Slovenia plans Maribor Airport revival

NEWS FLASH

The Slovenian government is drafting plans to revive Maribor Edvard Rusjan Airport following a failed concession. Infrastructure Minister Jernej Vrtovec said the government plans to set up a logistics centre there. Mr Vrtovec believes the airport has major potential for business. He sees Maribor Airport as one of the country’s five most strategically important projects. "We have to better use the airport's strategic location. This is an extremely good opportunity for the Slovenian economy", he said. Activities are under way to come up with the right concept for a logistics centre, which could also serve as an important inland warehouse for port operator Luka Koper. However, the minister noted the airport should be developed jointly with the logistics centre, meaning the new centre would not exclude other business streams such as passenger and cargo air transport. He expects for draft modifications to the state spatial plan for the airport to be made in September, which would enable its development. The ministry is working hand in hand in conceiving a solution for the airport with DRI, the state-owned company which currently manages it. In early June, it was reported the airport could be used to park grounded planes amid the coronavirus pandemic.

      Hahahah, you are right.

It is really shame that MBX has no scheduled flights. That area of Slovenia is very beautiful and it could be LCC alternative to ZAG, LJU, KLU, GRZ especially as it would help to the development of village and spa torism.

LJU and GRZ are a solid catchment area. 2-3 western routes, 2 ex-yu routes for diaspora in SLO and the eastern part of AUT

I hope they have a very good defibrilator. It's been dead for more than a decade.

No need for this airport with LJU, ZAG, GRZ surrounding it. Luka Koper should have its inland hub at LJU since it is at a intersection of two of the major EU transportation corridors. They should just try to sell it to a lcc or anyone else that could be interested in it.

LJU is owned by FRAPORT and MBX by the state

Anonymous12:28 - So what? What has that got to do with anything?

I was saying that they should sell MBX to an lcc airline. So what if the state owns the airport, they aren't allowed to sell it?

If the state wants to build logistics hub LJU is not an option as it is private. So the only choice is to have it at MBX.

Why should the state sell only international airport under its control?

Why would any LCC want to buy MBX?

Did you see anywhere that any LCC is interested of buying MBX?

Does any of the 3 EU LCC's own an airport?!

Could JU make this work with some subventions? They seem to be doing quite well in LJU.

Well, JU is one of the busiest airlines in Slovenia in terms of frequencies so it would only make sense. Would you prefer someone like LH just because they are not Serbian?

I was also wondering why there is no Covid19 grounded aircrafts in MBX, not sure though how much space they hve to park planes

Just saw their apron is too small to accept more than maybe 6-7 aircraft. Revival for MBX? GRZ airport is 59 km away fm Downtown Maribor. I dont see it.

    2. Graz has constantly failed on all levels over the past years, especially when it comes to LCC traffic or new routes. With no significant LCC traffic in LJU, ZAG or KLU either, I think MBX could quite work for FR or W6
