Greek carrier Sky Express will commence its second summer holiday service to Belgrade next year, complementing flights from Heraklion which were launched this year. Starting June 16, 2025, the carrier will add a weekly rotation between Rhodes and the Serbian capital, operated by its 186-seat Airbus A320neo aircraft. The service will be maintained until September 22. The carrier will also restore its seasonal leisure flights from Heraklion which were introduced this year and will again be maintained once per week from June 15 until September 21. It will also deploy the A320neo between the two cities.
Sky Express will compete against Air Serbia on the new Rhodes service. However, while Sky Express is only expected to cater for travellers booking through tour operators, Air Serbia markets its Rhodes flights as a scheduled service, making tickets available to the general public. The two carriers have an interline agreement in place enabling Air Serbia’s passengers to connect onto Sky Express’ domestic network of 26 destinations via Athens under a single itinerary, Similarly, Sky Express travellers can connect onto Air Serbia’s European network via Belgrade. Sky Express has recently been expanding its scheduled network of European destinations from Athens by adding Vienna, Prague, Tirana, Tbilisi and Yerevan. Apart from these, it also serves Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Rome, Larnaca, London Gatwick, Munich, Milan and Sofia outside of Greece. Flights between Belgrade and Athens are currently served by Air Serbia and Aegean Airlines, with the duo handling 140.960 passengers between the two capitals during the first three quarters of this year, representing an increase of 4.2% on the same period in 2023. During the summer of 2025, Aegean Airlines will increase its frequencies between the two from four to six weekly (depending on the month) to daily, while the Serbian flag carrier will increase frequencies from twelve to fourteen weekly. During the 2025 peak summer travel season, Air Serbia will operate 38 weekly scheduled flights to Greece, up from 34 weekly. In addition to the double daily Athens service they include nine weekly Thessaloniki, four weekly Heraklion and Rhodes, three weekly Corfu, as well as two weekly Chania and Mykonkos rotations. The airline will also introduce a new regular charter service from Belgrade to Kavala in northern Greece.

ReplyDeleteThis is what happens when Air Serbia and Wizz Air can't meet growing demand from BEG. Obviously there is room for more flights between BEG and RHO. Since neither of the two can do it, tour operators looked elsewhere.
DeleteI find it interesting how Aegean was somewhat defeated on leisure routes from BEG to Greece. Seems like they are focusing on their hub in Athens while Sky Express is slowly expanding their presence in BEG.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sky Express eventually launches scheduled flights to BEG. They could even do it on the ATR from ATH.
Good to see Aegean boost BEG to daily. They are a decent alternative to TK for flights to the Middle East.
Once they get more aircraft I can definitely see them launching BEG, OTP and probably BUD too.

They don't have the best track record in Greece. They tried Rhodes, Zakynthos and Santorini and all have failed. HER seems to do ok so my guess is that they are not rushing to go up against JU and A3 on BEG-ATH.
DeleteWith triple daily flights it won't be that easy to break though. ATH is also a very expensive airport so they can't offer extremely low fares.
When it comes to leisure routes of out BEG, they seem to focus on consolidating their position in places like BCN and LCA.
Rhodes is nice but their taxi drivers will try to cheat. Beware!

ReplyDeletePretty decent. On time, young and pleasant crews, all their aircraft are brand new.
DeleteGreat domestic network. BUT their call center is understaffed. They also don't offer food or WiFi unlike Aegean. They are usually cheaper than them though.
I flew with them from Athens to Milos and back, earlier this year. Very short flights, so not much to say. But on the way back, all checked luggage was left in Milos, apparently because of a weight issue. Bags arrived the next day, and I'm still chasing them to reimburse the costs I had as a result. I'm chasing, they're ignoring. I will probably just go to their office next time I'm in Athens and barricade myself there until they pat me.

DeleteI had exactly the same experience with OA last summer! We checked in our hand luggage at MLO thinking it's easier than managing it on an ATR42 - after all, they can't lose bags on a direct 20 min flight, right? Huge mistake, as they left the bags behind in Milos and it took 4 days for them to be "found" (as if there's somewhere to lose them, lol) and another 4 to be delivered from ATH back home to CDG.
OA did pay up for first expenses, though, and quite quickly at that, I think it took them around two weeks. I managed to extract €70 for underwear and cosmetics.

DeleteThis schedule is perfect for tourist from Serbia. You arrive early in the morning to Rhodes and you can spend whole day at beach. Return flight is late in the evening, just after midnight, meaning that you also have whole last day at the beach. Perfect if you ask me!
DeleteHow that? One arrives 6 am at the hotel and can't check in till 3 pm. Same leaving - check out at 11 am and flight is next day. That's more than awkward and inconvenient. Most hotels nowadays seem to charge almost a full night for such considerable late check out or early check in.
DeleteConvinced they do this type of schedule much rather with a less significant eastern European source market airport (pax are usually less fussy) than with such in Western or Central Europe.
