President: Air Serbia eyeing Seoul, adding new US and China routes

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has said the state-owned national carrier Air Serbia will introduce one new destination in the United States and two in China for a total of three in each country, while services to the South Korean capital of Seoul are currently being considered. Speaking at a press conference following talks with his counterpart from the Central African Republic, Mr Vučić, said, “During this year we will have three scheduled routes to China. In addition to Tianjin, which is near Beijing, they include Guangzhou and Shanghai. We will also have three routes to the United States. We already have New York and Chicago, and we will also add flights to Miami. We are reviewing the possibility of a new quick service to Seoul too. It is difficult to source wide-body aircraft which are affordable, but it is our duty to find those aircraft.”.

Air Serbia has so far confirmed it plans to introduce flights to both Shanghai and Guangzhou this year. It previously said it had reached an agreement to expand its fleet with two wide-body aircraft, which will be arriving this year. Since then, the country’s Ambassador to the United States noted the carrier was in advanced talks with Miami Airport over the introduction of flights to the city and that ticket sales could begin as early as this year. “Miami is next in the US. Discussions about the new Miami service have been taking place since at least last year. Air Serbia is pretty far in talks with MIA [Miami International Airport]. I think it will happen this year. If the carrier gets new long haul airplanes by April, then the Miami flight could be added fairly quickly”, Marko Djurić, Serbia’s Ambassador to the US, said last month.

The remarks largely align with Air Serbia's previously disclosed plans. The airline has openly acknowledged obtaining permits for routes to Shanghai and Guangzhou. It had earlier mentioned the potential inclusion of Miami or Toronto as its third destination in North America, although it had said its newest route to the continent would commence in 2025. The CEO has also indicated a review of Far East Asian destinations, such as Seoul and Tokyo, for potential launch in the future. “Once we expand to these cities in China, we will most likely add another destination in North America and, in the near future, we will also look beyond China in the Far East, most likely South Korea and Japan”, the company’s CEO, Jiri Marek, noted.

Chicago service was announced 10 months in advance. Based on priority given to other destinations, it is unlikely Air Serbia would announce Toronto this year, meaning service won't start in 2025. The earliest it could possibly start is summer of 2026. By then Air Canada and Air Transat will see updates to their fleets and might have different plans when it comes to Belgrade.

Except The President of Serbia is not the government, which owns the airline. Which means his responsibility for the airline is zero and you can't have people who are not responsible for something making important decisions about that. I mean, you can but that means that together with him, the airline will be gone too. That would be bad, so we need a system in our aviation, not the head of state deciding on routes.

Honestly praising Canada that much is too much. The country is in a deep crisis. The imported immigrants are increasing and there is no housing. The Balkan diaspora has decreased a lot and this obsession with Toronto is insane. Please do some investigation about what really is happening in Canada at the moment and you will be shocked. Look at the homeless shocking terrifying videos, lack of doctors, very expensive houses. Toronto is a very expensive and seasonal airport. Similar to Australia, Canada population is concentrated in the south only or away from the desert in Australia. It is really not that hard to find information and think logically. Let Air Serbia focus on JFK and ORD for the time being. Both routes are apparently doing well and they can compete with LOT when it comes to prices, because they are pretty good and many passengers will not complain and not mind flying older A330s because they know the prices are very good and not expect "chic" experience. Simple and common sense.

      Delete
    10. Slav.Man20:34

okay its understandable, that canada is seasonal. JU management has said it multiple times but then what is the opposition to launching it seasonally? they have seasonal routes in europe to make a profit for when there is demand. they serve the great demand between the YUG/Balkans for the summer and gives more of a boost to their regional network.
as for australia, that is a long way away. the closest they can get with a direct flight to is Perth with the A330-200 which is a great place but without the neo it will be very expensive ticket wise. or unless they fly with a stop in singapore like many airlines do.

      Delete
    11. Anonymous06:53

  12. Anonymous09:40

It’s not just A330’s they need to source. Any expansion of long haul will grow demand for transfers. I mean from Sarajevo recently I have flown a few times and over 50% of passengers on all of them were transfer. I note they have started to fly their airbus on the route but this is an example of a route out growing the ATR. This is also positive.

When a politician gets involved in speeches like this, it immediately becomes suspicious. Also again, why is this obsession of growing and growing when in fact Air Serbia first needs to fix its fleet issues, continue with regional expansion and also why Seoul when Budapest already has a very strong Korean coverage. This, oh we are BIGGER and we are the kings of the region Balkan mentality is so present.
Read other comments about Toronto over and and over again. Guys, are you blind? There are SO many videos of why people are leaving Canada, plus it is a very seasonal destination.
Also long-haul flights are away from cheap and always need a lot of money. It took TK ages to enter Australia but you cannot compare them with EK.
Also JU had a very serious incident and almost mortal and again obsessed with expansions and expansions. The A330s are okay, not modern, but decent but why not deploy them on CHARTERS as well? Think they will make more money or use them as ACMI during the weaker season as many other European airlines do it. It will also be very very curious how the Romanian HiSky perform on their JFK route. This is an expensive route with slots for a new airline and if Delta failed in the past it was for some reason. Would not say Romanian aviation is in the best shape for such a big country.
It is all fine for airlines to grow, but Air Serbia is just small and the bigger boys will immediatly take advantage. Remember what happened with Malév? All the vultures swarmed BUD. Imo, JU must focus on regional development as it working well at the moment, find ways of more transfer traffic like they did with AUH for example. Strongly consider the Caucasus but comments always talking about Miami and Toronto are crazy. Miami has a huge latino community and there is a very large competition. Emirates just announced Bogotá (which btw is very cool airport)

    https://loyaltylobby.com/2024/02/21/emirates-introduces-daily-miami-bogota-miami-fifth-freedom-flights-from-june-3-2024/

Enough of those expansions for JU, focus on fixing the fleet and grow slowly which in my opinion OU is going to do but are a bit more "silent" and "conservative". Yet again, they are now facing fierce competition with Ryanair like many other countries in the region.
Do not think Toronto will be doable. Canada is very cold, very seasonal, now they have huge problems with housing and homeless. Yes, there is probably an Eastern European Balkan diaspora, but cannot compare it with Chicago for example. Canada has many many problems, you can just go to YouTube and see many videos of "betrayed immigrants" or "why I chose to leave Canada" with thousands of views.
If anyone working for JU is reading this comment first fix the fleet issues, focus on regional expansion, continue finding ATRs or if you can lease new ones. Try to find newer A330s because it is an EXCELLENT plane and much better than the Dreamliners (personal opinion). Of course, who would also not love the classic 773 and elegant A350.
