Belgrade and Zagreb airports seek flights to the Caucasus

The airports in both Belgrade and Zagreb have seen growing demand for flights from the main gateways in the Caucasus - Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia - which combined with transfer traffic to and from Western Europe and North America, could provide healthy loads on nonstop flights.

In Belgrade, destinations with the greatest amount of indirect traffic from the region are Tbilisi and Baku. The Georgian Embassy in Greece, which covers Serbia, has been facilitating talks between interested carriers. “Currently, airlines are interested in initially operating seasonal summer flights in order to trail the demand. However, negotiations are still taking place”, the Embassy said. On the other hand, late last year, Serbia’s President noted flights between Belgrade and Baku would launch by the end of 2023, although, at this point, there is no evidence the service will materialise. “You need three hours and ten minutes [from Belgrade] to Baku, to visit the beautiful city on the Caspian Sea. This is excellent for Serbian tourists and businesspeople but also Azeri businessmen to visit Serbia. Therefore, after Chicago, another important route will be introduced in 2023”, the Serbian President said. Air Serbia has previously also spoken about the Caucasus region as part of its future expansion plans. “We are looking at countries like Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia, for which Belgrade would be a good option for connecting to Europe”, Air Serbia’s CEO, Jiri Marek, said last summer.

Zagreb Airport sees the most indirect traffic in the Caucasus region from the Armenian capital of Yerevan, followed by Baku in Azerbaijan. Earlier this year, Zagreb Airport launched a new incentive scheme dubbed “The Connecting Capital Cities Incentive Model”. Among sixteen destinations that are part of the program, airlines are eligible for incentives for launching flights from both Yerevan and Baku. The Croatian Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs has expressed its hope for the launch of operations from Baku in the coming period. "We expect a continuous rise in the number of Azeri tourists and businesspeople visiting Croatia, and vice versa. Therefore, we believe that seasonal nonstop flights from Baku to Zagreb and other destinations such as Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar or Pula are feasible". Over the past fifteen year, Azerbaijan's national carrier AZAL has operated charter flights on ocassion to both Split and Zadar.

      Croatia is an alliance member and well integrated with LH so it means better connection that JU.
      The only difference is that JU can offer routes with less connections. unfortunately the caucuses are just a bit too far for the dash-8 and the ATR.
      but the A220 and JU smaller Embraer will be good for this route.

      I hope that Tbilisi and Yerevan are launched to belgrade soon.

      Maybe you should make your mind up : Are you in favour of "pan-Slavic" or at least South Slavic cooperation, what was your opinion so far, or are you in favour of LH and Germany, which are the biggest actual destroyers of Slavic "World", not only in aviation, but generally. And in this particular case, OU offers connections to 13 destinations from its so called "hub", while JU is offering 60 or more connections, long-haul included. Stupidity that someone would travel from Caucasus to Germany via Croatia to connect to other flights, I will not comment at all

      What AS is doing provides great value for folks in nyc & Chicago area looking to travel to area. I hope they continue this and see opportunities other areas where demand is present from exyu people and compete for market share with established companies and createnew markets as well. Travel time & cost are reduced. I think croatia airlines could do something similar depending on their strategy and market as their country is home to tons of beautiful ⛱️

      im always in favour of pan-slavic cooperation,

      i agree that Germany but also turkey have worked together against us. and yes OU has been destroyed by LH but in this case i just want to recognize the benefit and good things for OU when there is something. Yes JU has more destinations but they don't do well with timing for connections not being part of an alliance but OU can do that.

      I want to see the bright side or the opportunity for success in any of the slavic airlines. who knows maybe they read this blog and steal a good idea from some of the comments.

      They are not interested in opportunities. They are not interested in taking advantage of the biggest ex-yu aviation market. They are not interested in the most perfect geographical and geopolitical position of Croatia. They are not interested in growing market share with diaspora and booming tourism. They are not interested in offering connections to the ex-yu, entire Balkans, and in this case, Caucasus. They are not interested in decently connecting all parts of Croatia with which other. They are not interested in growing their operations, fleet and network. They are not interested in hiring competent professionals. They are not interested in increasing work productivity. They are not interested in flying with profits or at least reducing losses. They are not interested in anything but in providing high quality feed to LH in Minken and Vrankvurt, on expense of croatian poor people.

      Azerbejdžan has own national flag carrier, highly subventionized, flys many political outes. BEG is in the plans. Azerbejdžan is much richer then other Caucasian countries.

    LOT can make all three of them work (even with the Russian and Ukrainian airspace closed), so why wouldn’t Air Serbia be able to pull it off. BEG is well placed to act as a connecting hub for the Caucasus.
