NEWS FLASH
Leisure carrier TUI Airways will deploy its 325-seat Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on services between Birmingham and Pula during the upcoming summer season. The wide-body aircraft is scheduled to operate 22 rotations, from May 9 through to October 3, each Saturday. While TUI has previously utilised wide-body equipment on flights to Pula, it did not do so last year. In addition to the Birmingham service, the airline will once again assign the 787-8 to select summer rotations from London Gatwick and Manchester to Dubrovnik.

Nice!
ReplyDeleteWhy is Pula so popular?
ReplyDeleteZAG alternative?
Istra has always been popular with UK tourists. During yugo times, several UK companies operated charters to Pula, including British Airways which was sending L15 and 747 sometimes. JAT had scheduled seasonal flights to Heathrow, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow. Both Adria and Aviogenex had several aircraft based in Pula in summer, with majority of flights operated to UK destinations. Almost all airports in the UK had flights to Pula, scheduled or charter. Lot of UK citizens have houses in Pula today, and Istra is in many things similar to Tuscany, which is also one of the favourite spots for Britons. Really nothing to do with Zagreb.
DeleteOn the contrary, it's because demand is highly uniform. Tourists come for a full week or for two weeks, so you can load them up easily into low-frequency high-density services.
Delete@PIR, thanks!

DeleteOnly Easyjet only to London has 5 weekly flights. Plus TUI. Plus Ryanair. Plus Jet2. Plus others. So, low-frequency is simply not true.
First of all, London is a bit of an exception. The article is about Birmingham.
DeleteBut even so, your point is not really true. easyJet flies five times weekly just two months in the year. Come on. You picked the height of the season in August. Even for almost all of June there are only THREE flights per week to London. In April, easyJet doesn't even fly on the route. In October there are only two flights per week. And Ryanair doesn't even fly to Pula from Stansted until June!

Let's get real
The article is not about Birmingham but about wide bodies to Pula. I never wrote about winter, I mentioned seasonal or season few times. Pula has decent traffic to UK in season. Everything I wrote is correct but if you disagree it's your right and I will not object to it. Cheers!
DeleteBravo Hrvatska!
ReplyDeleteno relevance to Zagreb. Tourists like to fly to nearest airport to their holiday destination. This is why Turkey built new airports to save 4 hour transfers to reports. In summer from UK there are direct flights from 9 UK airports to 10 Greek islands.
ReplyDeleteFor now TUI uses flights to Pula for stays in Lovran/Opatija.. the longest transfer from Pula at just 80 minutes depending how you drive( and that does not sell well). No way would they offer Istria resorts flying into ZAG airport. They know their job..They now have competition on LGW- PUY from Jet2Holidays starting early May. They know their job too. Beautiful Istria/Kvarner!
Very good post. Which proves my point how useless management of Rijeka airport is. RJK is closer to Opatija/Lovran than PUY, entire length of the route, Krk bridge to Opatija is highway, and it's approximately 30 minutes bus transfer. Yet, RJK has 2 weekly Stansted for 3 months peak season while PUY takes all of "their" passengers
DeleteRelax, Ryanair's Pula-London flights last only THREE WEEKS longer than Ryanair's Rijeka-London flights. Three weeks!
DeleteIstra is easily reached from Trieste airport with a rent a car also

DeleteYou are aware Ryanair and Stansted are the only airline and the only airport in the UK while Pula has 4 airlines and 6 or more airports ?
The only from RJK
