Zagreb Airport sees record June but growth slows

NEWS FLASH

Zagreb Airport registered its busiest June on record by handling 347.019 passengers during the month. The figure represents an increase of 18.5% on last year and up 3.1% on the pre-pandemic 2019. The passenger growth rate notably slowed in May and June compared to the rest of the first half of the year. The slowdown in May was attributed to night-time runway work which led to the cancellation of over a hundred flights. During the six-month period, Zagreb Airport welcomed 1.693.512 travellers, up 30.3% and 10.4% on 2022 and 2019 respectively.

So we have here the situation that difference comparing to June 2019 (when Ryanair did not fly to ZAG) is only tiny 3%!

I truly wonder what would have happened in Zagreb if FR had not arrived with so many flights. It seems they would not have been far from Ljubljana based on recovery percentage.

Terrible noumbers for June, I expected figure would be around 350-370. To handle 347, or 13k short of anticipated figure for June could indicate slight change to overall figure that is expected at the end of this year, however for nearly 2-3 days in June airport was literally closed due to bad weather so flights were diverted to other airports. Same goes with Ljubljana airport which was also affected. Let’s hope the rest of the year is on the track, 4.0 million pax for 2023 would be impressive, anything above 3.75 would be great, and anything over 3.85 million would be outstanding.

      So far - 1.693 000
      July - 380-400 000
      August - 410-420 000
      September - 380-400 000
      October - 370-390 000
      November - 310-320 000
      December - 300-310 000
      Total: 3850 000 - 3940 000

Airport was neither closed and certainly not for 2 to 3 days. Please don't make things up.

I said literally, as bad weather and storms forced airlines to divert to other airports. Airport wasn't closed, but traffic did suffer for 2-3 days.

    5. Anonymous11:05

There were less than 5 diverted flights!

I stand corrected then, I can't explain slump. May would have been on target, but 120 flights were cancelled due to runway works. June I can't explain.

    8. My prediction is: you'll have to make adjustments to your predictions every single month until the end of the year.
In July ZAG could have 380k and in August 400k. Everything from September onward is just reaching.
Last year there was a World Cup in November and December and still ZAG didn't even come close to 300k in those last two months.
3.75 - 3.78 million is realistic. Anything above that just won't happen this year.
I'd like to be proven wrong but don't think that'll happen.

No, RTL got it wrong. The "journalist" wrongly reported the planned passenger numbers in the table, not the actual number.

Hard to be exact, but yes i predicted based on seats available. 347 000 is well bellow of what was available. 347000 passengers/4017 flights= load factor average of 86.3 which is ok, but considering it is the start of summer season, I was expecting around 90, so my prediction of 360 000 to 370 000. I guess, for July 380 000 is based on 41gKFtogHYuTLgtmff2zbx9hk7DWS8VB612gDjf1YFPsfT66jV4UFCBNJSsUKKBpwf9y4CunA1UoucxSkm8NLtmRFxDFATc41gKFtogHYuTLgtmff2zbx9hk7DWS8VB612gDjf1YFPsfT66jV4UFCBNJSsUKKBpwf9y4CunA1UoucxSkm8NLtmRFxDFATcmillion is most likely, could be over 3.9 million. We need to wait and see.

Not sure what happened to half of my text up, so this is a repost.

I guess, for July 380 000 is based on 4200 flight operations and 91 load factor. August 4400 flight operations and around 410 000 passengers, we’ll see there.

Of course we’ll see the final figure in January, but 3.85 million is most likely, could be over 3.9 million. We need to wait and see.

Envy? By who, Air Serbia? With double the fleet, destinations and passengers? With full business class on a widebody to intercontinental destinations all while being profitable?

Personally I don't mind if comments are from someone paid to post them, as long as they are using common sense and have valid arguments and facts. This envy thing makes no sense to me. A220 is a fine plane but just having them will not magically make airline successful.

ZAG growing at 3% compared to PRN at 50% over 2019 numbers means ZAG is on a downward path.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous11:15

It is totally unrelated. For PRN, knowing there is no tourists practically, it means the people are working/living massively abroad. With the visa release, it will jump for additional 50% I suppose.

Some other airport growing faster, doesn't mean the airport growing slower is on a downward path.
According to that "logic" the largest European airports are also on a downward trend compared to PRN.
Let's look at a different trend: last year PRN was ahead of ZAG until November. This year, it's been behind ZAG from the very beginning, and that won't change either. What about that trend?
There's a reason why PRN has recovered faster than any other airport in Europe and we all know why: diaspora, low living standard and a lack of any other infrastructure connecting it to Europe - Kosovo, for all intents and purposes, is an island in the middle of the Balkans.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous19:57

With 50% growth compared to ZAG at 3%, PRN will be ahead of ZAG in 2-3 years. Nothing you can do prevent it.
