How can they achieve such an impressive performance without having a national carrier?

Airlines from Turkiye and LH group are defacto their national carriers. Lowcosters come and go.

SJJ is growing so much exactly because there is no national airline getting protection from foreign competition.

Sarajevo would grow even more with PSO flights that countries like Croatia or Montenegro have, it wouldn't have to rely on foreign airlines to handle key routes such as Stockholm, Prague, Madrid, Ankara etc. and would be much closer to Skopje and Priština. Things have been moving in the right direction lately though and a LCC airline base could put them where they belong.

@Anonymous14:48 Is it so? We read here earlier that SJJ is growing because Ryan is growing there from copious amounts of financial support from tourist board.

It doesn't make sense for 🇧🇦 to have a national carrier. No-one would take it seriously, and it would be hard for it to get any codeshare or interline agreements, apart from maybe JU, OU and TK. Everything that a national carrier would be able to do is possible without such a carrier as well, and it works much better that way.

JU could have been in the top 10 list of airlines serving the airport if they would offer one more flight a day with an ATR.

Yes, it is a shame that passengers have to be overnight in Belgrade for half of their connecting flights

Fantastic! And there's still room for even more improvements. The BER, HAM, DUS and HAJ routes by EW and GVA by LX announced for 2026 will provide even more travellers, and hopefully routes like Amsterdam (probably KLM or Transavia), Madrid (Iberia), Prague (Smartwings, Eurowings or Ryanair), Ankara (AJet, Pegasus or SunExpress) and Cairo (Egyptair) will be launched as well at some point. A couple of extra Ryanair routes are possible too.
