last year.
Where are the comparisons now?
ReplyDeleteWell unfortunately Nis as a city is too poor compared to the Macedonian government so it can't directly subsidize flights on foreign carriers.
Delete3 EUR tax is enough incentive
DeleteIs INI wealthier than SKP or the other way round?
DeleteAfter all INI population is 200,000 while SKP is 400,000.
INI grew way too fast, the situation is stabilizing now. NRN is being cut because the base there is being shut. LX will most likely add flights next summer and hopefully VIE does well.
Delete...and since you say Nis city is too poor compared to the Macedonian Government, then perhaps you should stop comparing INI to SKP in the first place.
Deletejajaja the base is being shut. no it is not
DeleteIn aviation terms INI belongs to the ex-Yu triangle: PRN_SKP_INI simply because of the geographical locations. But in general, SKP is being more closely related to INI because both airports are quite similar in LCC product, that's all.
Delete100% of the INI routes are covered by SKP.
Same as EIN_MST_NRN triangle of regional airports.
And just like INI SKP is also losing some routes so it's not all glorious there.
Deletehaha
Delete3 routes went seasonal! That is not really a loss.
DeleteSKP will inevitably win the war with more flexibility on the overlapping routes (higher frequencies), more legacy, 10x more routes, better airport product. It is a zero sum game. Get over it.
DeleteSKP made it what it is today because it milked the Kosovo and Metohija market. With PRN pulling its act together let's see how long this fairytale lasts. SKP is still a relatively quiet airport.
DeleteAnonymous 5 December 2018 at 12:02
DeleteI don't know if i should laugh or cry to your comment ? SKP 400.000 ? When? in 1973 ?
Anon 18:26
DeleteGood news is that people from Kosovo and Metohija continue to prefer flying to EIN, NRN, MMX from SKP than from INI. And don't forget, old habits die hard.
Anon 18:01
DeleteExcuse you, more legacies? They simply cannot really count if the airport relies mainly on 1 sole airline.
Thank God, INI relies on 3 or carries and equally and thoughtfully distributes its traffic.
We see O&D and transfer passengers normally distributed via the organic traffic.
Hope you realize that BTS is next, you will have a healthy mix of 3-4 routes, lol
DeleteAt least it's not:
Delete75% Wizz Air 5% legacy if 15% charter + ad hoc travel if you know what I mean.
INI does not think only pink and purple.
Well SKP shouldn't be as arrogant as no one bothered to apply for the new call for subsidies, Wizz Air is already shedding routes and it's easier for them to upgrade the aircraft than to add more frequencies. It means that growth isn't that big and that there aren't that many new passengers.
DeleteIn my opinion SKP is one of the most overrated ex-YU markets.
at least arrogant and overrated SKP is growing and INI is declining
DeleteSKP in fact started stagnating and not growing. The market is extremely limited now.
DeleteINI decreased for other internal, political issues. We hope this is temporary and growth to 1 million restored.
please dont apply to this kid anymore
Deleteonly second month? we should doublecheck that
ReplyDeleteIt says "second CONSECUTIVE" month. There was growth in September.
DeleteMission accomplished!
ReplyDeleteProof?
DeleteFR announced that it will close its base in Weeze, so INI itself is not the issue here
ReplyDeletenot true
DeleteThey are not closing Weeze, they are closing Bremen, but they have announced many cut backs at Weeze
Deletehttps://www.fvw.com/news/airport-cutbacks-ryanair-closes-bremen-base-and-downsizes-weeze/393/192555/11245
they downgraded INI to one weekly in winter season as well
DeleteLet's suppose the Belgrade 'experts' are right, and that Nis was indeed saturated, inflated or what not - I would like to know what INI's new management is doing to attract new routes and/or make the airport sustainable in the long run.
ReplyDeleteAs long as they are not showing any signs of interest in what should be their job, we have all the right to be convinced that they were actually installed to bar any development of INI for the sake of BEG's concession.
+1000
DeleteBoth FR and W6 cut routes across the board due to high fuel prices or capacity needed elsewhere (low yields in eastern europe), so why can't we also assume that the routes did not yield the expected results?
DeleteFR and W6 were cut by the Belgrade Airlines team.
DeleteAnon @13:36 Your conclusion is a very subjective one. I agree that INI takeover is at least very fishy if nothing else but wait for a little before you get the definitive conclusion. I think that was wrong to change previous management of the airport. But, as I said in my post bellow next year is one that will show real reasons for takeover. You currently sound angry and disappointed, and I understand you. It's normal human reaction to seek for somebody to blame when something is not going as you expected but maybe you are looking at the wrong place.
DeleteSuddenly GoS decides to open KVO in mid-May 2019 in order to prevent the INI 1 million growth:
Deletehttps://www.exyuaviation.com/2018/10/serbia-targets-kraljevo-airport-opening.html
@ Anon 13:23, sure, we can assume that. In fact, it sounds like a very plausible option.
DeleteHowever, the second part of my comment still stands. Namely, what on earth is INI's management doing to improve the situation for the airport? Are they talking to other airlines? Do they have a plan how to renovate the airport bit by bit? Maybe fix the toilets? Are they trying anything to increase cargo operations? Do they have any ideas about other ancillary services they could offer? Or did they wisely conclude that the airport that was given to them to manage has no potential and that it's best not to try anything? We have no idea...
The new management should've inherited the good things from the previous one.
DeleteINI terminal façade was completely refurbished and the airport meets the European standards.
https://www.exyuaviation.com/2017/03/nis-airport-terminal-overhaul-advances.html
INI negotiated with Germania and then started talks with Pobeda. They sustained the e current Ryanair flights.
3rd ZRH was added in summer with A320 on many days.
Toilets should be in good condition following the refurbs.
Cargo - as you know INI is already served by Turkish Airlines Cargo International.
Because of all those successful stories, they chose to give BEG more attention as it most likely complained.
@Anon 14:02
DeleteNow even new airports are not allowed to be open only because of "his majesty" INI?
Sure.
@Anon 16:18
DeleteIt was just made intentionally to take away traffic and ensure that INI will never reach 1 million as "agreed" with the French for the sake of Belgrade Airlines.
People from Nis gladly speak about regional development as long as it concerns INI.
DeleteAll these terminals in Morava or Ponikve were built much before INI boomed with passengers numbers so it was not intentionally done to take away passengers from INI.
They have right, no more or less that you, to operate airport in the country called Serbia.
Next year is the one where we will see why the government took INI from the city. If in next year they don't do anything to develop the airport and attract new airlines and establish new routes then we can say that new management is there to prevent any further development. It is too early for any conclusion right now.
ReplyDeleteAnd if they don`t deliver in 2019 lets give them a few more years they are new guys in business let them enough space to breathe. Jesus one year only :-P
DeleteThank you new management, you're doing a great job at destroying INI which is why you were installed anyway. And thank you spineless and vision-less local politicians I am sure AV will give you some crumbs from the Kopernikus corruption money.
ReplyDeleteThat's how things roll around here. The system works perfectly.
DeleteYes, works perfectly until everyone emigrates to EU and USA. Instead of growing the pie and taking a small piece of it, our greedy but short-termist politicians only know how to fight for a larger piece of the ever-shrinking pie.
DeleteThey don't want Nis airport to stop right now as that would cause protests. Instead they want it to lose routes over time and slowly disappear.
Deletefair enough
DeleteJust wondering...how big is the terminal and how many passengers is it able to handle...
ReplyDeleteNapreDNO…
