NEWS FLASH

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport welcomed 128.534 passengers in June, representing an increase of 25.5% on last year but still down 31.9% on the pre-pandemic 2019. During the first half of the year, a total of 535.954 travellers passed through Ljubljana Airport’s doors, up 39.7% on 2022 but down 37.7% on four years ago. The General Manager of airport operator Fraport Slovenija, Babett Stapel, recently said, “Ljubljana Airport is recovering well, although one needs to take into account its specific circumstances. We differ from other airports in the region in that we don't have domestic traffic. We also have no ethnic traffic, and we are not a Greek island, meaning we are not a mass tourism destination, which makes our recovery slower”. Ljubljana Airport expects to welcome 1.2 million passengers this year.

"Babett Stapel, recently said, “Ljubljana Airport is recovering well, although one needs to take into account its specific circumstances. We differ from other airports in the region in that we don't have domestic traffic."
Babett is always looking for "excuses". LJU deserves much much more than half a million. A touristic country and richest Balkan state. She is always explaining and explaining but fails to provide facts. Well, at least figures are looking better but LCC are definitely needed in LJU.

      Fails to provide facts?

“We differ from other airports in the region in that we don't have domestic traffic. We also have no ethnic traffic, and we are not a Greek island, meaning we are not a mass tourism destination,”

      Sounds pretty factual to me.

Not having Adria transfer traffic from PRN, SKP, TIA to CPH, AMS, FRA.. and looking at those numbers, numbers don't seem bad. With an airline covering additional 5 destinations in EU, traffic would completly recover.

      +1

LJU without transfer is basically on 2019 level or just slightly below
This will further increase with 3 weekly Wizz to SKP
ZRH in June was at 90% of 2019

Not true, without counting transfers back in 2019, LJU traffic is still 26% down from 2019 levels (jan-jun).

For me, the situation is under control! There is no way to expect transfer passengers when Tirana and Pristina are booming or all of BIH well informed. All national carriers, however, need flights to Vienna and often to major hubs. Adding weaker destinations would also be good like Madrid, Lisbon, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Bucharest, Rome, Milan and others.

Transfer was probl around 125K 6 months. Which wld be around 23%
That xfer was only 11.7%, a bit too low in my eyes. What was their SUTT in 2019? I thought they also had eve flts SKP PRN TIA plus SJJ TGD PRN SKP TIA at noon. But this is just guess. Cant remember anymore

How lame one needs to be on scale 1 to Luftcartel to blame non-existance of domestic traffic for poor results? Like Zag thrives on traffic between Osijek and Pula? Wtf Fraport?

Personally, in my opinion, the complex situation that appears during the pandemic is under control. The market took care of itself. The creation of a national airline will be just one addition to everything.
Let's look on the bright side. These are the routes of Adria and today's successors.
Frankfurt, Munich - Lufthansa, Zurich - Switzerland, Brussels - SN, Skopje - Wizz, Pristina - GP Aviation, Athens - Aegean, charter program - Trade Air. Podgorica - Air Montenegro. Alternative to Sarajevo and Tirana with Tivat and Nis.
Wizz Air is also adding flights to Tirana from Trieste.

There is also a weekly charter to Barcelona with Trade Air. Apparently the Slovenians really have a strong interest in Spain. Also a good alternative to Dusseldorf or Berlin is Luxembourg (not as an alternative and as a destination in this region). Athena is a good idea. We also have flights to Helsinki again. The only thing that is not missing is Copenhagen, Manchester, Berlin and all of Vienna. I'm also noticing more flights to Tunisia with Nouvelair.
As for Trieste, I often travel to Rome from there and I can say that there are quite a few travelers from Croatia and Slovenia. Tirana is a good addition, but so are Ryanair's Spanish destinations.

Still, that the capital city airport of a fairly rich country is al pari in passanger trafic with ZAD find hard to understand.

I remember LJU capitalizing on the airport closures at other Ex-Yu airports between 1993-2001. It made a huge profit and the number of passengers was well beyond its natural abilities. Now that things are relatively calm, it has reverted to reality. Yes, it is a capital city, but a very small one with a very small market. Those glory days are long gone.
