Site preparation work for the construction of a new commercial airport in Bihać, in north-western Bosnia and Herzegovina, has commenced. An access road to the future airport complex is under construction, while a perimeter fence has also been erected. The Federal Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina allocated a further 1.3 million euros for the project this week, on top of the 3.3 million euros provided over the past two years. "We will carry out preparatory work and finalise the project itself by the end of the year. We have already started the procedure for land expropriation, since the airport currently sits on 26 hectares. Of course, we will need much more space for this project. We are also currently raising additional funds for the runway", the General Manager of Bihać Airport, Elvedin Sedić, said.
The ambitious development of Bihać Airport is set for completion within the next three years. However, the Prime Minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Fadil Novalić, has expressed his disappointment with the pace of work. "Some things have been done but I visited Bihać twice last year and there was a completely different set of deadlines. The airport's management simply isn't sticking to them. The Federation has invested significant funds in this project and provided professional assistance. A few months ago the General Manager of Tuzla Airport, Rifet Karasalihović, visited Bihać on my orders and shared his knowledge and expertise", Mr Novalić said. He added that his government is aware there are insufficient funds for the construction of the runway and, as a result, is seeking a private investor to partake in the project. The Kuwaiti Investment Fund and Turkey's Çelebi Aviation Holding, a ground handling services company, have both expressed interest in providing funds and managing the airport in the future.
Despite plans for the construction of the runway to begin by the end of the year, this is now unlikely to occur. The winning design for the airport's terminal building was selected earlier this year (pictured above), with the entire project valued between twenty and 25 million euros. It includes the construction of a runway, passenger terminal and a control tower. "We must continue to provide financial support because this region won't see a boom in tourism it deserves without an airport", the Bosniak member of the tripartite Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bakir Izetbegović, said. Bihać is located near the Croatian border and is the country's eighth largest city.
Invest the money in existing airports. There really is no need for a fifth one, especially in this location.
ReplyDeleteAmen +1
DeleteWhy? This airport could attract toirists and gastos.
DeleteThis airport could serve a part of Croatia too.
DeletePeople dont forget its election year in BiH, dont be stupid, this is Trebinje v2!
DeleteIs it just me or it seems to be an election year in Bosnia every year.
DeleteYes every 2 year election, national/federal/regional/cantonal election and after 2 years local election
DeleteExactly. Not a single one of the 4 airports can even achieve 1 million passengers, but they need another one.
DeleteAnother one which they want to start building with a couple of million euro. If that doesn't smack of empty promises, than it can only be corruption.
Meanwhile, they are moving so slowly about building at least the main highway framework.
Bosnian politicians are always corrupt as hell
DeleteWould there be an issue with landing since Bihac is on the boarder?
ReplyDeleteWhy would that be an issue? It seems that boarders close to the airports are only issue in Balkans. Basel Mulhouse, Geneva, Weeze are perfect examples how that can work in a simle way without too much philosophy.
DeleteI know Osijek has some issues over planes landing because the air navigation control mixes between Croatia and Serbia. Something like that. That's why I ask.
DeleteIf that is so it is insane! It is not like we are in war any more. Passenger and plane safety should be above some imaginary lines. Madness. Even Kosovo bound planes BKPR are allowed to fly Serbian airspace to avoid thunderstorms.
DeleteThe question is why are aircraft going to Pristina only allowed to fly Serba in case of thunderstorms? Why not all the time?
DeleteWhat's a boarder, precious?
DeleteZagreb is literally on the Slovenian border. Dubrovnik is essentially sitting on two borders: with Bosnia and Montenegro. What kind of problems should there be?
DeleteI'm surprised this project has seen the light of day. I thought it would just end as pre election stunt.
ReplyDeleteThis start of construction is also a preelection stunt :D
DeleteWhy does a small country like BiH need 5 airports?
ReplyDeleteThe terrain of the country in Bosnia makes it difficult and long to get from one place to the other just to use the airport. Plus of course the political make up of the country which means everyone wants to have their own airport.
DeleteI think 4 functioning commercial airports is enough.
DeleteCrazy to think that every village in BiH should have an airport :D
Deletethen build ONE decent highway instead of 10 airports, omg...
DeleteHow much can be done for less than €5mil?
ReplyDeleteI would love if they raised funds and built an entirely new airport in Sarajevo that would work 24 hours and wouldn't have weather related problems.
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteAbsolutely no need for this project. There are other things money could be better spent on.
ReplyDeleteLike there is....?
DeleteI like the proposed design for Bihac Airport.
ReplyDeleteAgree. The design actually looks good. I like it.
DeleteAnd they optimistically have Jet Blue on the render :D
DeleteWell at least it's not the usual A380 all the airports have.
DeleteAll the ex-Yu airports have in their renders I mean.
DeleteIf they find a private investor to build this then I don't mind but I'm not for wasting public money on such a project.
ReplyDeleteThere´s actually not even ONE Airport project in Ex-Yu built by a "private investor". It´s either the state or very profitable concessions that are making it possible.
DeleteI have heard so many stories of Turkish investors wanting to build airports in ex-Yu and nothing ever happens of it.
ReplyDeleteWell they built new terminals in Pristina and Skopje.
DeleteBihac-Dortmund by Wizz Air
ReplyDeleteI suggest a joint venture with Ponikve, Morava, Trebinje, Niksic, Varazdin airports.
ReplyDeletelol megalomania is an issue in the Balkans.
Delete@ 9.54 under the leadership of Maribor Airport's SHS Aviation!
DeleteWhat's the use of building all these new airports when the existing ones are barely functional??
DeleteI'm lovin' it!
ReplyDeleteSince they built a terminal in Užice I wouldn't be surprised they do the same here.
ReplyDeleteAnd that worked out well...
DeleteBoth Uzice and Morava have VIP and business charters.
DeleteI doubt that was worth the money spent?
DeleteThat was not supposed to be a question haha mistake
DeleteThere is also medical traffic at Uzice and Kraljevo.
DeleteAnd let's not forget Airport Trebinje.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! Five airports! BiH will have the largest number of airports after Hrvatsko. Even competing with other Eastern countries:
ReplyDeleteCzechia: PRG, BRQ, OSR, KLV, PED
Slovak Rep: BTS, KSC, SLD, TAT
Hungary: BUD, DEB, SOB
Bulgaria: SOF, BOJ, VAR, PDV, GOZ
Srbija: BEG, INI
Slovenija: LJU, MBX, POW
I doubt this project will materialise. They will just waist some money on project documentation and roads and that's it.
ReplyDeleteHe he
ReplyDeleteIs this the Željava base??
ReplyDeleteNo Zeljava is completely unusable. There are still mines around the entire airport. Also part of it is in Croatian territory.
DeleteWell elections are this year
ReplyDeleteFor the "expert critics here":
ReplyDeleteBihac is 5 hours of driving away from Sarajevo. Train/bus is about 7-9 hours.
There are more than 100000 people from this area (Una-Sana Canton) living aboad ("diaspora").
At the same time, there are no valid arguments against this airport.
Bosnia, like many other countries around and farther away lacks air infrastructure. Even more "airports" should be built.
Yes!!! JetBlue direct flights JFK<->BHC
