Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport’s downgrade of its Instrument Landing System (ILS) from a CAT IIIb to a CAT I has been extended until February 23 until 21.00 CET. The downgrade occurred when a Marathon Airlines Embraer E195 aircraft operating on behalf of Air Serbia struck ILS equipment upon take off on Sunday, February 18. The ILS provides pilots with both vertical and horizontal guidance during an approach to land, especially in low-visibility conditions such as fog or heavy rain. The higher the category in value, the more challenging weather conditions the ILS can support. The CAT III system, which is the highest, is divided into three categories – a, b and c - and are capable of guiding an aircraft to a landing in very low visibility conditions, often down to zero visibility. In a statement, Belgrade Airport said, “Air traffic at Belgrade Airport is running smoothly, and all competent services are working on quickly establishing technical conditions for landing and take-off in a dense fog setting”. Since the incident and the ILS downgrade, weather conditions and visibility in Belgrade have been good, with no impact to air traffic so far.
The importance of a backup runway is apparent.
