NEWS FLASH

Low cost carrier Wizz Air will introduce a new service from Bratislava to Niš. The carrier has announced the opening of its base in the Slovak capital with the Niš route to begin on December 16, initially operating four times per week over the holiday period, reducing to three weekly from mid-January. Tickets are now available for purchase through the airline's website. Further flight details can be found here. Earlier this summer, the carrier scheduled the introduction of flights between Dortmund and Niš, commencing on January 5 next year. As a result, it will operate four destinations from the southeast Serbian city.

Are there any Serbs in Slovakia? I've always wondered where all these flights from Macedonia, Bulgaria and other destinations (balkan)in recent years are headed? Vienna, Bratislava?

BTS is mostly there as a cheaper alternative to Vienna.
In May I went to Bratislava for the first time ever and was shocked how close both cities are.

Exactly Nemjee, both OS and JU can be quite expensive, BTS is a very convenient alternative.

Vienna/Bratislava Airport, it's the same thing. Both serve both capitals. For example Jet2 offers both cities as a city break. At least I think most Slovaks use VIE, BTS is mainly for leisure flights, many of which are also sold by Austrian agencies.

Because nothing beats Jet2 holiday. 2 capitals now for the price of 1, that’s 8 capitals for a family of four

That would be great. Cheaper tickets than Vienna buses, which are around 70 Euro one way. Buses are always full

Why don't you want increased connectivity for BEG and a cheaper way of going to Austria than flying to VIE?
      What a strange comment.

5 flights to VIE by Ryanair, 4 flights to BTS by Wizzair, Vienna is best served destination in INI, and by a long shot.

Well, Ryan flies to Vienna, and Wizz will hardly beat that. They should have started Bratislava from Belgrade, as there is no low cost competition, but for some reason they consider Belgrade-Vienna a flight too short.

Ryan is not as cheap from INI to VIE as people might think. Since they became an only option to VIE prices went up, on some days flying AS via BEG is as cheap. Buses from Nis to Vienna are not as cheap as from Belgrade or Novi Sad and travel time is longer, no train service will be there to Vienna untill god knows where, Sofia is not that close as an alternative so flying to Bratislava is a good option. There are direct buses from the airport (at least they were back in the days) and you will be in Vienna in about an hour. Wizz chose a competitive line, it does not seem so random to me.

I know it is easy to reach Vienna, still, from Vienna airport it`s much easier. I also thought Ryan would charge much for INI-VIE, because that`s the ultimate goal of any airline. Now both companies will be engaged in a price war - which is excellent for consumers, but not for businesses. So it`s fine wit me, really, that Vienna becomes a competitive market from Niš, no objections to that. I fear wizz might not endure, though.

Lol "not as cheap from INI to VIE as people might think", I just bought return ticket for 44e.\

I can promise you one thing as someone who flies this route once every 2 months and always has a ticket booked - at any given time is FR cheaper than JU.

Anonymous13:29 Booking tickets in advance with lowest fare is not as representative as we are talking about diaspora that needs extra services, luggage, which brings the minimal fare of about 95euros (still pretty cheap), but there are some dates where the lowest fare is around 200e for return, which is pretty expensive and there jumps Wizz with Bratislava Addition what is about 35e return with the lowest fare.

I did fly with Lauda from INI to VIE for like 15e return, but booked like 5 months in advance. Diaspora rarely buys tickets that much in advance, thus paying more.

I live in south Czechia and for me Bratislava is even more convinient than Vienna. You may laugh, but on those flights from BTS/VIE to Nis I am seing tourists from Czechia and Slovakia. Not much, but they exist and make a weekend trip to south Serbia. Not to mention lot of Serbian workers in Slovakia (last 10 years) who may use this flight.
I would say, that this is not entirely VIE replacement but it openes also a new catchment area in Slovakia (Zilina, Trnava, ...).

    Wonderful addition.
Slovakia has very nice nature and mountains, Serbia is a slavic country not Eastern Europe as you might guess but Southern Europe. with a lot of temperament.
