Wizz Air to base fourth jet in Belgrade, launch five new routes

Low cost carrier Wizz Air will expand its operations from Belgrade with the introduction of five new routes and the stationing of a fourth Airbus A321 aircraft in the city. The airline will introduce flights from the Serbian capital to Lisbon, Bergamo, Berlin, Copenhagen and Zakynthos. As a result, the budget carrier will be the sole operator between Serbia and Portugal, while it will compete directly against Air Serbia to Berlin and Copenhagen and indirectly to Bergamo, with the Serbian flag carrier operating to Milan Malpensa. The Portuguese capital is Belgrade’s busiest unserved route in Europe based on indirect traffic volumes.

The new additions to the network will be introduced from late July and early August 2023, with exception to Bergamo which will commence in September. Services to Berlin and Copenhagen will run four times per week, Lisbon and Zakynthos twice per week, while Bergamo will operate five times per week. Wizz Air will also increase frequencies on a number of routes it already maintains from Belgrade. The new additions will bring Wizz Air’s route network from the Serbian capital to 23. Furthermore, with the low cost carrier’s latest network additions, Belgrade Airport is currently set to see the introduction of 25 new routes in 2023.


Commenting on its expansion, Wizz Air's Network Officer, Evelin Jeckel, said, "We are delighted to be expanding our operations in Belgrade and thereby confirming our commitment to the Serbian market, where we are the leading ultra low cost airline in terms of the number of available seats and passengers carried. From July 2023, we will have four aircraft stationed at Belgrade Airport connecting the Serbian capital with numerous destinations. The addition of another jet in Belgrade allows us to further grow our position on the market and offer passengers from Serbia the opportunity to travel to a total of 23 cities in thirteen countries".

    First of all this is a much better bunch of destinations than places like Vaxjo and Billund - I'm not surprised all that those didn't work out. Super surprised about Zakynthos only launching in August... That's 2 months worth of demand that they'd be missing out on, what is the reason, is it fleet?? The other 4 are year-round destinations so it doesn't really matter as much, but Zakynthos!? Super happy about Lisbon!

      For most destinations, if you include luggage. AS is way more competitive from BEG and INI.

      Wizz is cheaper only if you buy the cheapest fare as a wizz club member, and the service can not be compared to AS.

      No they are not. Three out four routes are just to hurt Air Serbia, no other reason. Wizz will operate just in spite. If losses became unbearable they will cancel the route with little advance notice, just like they did many times before. Wizz makes money by having no competition.

      The only one where Wizz will make money is LIS.

      I doubt that LIS would work with them. Modest (2pw) frequency and large capacity (A321). LIS would best work on A319 with 4 weekly frequency scheduled to fit transit passengers in each direction.
      CPH won't work either and most damage they'll do is to themselves and their MMX route which is just across CPH. JU relies partly on O&D and partly transfer pax on the route and with proper response (fares) they can whip off wizz.

      I think A321 is a better fit here (LIS). High volume, low frequencies. A319 would be too expensive to operate on such a long route, higher CASM.

      What are you talking about? LIS is one of the warmest capitals of Europe in winter, people will absolutely use it as a city break/getaway destination in autumn & winter months. These flights will be PACKED.

      Lisbon should be with smaller aircraft, more frequencies, and early morning flight. There would be a lot of transfer pax, since TAP is well connected with north and south america, and they offer the cheapest fares for those destinations. Just 2 flights per week, and bigger aircraft is orientated only towards serbian city break tourists, and that's a big mistake

    This is great News and With new metal as well a321. I flew on one to London last week and they are nice their new ones. Whilst all these new routes are great out of Belgrade I do hope we hear a real fleet strategy for Air Serbia in early 2023 and some investment in new planes. Having had a number of issues in recent months with Air Serbia and their ageing fleet it needs a think. Maybe if they more closely align with Turkish there may be some opportunities to get discounts by buying together.

      W6 probably does not need so much efficiency since average flight time from BEG is shorter compares to the other bases. Luton and Abu Dhabi are operated by A321neo.

