Bulgaria's Ministry for Transport and Communications has said it will assist airlines in the introduction of flights between Sofia and Skopje as soon as possible after holding talks on the matter with several carriers. The Bulgarian Prime Minister, Kiril Petkov, said good progress was being made for the flights to come to fruition. Low cost carrier Wizz Air maintains bases in both the Bulgarian and Macedonian capitals.
They should rather consider flying between SOF and OHD and the Black sea and SKP instead.

Skopje and Sofia are under 4 hours by car, right?

DeleteNot everyone loves in Skopje, did you forget that? There are people that live in other cities too. Also, not everyone wants to drive. Barely anyone really.

DeleteLjubljana Vienna is approximately the same time to drive, maybe even less. And till recently there were 3 daily flights. Any service can be success with good marketing

DeleteIn the past Bulgaria Air operated route to Skopje. Was the route cancelled due to low demand?
ReplyDeleteThere was once a route with Hemus Air in June 2004 but didn't last too long.
DeleteI do remember Bulgaria Air flying the route in the past. Not sure the reason for the cancellation, but I recall the prices being astronomical (~$300) for such a short flight.

DeleteSof- Skp is a 25 min flight on a jet engine equipment.
ReplyDeleteTogether with the check in and passport control on both airports this journey could take mod or less 3 hours.
Car ride from Sofia to Skopje when the border crossing is smooth can last 4 hours.
My point is that this destination does not make much commercial sense unless it is heavily subsidised.
On the positive side it is good solution because since the C19 started bus services between the 2 countries are completely shut down.
I also agree with the first comment that Sof-Ohd and Skp-Var makes more sense.
I have flown several times with Bulgarian air - they are good value airline.
U are wrong there is 2 times per day bus between countries

DeleteTbh, this route is an initiative by the newly elected PM of Bulgaria in efforts of "improving" relations between BG and MK. Though many say it makes much more sense to have a railway or proper highway connection given the quite short distance. Also, I don't think Bulgaria Air is appropriate because the E190 might be a big huge. Rumours are spreading around Gullivair as they have their ATRs similar to JU and RO.
ReplyDeleteIf GullivAir is still considering North American flights with their 330's, SKP might be very very good source of feed. Add to that some p2p's who prefer air over road, and here we are, Bingo
DeleteGood point, although I don't see this coming anywhere. We are living in times in where some airlines are flying empty to secure their slots leave alone a new airline like Gullivair. Luckily they are using those A330s now flying charters from Bulgaria and Romania to Dominican Rep and Maldives.
