NEWS FLASH

Passengers flying between Zagreb and Helsinki this summer season will be the first in the European Union to test a pilot project aimed at digitalising travel documents. Special equipment to test digital travel documents at border checkpoints at Zagreb and Helsinki airports are being installed. Passengers, who will be voluntarily selected on flights between the two cities, will gain access to a mobile application where the digital travel documents will be stored. Before leaving for their trip, passengers will be required to send their information from the app to the border inspection authorities, so the documents get checked in advance. Once those taking the trip are at the border check, a photo will be taken, which will then be used to connect the digital travel document with the individual. Despite going through this process, it has been stressed that test subjects will still be required to hold a valid passport with them. “Finnair from Finland, the Croatian Ministry for the Interior and the AKD company from Croatia are involved in the project. In addition, the Finnish National Police Administration, the Finnish Immigration Service and Finavia are participating in the project as associated partners”, the Finnish Border Guard said. The project is aimed at speeding up border checks. Finnair will resume its seasonal flights between Helsinki and Zagreb on April 9.

I agree, I always use electronic gates, e-passport, it is quite fast, 1-2 min if you place passport correctly on the reader and bob's your uncle, you're in. Zagreb should install these, chaper and faster imho. Last time I went through Zagreb airport arriving, took 20 min to clear 200 passangers. I'd rather use electronic gates please.

You failed to understand and do not follow closely enough the words of your overlords. The octogenarians have decided that the serfs will have their physical and digital identity merged. If course it is a conspiracy theory. One that didn't come true yet.

As someone who used it in china (comparable system, judging from the description), it's annoying, and takes longer than the actual aiport system

What are you people talking about? Is this time travel to the past article? Are we in 1985? This summer there will be no borders and no checks on flights between Zagreb and Helsinki. It's already implemented on ground border crossings and starting March 26 at the airports as well. I would like @ex-yu or someone else to clarify this article because I totally don't get it

Passengers are not taking photo at the check in. One small percentage on passengers who didn't check online are showing their documents with photo on check in. Also, on some airports photo ID is required on the boarding gate. But article is about border control and digital passports and the flights between Zagreb and Helsinki are starting after croatian airports are in Schengen, with no borders and no travel documents, digital or physical. Once again I am kindly asking @ex-yu for clarification

You still have to have a document checked (ID/passport) - you cannot just board a plane without ID check, even if the flight is within Schengen. This way, the gate agent will not be checking your ID at all, everything will be done via the app and the automated boarding gates (which will now include more checks - biometrics - compared to what the gate agent was doing).

Yes, you need ID photo document in order to travel by plane. But did you read the article? Ex-yu aviation saying "to check digital travel documents at BORDER checkpoints in Zagreb and Helsinki" and with Schengen there are NO border checkpoints when travelling between the two. That's why I am asking ex-yu for clarification for the third time

Legally speaking, borders betweeen Schengen countries still exist. What has been abolished is most of the border *controls*. But purely legally speaking, borders are there.

And border controls can quickly come back at the first turbulence, like we saw with covid
