The Serbian Civil Aviation Directorate has held discussions with Egypt’s Ambassador to Serbia, Ahmed Salam Soliman, over the introduction of scheduled services between Belgrade and Cairo. It comes weeks after Serbia’s Prime Minister met with officials in Egypt where the matter was also discussed. Egypt’s Minister for Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathi Attia, said, “The launch of flights between Cairo and Belgrade would be a strategic step towards boosting tourism between Egypt and Serbia, particularly in light of Belgrade's preparations to host Expo 2027, which is expected to attract millions of visitors from around the world. Direct air connectivity will also make travel easier, reduce journey times and help increase the number of Serbian tourists visiting destinations across Egypt”.

The talks at the directorate were also attended by the Serbian Prime Minister “to review the situation surrounding the launch of the route from an operational perspective and coordinate the next steps between the two sides”, the Prime Minister’s office said.
Scheduled flights between Belgrade and Cairo were last operated in 2023 by Air Serbia. The airline commenced services between Belgrade and Cairo in the summer of 2019, but the flights were suspended following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. It then restored the overnight service during the summer of 2023, however, the route was suspended in February 2024 amid capacity restraints. Today, Belgrade remains connected to Egypt through Air Cairo's year-round scheduled service to Hurghada, complemented by a number of seasonal charter flights to several Egyptian destinations.

They are lacking flights to the region, besides the obvious flights to Belgrade also Zagreb/Ljubljana should probably work especially with their A220
ReplyDeleteIf you mean Egyptair A220s, they retired them 2 years ago.
DeleteYes, that crappy plane doesn’t fit anywhere. It is designed for American market actually
DeleteAir France, airBaltic, LOT, Swiss, Lufthansa all have ordered it. So the capabilities of the aircraft are not bad, they just do not fit everyone. Egyptair retired them because of the engines and if i am not mistaken, they do not perform well in arid climates.
Delete^ He is aware of all that, he just decided to hate on the A220 for ever the moment OU ordered it.
DeleteHow many times have they held talks and nothing came out of it.
ReplyDeleteJust support MS launching flights
JU was supposed to launch flights to CAI2 or 3 years ago according to Vucko.
DeleteIt did launch it 2-3 years ago. Read the article.
DeleteAnd stopped them a few months later.
DeleteThey could never compete with Star Alliance hubs in CAI, ATH & IST. They are just too strong.

DeleteOk, it didn't work out for them. What do you want?
DeleteActually it worked very fine, LF was great. Just turnaround time was too long and there weren’t enough capacity back then. But now, should be no problem for night flights at least
DeleteIt would be lovely to see MS in Belgrade.
ReplyDeleteOh man, is there really need for this much talk about this route on this level? It should be absolutely commercially viable flying there. If it's not, check why, and solve that, stop meeting at this level for a flight which, at least in that area, should be a no-brainer. It is not strategic step to any direction; those flights are coming and cutting every now and then.
ReplyDeleteMeetings are usually held to resolve issues.
DeleteYes, with PM office, if the issue is politics. Is it?
DeleteMeeting was held with the DCV. Issue is likely regulatory as Serbia and Egypt have very strict bilateral, likely allowing one scheduled route per airline from each country. Air Cairo currently holds Hurghda route. So it takes some time to be resolved as bureocracy in both countries is not the simplest. So they are meeting to resolve that issue and for some reason you are enraged.
