Wizz Air inaugurated services between Skopje and Ljubljana yesterday evening, linking the two cities with a nonstop air service for the first time in exactly four years. Flights were last maintained by Adria Airways, which discontinued operations after declaring bankruptcy on September 30, 2019. The budget carrier will maintain two weekly flights between the two capitals until late October, increasing to three weekly thereafter, primarily with the Airbus A321 aircraft. The inaugural service to the Slovenian capital was sold out. "We are happy that Wizz Air recognised this demand and we believe that their service will meet the needs of our passengers. The introduction of this new route will also serve leisure travellers and strengthen our bonds with Slovenia. Ljubljana, with its rich cultural heritage and vibrant atmosphere, has been a highly anticipated destination for travelers from Skopje. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Wizz for their decision to add this route from their Skopje base, thus enhancing regional connectivity”, the general manager of airport operator TAV Macedonia, Nejat Kurt, said. Skopje will further expand its network of destinations with former Yugoslav capitals when Aegean Airlines launches services from the city to Sarajevo next Monday.

DeleteObviously there is demand for this route as after the demise of Adria, a solution was found after 4 years. It is not that fast, but there was also a pandemic.

DeleteThe flights will operate twice a week until the end of October. After that they will be incresed on three times per week, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

DeleteI think TK flying into Australia soon might kill the chances of Qatar returning, Qatar were also recently rejected for more flights from Australia. Meanwhile, Dubai has lots of capacity from Australia and would become the #1 route for Australia - Macedonia since Turkish will be 2 stops.
DeleteThere is large Macedonian and Albanian community in Slovenia with no flights connecting them with Kosovo and Macedonia. Until now.
ReplyDeleteAlot of Macedonian students also study in Slovenia , the number of that young people is pretty big. And yes there is also good number of Macedonians who live and work in Slovenia
DeleteNumber one are the students from Macedonia that study there and come here a few times per year with bus which takes them 14h. Now that there is air connection, they will be able to come here more often plus they can find return ticket for 20-30 euros. On the second place is the Macedonians that live and work in Slovenia as well as in Trieste and other regions. Prishtina has direct flights to Ljubljana twice a week. The flight from SKP to LJU yesterday was full of young people, that tells u everything.

Deletei can imagine. If Wizz will have to pick a croatian route from SKP it probably will be RJK (with ZAG and SPU taken by OU). It can serve Istra. Kvarner, northern Dalmatia and the very price sensitive ones from Zagreb
DeleteIt will make more sense if W6 launch flights from Skopje to Trieste then to Rijeka. With that they will cover one more part of Italy full of balkans and will make the holidays to croatia for us to be cheaper.

Deleteall the best to this route maybe it will "inspire" Wizz for more east European destinations from SKP (silently: PRG)
ReplyDeleteWizz will introduce more routes in the days coming from SKP , this year they will handle around 1.5 mil pax which is great numbers , that must speak enough for opening new destinations and based more planes.
DeleteMost likely the next routes that need to be scheduled are Stuttgart and Salzburg, let’s hope they do it when the 6th aircraft is parked!

DeleteMy guess is that next winter we could see 4-5x weekly flights to Skopje. Let's wait and see, the flight time is only 1h so it's not optimal for LCC but still, if OU was smart they would start it 2 years ago with Dashes

DeleteOU and smart ... but only a fraction of the LJU-SKP market used OU (or JU) so theres was definitely space there (and in general for routes out of SKP and LJU)

Adria flew it daily and sometimes even 2wice a day with mix of CRJ900 and A320
They will increase to 3x weekly, which I think is solid. Especially with 321
