Zagreb Airport plans to launch a shuttle bus service from downtown Ljubljana to attract a greater number of Slovenian travellers. The airport has confirmed it is working on the project but is yet to finalise when the new service would launch, the exact frequencies and the schedule. “We expect the service will start operating this summer season”, Zagreb Airport said. Both Zagreb Airport and Croatia Airlines have both said they have seen an increased number of Slovenian travellers since the collapse of Adria Airways in September 2019. Ryanair, which has a base in Zagreb, told EX-YU Aviation News, “We see a lot of passengers from Slovenia on our Zagreb flights. Even if you go to Zagreb Airport, either in departures or arrivals, you will see that there are lot of Slovenians. At the airport’s parking one will notice many cars with Slovenian car plates. We know and we are sure that we are covering the Slovenian market well from Zagreb Airport”.

DeleteYes, they sold it long ago. Company name today is Pleso prijevoz. But on each and every of their buses, as you know, it's written "Croatia Airlines". So, Croatia Airlines buses will be carrying passengers from Ljubljana to use mostly Ryanair from Zagreb. Ground transportation is about where their capacities end.

Delete@pozdrav iz Rijeke. For a guy who knows everything and is highly critical of everything that is happening in cro aviation, funny how you didn't know about Pleso prijevoz. For example, company name is and was (during OU ownership) Pleso prijevoz. Secondly, some buses still do have OU sign but it doesn't have to do anything with OU because ownership is divided by Zagreb Airport and Croatia Bus Ltd. All in all, it is a godd job by Pleso Prijevoz because, specially considering that Ljubljana is only 1h30m far.

DeleteThis just shows how SLO passengers are impotant for ZAG and that Croatical capital would be one of the biggest losers if Slovenia got their own airline (what I fully support).

DeleteI don't think there will be any significant increase of Slovenes flying from Zagreb just because there is a bus link. Most Slovenes go to Zagreb by car or use GoOpti or other shuttle carriers. Bus will just be a slightly cheaper alternative. It may bring more tourists to Ljubljana though, since they rely on public transport.
ReplyDeleteI agree, this will attract more foreign turists to Slovenia that Slovenians to fly from Zagreb. Ideal case would be to sale bus seats together with the ticket, to appear in search engines when looking for a flight to LJU. An opportunity for OU.
DeleteI agree, Bus is just another service and option, most people will use other methods, Flix-Bus being one of them. Slovenian Railways plan either next year or in 2025 to offer service Ljubljana Zagreb rail service, which would offer 5-8 daily trains to Zagreb , Stadler Flirt Service which has capacity of around 200 passengers would connect both cities with a direct single service line for the first time, since Croatia uses 25 kV AC system, Slovenia 3 kV DC. Croatian Railways also plan service to Ljubljana in a longer term with bi-mode trains, which are battery operated on unelectrified lines or lines that use different system, and electric supply over 25kvAC on section that are electrified. However this service won’t be offered before 2027, as Croatian Railways just ordered these trains.

Same could be done in VCE with 2 daily buses to LJU and DL AA UA EK CA IB etc flight numbers

I don't understand why Croatia and Slovenia don't cooperate much more. That rail could be funded by EU long time ago, I'm certain.

DeleteFunding was the problem, on Croatian side and Slovenian side. In Croatia railways were never seen important and all the money went in to building 1380km of motorways and counting as another 350km of motorways is yet to be build. Railways simply got no funding, but under new tax system introduced in 2017, road and motorway users will fund with their tax modernization of the railways. I think roughly in tune of €350 million of every year, but increasing with each year. Croatia is introducing new motorway/road vignette, all will be done via wifi and road users will need to pay for a sticker with a little chip which can be updated using an app, you’ll be able to pay for motorway tolls and road usage across the country, with daily, monthly or yearly rate. I have no idea how much any of these will cost but in Slovenia which has same system you can use entire motorway network for €170 per year, I presume in Croatia would be similar, more expensive as Croatia has a lot larger motorway network. About 10% of that will be used for national railways, in 2022 they estimated it’ll be around €370-550 million per year based on total annal revenue of between €3.7 to 5.5 billion with in first 10 years.
EU Funding will/is playing important role as well, Croatia was awarded around €26 in funding for railways with this Croatia will contribute with around €4 billion of its own money for railway modernization. Plan is to build €1 billion link between Krapina and Maribor, it’ll be high speed link connecting Zagreb with Maribor to Graz and Vienna. This link is heavily supported by Austrian, Polish, Czech, Slovak and Croatian governments and has been given EU funding. Line between Zabok and Krapina will be modernized and double tracked and electrified, same goes for line between Zagreb and Zabok, however that line was modernized and electrified, just not double tracked. Work on entire line should be completed by 2035. Train from Vienna to Zagreb will then take only 4 hours instead of current 6-7 hours.
Line between Zagreb and Ljubljana will also see massive investment, on Croatian side, works are largely completed, with line between Zagreb and Savski Marof, already modernized, however there are few things that need to be done including new signalization and modernization of section between Doboba (Slovenia) and Savski Marof. Slovenia will modernize Ljubljana Dobova section and works on Ljubljana – Zidani Most already started, entire section has received 85% EU funding and should be completed by 2027, with section zidani most to dobova completed by 2030. Once completed, train from Ljubljana will be able to reach Zagreb in one hour, allowing speeds on the line of up to 160kmph with average speed of around 120kmph on the line.

DeleteOr people can use JU and have direct flight from INI to BEG and transfer to wherever they want to. Usually, those tickets cost the same or even less than flights from BEG itself.

ReplyDeleteAs I like to use ZAG for my flights I am happy to see this but it is lowkey sad that Zagreb airport is doing more to attract Slovenians than our own airport.
