NEWS FLASH
Ljubljana Airport handled 66.843 passengers in November, representing a decrease of 22.1% on the same month in the pre-pandemic 2019. The number of commercial aircraft movements stood at 1.540, down just 0.7% on three years ago. During the January - November period, the airport welcomed 909.634 travellers, which is still down 44.4% on pre-Covid levels.

ReplyDeleteThey'll do about 950k pax, which is tragic but far better than we all thought at the start of the year, especially as there is no Russia flights, which were getting really strong at the start of the year

ReplyDeleteHad to fly out of KLU a few days ago. Flying out of ZAG today. LJU is virtually useless at this point for a regular traveller.
ReplyDeleteCorrect. I travel twice a month and rarely (if at all) use LJU. Very high prices and useless connections. It's funny how "frequent fliers" were complaining about Adria's prices and route network. With LH in charge, it's soooo much worse.

DeleteI ended up not going. I waited for 5 hours, then it started snowing and I didn’t want to drive back in too bad of a weather in case it got cancelled. I would have missed my onward evening flight to LPL anyway so I cut my losses. Plenty of people gave up and left even before I did.

DeleteProbably it really depends of the destinations. I fly between LJU and LIS every month, buying tickets well in advance since I know the dates for the whole year. I'm quite happy with the connections and the prices.
DeleteChecking the historical figures, during the last 22 years, the highest number of passengers achieved was 1,818,229 in 2018, but even with EU membership in 2004 the numbers were always between 1,3-1,6million. To try achieve the 2018 figures, the airport clearly needs an Adria v2 or OU basing an aircraft. It will also be interesting to see what will happen when Croatia joins Schengen in a matter of weeks. However, airports will be borderless on 26 March 2023.

DeleteI believe Schengen will make difference. People travel and fly much more during summer than during winter, and waiting times on Bregana during the peak season were in hours, which made lot of Slovenian passengers choose flying from Trieste, Treviso, Venice, Graz, Klagenfurt, Vienna, instead Zagreb.
DeleteSchengen will make a huge difference. Just like pozdrav said, Slovenians, at least those that I know, tended to avoid ZAG because of the border unpredictability. But now that’s gone.
DeleteYes it will make a diff for zagreb because Ryanair customers thst use venice will now consider also zagreb. But if u are flying from ljubljana today you will also after 1.1. So impact wont be that big.
DeleteI think that in case of LJU airport it's not only pre-Covid period which should be compared but also when JP was still flying. So I suggest to make comparison also to same month on 2017. Then we would see what "improvement" did LJU really had!
ReplyDeleteExactly! November 2019 was still badly affected by JP demise. If i remember well it was only in the second half of the month when the first flights (with low frequencies) to LH group hubs were reestablished.

Okay, MLA is an island and air travel is logic but what about Luxembourg which has many bigger airports as well nearby as this is usually the main argument used.
All those are EU capitals and really small. Slovenia is the second visited ex-Yu country after Croatia. Clearly, something is really not quite right.
And you don't want to know the 2019 figures of MLA and LUX....
Even TLL registered 1,300,378 passengers in 2021, a very small EU capital and with a population of 1,3 in the entire country.
All those countries usually do not have large diasporas and TLL no longer has a flag carrier.
I hope Fraport read those comments.....
Most tourists in Slovenia are from neughbouring countires so come with car. Slovenia is relativly great ski country but it lacks ski charters which is a shame for a a country a Slovenia.Possible counties could be the Netherlans,Uk,Belgium,Poland,Denmark etc. In Bulgaria they get a lot of UK ski tourists. I understand that Bulgaria can offer much cheaper deals than Slovenia but they can try. But it's difficult to compare Talinn and Luxembourg with Ljubijana though. Tallinn is in the northeast of europe and Estonian citizens can only go to the other baltic states or Finland by car. For everything else they need to use the plane. And Slovenians can visit the sea in croatia by car, venice Italy by car and cities like Budapest,Vienna and Munchen are under 5h from Ljubijana(So there is less need to use the plane. Besides Estonia has a lot of region travel with the baltic and scandanavian which Slovenia has not with the balkan countries or other neigbouring countries. And if people visit Estonia they will high likely visit Talinnn while in Slovenia it's spread to the Entire country.
DeleteLuxembourg is a very rich country avarage nett salary is €6000 so their citizens can very easily afford to go to holday and it's 3 it's also next to Germany,France and Belgium which have also very good economies and Luxembourg seems to get a lot of passengers from these countries where at Ljubijana it's the opposite.
Average gross salary in Luxembourg is around 5150 EUR, net 3570 EUR. Still it is great for LUX considering Frankfurt Hahn being close, Charleroi and also Paris is about 2h by train.
