NEWS FLASH

Zadar Airport is expected to shortly commence the first phase of its much-delayed multi-million euro expansion and overhaul. Divided into four separate phases, the airport will soon begin work on the third one, which includes the expansion of the departures and arrivals area and gates at the existing passenger terminal. The work, valued at 15.3 million euros, will be carried out over the next fourteen months. It is not expected to have an impact on traffic. Subsequent phases of the project will see the construction of a new terminal, which will be joined into a single functioning unit with the existing one. The new terminal will boast nine gates, a baggage sorting facility, two baggage carrousels and the capacity to seat 1.480 people. The airport also plans to build a railway to the Gaženica port with the train terminal to be located in the underground car park. An overhaul of the runway and its extension by 700 metres, to 3.200 metres, is also planned, while the apron will be overhauled. Work on the runway will see an increase in weight bearing capacity and enable the airport to handle wide-body aircraft.

Work on the project, which has a total value of 100 million euros, was initially expected to commence in 2020. It will take several years to complete. “Most of the funding will come from the airport’s own capital, considering the project’s timeframe and phased approach. The lengthening of the runway and the increase in its weight bearing capacity will be partially funded by the European Union”, the airport previously said.
