PHOTOS: Sarajevo Airport’s new terminal nears completion

NEWS FLASH

The construction of Sarajevo Airport’s new terminal building is entering its final phase, with work expected to be completed this year. The new building is spread out over four floors and 10.000 square metres. It will feature twelve check-in desks, five gates and one glass air bridge, which has already been mounted and connected to the building. The airport’s two existing airbridges will be replaced to match the newly installed one. The new facility is linked to the existing terminal to form a single functioning unit with the capacity to handle two million passengers per year. The airport is in the process of setting up a new automated Baggage Handling System. Work on the expansion of the airport’s apron is also ongoing. Once completed, it will boast eleven aircraft parking positions, up from the current seven. As a result, Sarajevo Airport’s handling capacity will be increased by 60%. It will be accompanied by extensive work on the airport’s electrical installations and sewerage. In the coming period, the airport plans to extend its runway by 550 metres. It has already purchased 60.000 square metres of land to do so and has begun clearing the terrain.

I like it but this cannot warrant 4 years of construction. Entire airports have been built during that time and this is, relatively speaking, a small expansion.

Seems bigger than expected. I hope they finally finish it.

Loving the bright colours. It looks quite decent. Well done, SJJ!

Thanks for the report. As someone who lives in Sarajevo and has been a regular "air commuter" from/to SJJ for a number of years now, all I can say is "about time!". Here is hope that a new lounge will also follow (first world problems, I know) plus being able to travel with an electronic boarding pass (...) would be a welcome move. Sadly, not much one can do about the fog and ILS (CATII/III) implementation would basically require a new runway. Last-but-not-least, a zebra crossing on Kurta Schorka would be great but that's something for the city council. :-D

Even more needed is a roundabout 50m further up the road. It is almost impossible to merge into traffic when there is congestion. Also the parking fees at the airport are just plain silly.

I agree. The whole stretch of road from the airport and down to the other "hotspot" (meaning the junction just after the shopping centre, between Stup and Nedžarići) is just a joke.

At least they have machinery against the fog unlike TZL where flights get redirected much more often

I hope they will add some decent restaurant or coffee shop there along with some better toilet facilities in the departure area

And a new lounge is desperately needed as well.

Agreed regarding the new lounge as I also previously stated (see 12:14), however if they plan to maintain the usual poor (or, rather, non-existent) food/drink selection then they may as well keep the current one. Those ham/cheese croissants have been the only food choice as long as I can remember (meaning years and years), a few weeks ago they didn't even have beer (they had added a couple of not-so-appealing apples, though...).

Private companies will probably take over food court: https://sia.ba/Dokumenti/Dokument/60957630-6fd1-4c58-9256-30ae6b87dd6d
