Germany’s national airline, Lufthansa, as one of the largest foreign flag carriers in the former Yugoslavia, has scheduled up to 130 weekly flights to the region during the peak summer period, with the company set to restore a number of routes which have been suspended since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020. The airline will maintain the most flights out of its two hubs in Frankfurt and Munich to Croatia, with services from both cities to Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Rijeka, Zadar and Pula. Notably, the airline will restore operations between Munich and Croatia’s capital on May 2 with one daily flight scheduled throughout the summer.
Lufthansa will also ramp up its services to Serbia. The airline will be increasing operations to three daily flights between Munich and Belgrade, complementing its double daily Frankfurt service. In Ljubljana, the carrier will resume flights from the Bavarian capital on May 2 with daily flights planned, alongside its double daily service from Frankfurt. Lufthansa will continue to serve Sarajevo out of Frankfurt, after making the switch from Munich during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Daily services will be maintained between the two cities. Finally, the airline will resume its seasonal operations to Tivat from both Frankfurt and Munich starting May 15 and June 4 respectively.

Lufthansa’s mainline operations will complement those from the remainder of the airline group which includes Austrian Airlines, Swiss, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings. From its main hubs, Lufthansa’s operations to the former Yugoslavia will be close to reaching pre-pandemic 2019 levels. “We are very certain that air traffic will experience a strong upswing this year. People want to travel. They seek and need personal contact - especially after two years of the pandemic and the associated social restrictions. The pent-up demand for leisure and business travel was already significantly noticeable in 2021 - and this trend is set to intensify in 2022. Last year was a challenging one for the Lufthansa Group and its employees. And 2022 also begins with developments that worry us as citizens of this continent”, Lufthansa said. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine, frequencies are subject to change.

DeleteFor a long time they do not fly to MUC and nobody knows the reason and to FRA they still keep only 5 weekly rotations (although it will be increased to 7 later during this summer).
On the other side JU seems to be dominant player from flights from Belgrade to DUS, STR, BER, HAJ and NUE.
I think they are content with offering many cities in Germany and, at the end of the day, they managed to outperform easyjet on Berlin route.
DeleteWhy should JU launch MUC? I mean they would totally fail there given their disastrous commercial policy and a clear lack of any marketing activity.
DeleteOn top of that, they lack the adequate aircraft to efficiently compete with LH at their fortress hub where they are king. Air Serbia should rather focus on other markets where there is sufficient O&D demand and less competition.
Will be interesting to see what happens in markets like STR and DUS. This winter ATR appeared on STR a few times which isn't good. Since then travel restrictions have been more or less lifted which is good. However, Wizz Air and Eurowings should shortly restore their own flights giving JU a small window of opportunity to position itself in this part of Germany.
DUS-BEG will be also interesting since EW plans four weekly flights. They seem to be optimistic about this route's potential. All in all, Lufthansa Group seems to be activating Eurowings in order to secure its own share of the Germany-Serbia market.
So far Wizz Air and Air Serbia have divided this market between themselves while avoiding direct competition. This is all changing now that EW showed up. If they perform well this summer I expect them to introduce BER-BEG next year especially now when easyJet suspended that route and JU triumphed.
I'm assuming there is a lot of point to point traffic between Belgrade and Munich too. BEG was one of the few routes in the region they didn't suspend during Covid.

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely but since they opened the satellite terminal, transferring at MUC became a bit more complicated. Before you could have easily transferred in 30 minutes but now if you need to go from one terminal to the other I would not recommend having less than 1 hour.
DeleteI remember recently I was looking at some flights and LH offered a connection via FRA with just 45 minutes. Yeah ... no thanks.
And I would warmly recommend people to avoid LH. They have become such a bad airline after the covid cost cutting. I don't know if they are worse on long haul or short haul. I'm genuinely wondering what is the point of the Eurowings brand anymore. Lufthansa is now on that level.
DeletePersonally I think Lufthansa is worse because people have some expectations when it comes to them. Personally, I think this experiment won't last and that LH will have to restore some sort of a service. British Airways tried the same and they recently announce the re-introduction of free drinks and snack on short and medium haul flights. LOT did the same as I believe it was last year that they brought back free drinks and snack on their short-haul flights.

DeleteAgree with these arguments. Service has really gone downhill at LH since late last August when wide ranging cost cutting was introduced. A lot of the crew themselves are embarrassed by the current service standards.

DeleteWinter 2008 was when Jat Airways canceled MUC. Jat at that time had a codeshare agreement with LH.
DeleteJU342/343 was the flight number. Frequencies were up to daily with the ATR, departing at various times depending on the day. Everyday they seemed to have a different departing time, which was common with Jat at the time. One day 7am, another 08:25, sometimes 12:25. Here was one of the schedules I could find.

Market is there as LH has a large hub in MUC (transit pax). LH has alot of flights to the Balkans from MUC, which doesn't help JU. Wizz also operating into FMM eats into the O&D demand. JU to have much of an impact on LH would need to operate with the A319, as the ATR would make them extremely unattractive on the route. JU doesn't have enough on offer to make an A319 to MUC work.
Ah completely forgot JU and LH used to have a codeshare!