    I would definitely be cautious with such a 7 month in advance launch. Wizzair are in a strange situation cancelling many flights. In the UK, they recently have officially topped the complaints charts:

    They seem to be more focused on the Middle East rather than Europe. Also we see here the HUGE amount of cancelled routes:

    It would much better for BEG to get FR, which at least are more reliable at this stage simply because they are more organised as an airline no matter what they say.

    Not really a big increase in routes, AS opened 22 new routes, and W6- 5.. LIS would be great if they started, but I don't trust them anything. Also prices are not really competing, too high lately ,even without luggage..and you never know if you will reach your destination at all, or be late for hours

      It's actually 28 when you add those which were launched during this winter season. So 28 new routes for next summer comparing to the summer 2022. And those 28 routes have 95 flights, plus all frequencies growth... Many new flights in Belgrade!

    Excellent new Wizzair routes in Belgrade. I am particularly happy about Lisbon and Berlin. All that remains is for that new plane to arrive at the base on time. As for the price of airline tickets, they will be adjusted to demand and various promotional activities of Wizzair.Certainly, wizzair is my first choice for flights from Belgrade.

    Belgrade airport social media already reposted/retweeted Wizz announcement with 5 new routes. Air Serbia announced 20+ Euro routes in recent days but none were retweeted/reposted on Belgrade Airport social media. Okay I get it.

    5 more routes are also increased. From August 1st there will be daily flights to Eindhoven, Barcelona, Rome Fiumicino, Memmingen and Dortmund, as well as 5 weekly to Paris Beauvais.

    Air Serbia has increased frequencies to Milan, Berlin and Copenhagen as a response to today's new routes launch by Wizz, but we expect further growth of frequencies on routes to Rome (probably to 14 weekly) and Barcelona (12 or 14 weekly).

    No one will fly from Belgrade to Manchester or Dublin because of visa policy.

    Helsinki will probably be served once again by either Air Serbia or Finnair. There is no strong P2P demand and route will rely on transfers, which means Finnair or AirSerbia, not Ryanair.

    We already have plenty of flights to Spain and we don't need Alicante.

    Porto is missing, and I could say that Wizz could also launch that.

    Bratislava is way too close to Vienna and Paphos is not so popular from Belgrade, furthermore we have many flights to Larnaca.

      Bratislava actually too close to BEG. It costs 40e with door2door limo service that most gasto people use. And it would be a gasto route.

      Then how do you explain both MAN and DUB being on the top of unserved routes from BEG ? According to EX-YU, there were respectively 8345 and 5687 indirect passengers from BEG to these destinations in 2019.
      Your "visa regime" argument is not viable, look at JFK, ORD, LHR and LTN, all of them are directly connected to Belgrade (except Chicago from May 2023) and yet flights are packed and h visa regime or not.
      Alicante could honestly work at least on a seasonal basis.

      When it comes to Alicante, it could work like I said, the same goes for Paphos, Cyprus is well-known for Serbian people and it wouldn't be bad if PFO was added to the network.
      Porto would be an opportunity for both BEG (new link) and for Ryanair to start operations from the Serbian capital. Otherwise, I don't think Wizzair would launch it.
      Finally, Bratislava is definitely a gasto route and will put pressure on the JU-OS duopoly and make prices lower on the Vienna-Belgrade section.

      I agree for Helsinki, Finnair is the best choice for this route thanks to all the connecting flights they have, even AirSERBIA gave up even before the Covid started and hasn't rescheduled it three years after. Now that Turku is gone there is less competition and the Finnish carrier may benefit from the situation.

      If Podgorica managed to have year-round flights to MAN with Ryanair then I don't see why it couldn't happen to Belgrade knowing that 8345 passengers flew between the two cities according to 2019 figures said just above by another user.

      I think W6 could make this work especially in summer when so many Slovenes visit Serbia.

      Можда другде али у Србији су релативно ок. Прошле године имали су минималних отказивања а кашњења су била у рангу других компанија. Вероватно јер овде имају локалне запослене које не користе другде па не преливају из шупљег у празно.
