Austrian Airlines will conclude its seasonal flights between Vienna and Ohrid several weeks earlier than initially planned and reduce frequencies during the latter part of September. The carrier, which had already postponed the launch of the route from May 17 to June 21, now plans to end operations on September 27 instead of October 18. From September 17 until the final service, flights will operate once per week, down from two weekly.

Pity, I'm wondering what is the reason, since few days ago in one of the comments we read that the flights are full :(

DeleteRegretfully, it is obvious Ohrid cannot deliver enough demand and especially not in line with growing ambitions of its mnmgt

DeleteOhrid have 3 flag carriers this summer to IST,VIE and BEG , all of them are seasonal routes , they are not year round , the demand is half of June,July , August and half September

Delete16:54 this route is just summer seasonal route and there is no subsidies included. Would be very not normal to giwe someone subsidies for just 3 months right , doesnt make any sense. But serving the airport in its peak months is great!

ReplyDeleteNo airline can't manage year round work in a seasonal airports. How big is Podgorica and half of their routes are seasonal not year round ? Just compare and think about. Here are Split and Dubrovnik as well.
DeleteIn the whole reality, OHD & SKP can have direct flights 7 days a week from US, Canada, Australia and anywhere in Europe during summer break at Schools, mid June to late Aug, and around X-mas to New Year. The rest of the year even one day a week is too much for some routes.

DeleteNot only Ohrid any airport in the Ex-yu region in summer can serve literally any route possible, but in winter is dead. OHD for its size has 3 flag carriers with 2 of them Europes biggest is just amazing, thats why W6 will cover the rest of the season it is vetu simple. Hopefully next summer there will be more routes like this from Europe, Turkey , Israel , Middle east

DeleteSeasonality you all say, but meanwhile there are maybe 4 or 5 daily bus departures (many double deckers or 2,3 buses on each dep.) to Vienna from both Ohrid/Struga and many people are using SKP for further connections intra Europe and especially translatlantic, not included car travel.
ReplyDeleteWhy W6 flew smoothly there or BTS?Or maybe OS is changing once again with them for OHD flights considering the minister's announcement for basing W6 plane (hope he's not wrong again like when stated we have more legacy carriers then ever now and LH/LO left SKP now OS and TK making OHD seasonally.
Most of Albanians living in that area of Ohrid always using bus to travel to Vienna as its cheaper and they can have more luggage than airplane rules. But anyway OS serving the airport in the top peak months is still great achievement ,and hopefully to see them back in 2027
DeleteOhrid is only 2hours 40 from both Skopje and Tirana. Not that long if one is coming back to the region to visit family.
DeleteTourist season in Ohrid is short....the lake is high and swimming is hardly possible in second half of August. Of course Ohrid is historic city but not enough is done to promote it for anything else except swimming in the lake. During winter Ohrid is dead like any provincial small town.

DeleteI really hope OHD will get more like this route during next summer season, more Europe hubs, Middle east, Israel flights are also very much needed. For the rest of the year W6 will take care of the traffic with couple more intra Europe routes and thats it! Anyway the airprot with the renovation will have better look and more room for new routes and airlines.
ReplyDeleteIs Ohrid still UNESCO? The place is definatly not as nice as it was. But the landscape is very nice nearby. Bitola too. Definatly not a mainstream destination but good that AU served it in the summer.
