A fake police officer reportedly operated at Ljubljana Airport last year, allegedly moving around the facility without obstruction with the help of an officer from the airport police station, Slovenian daily “Večer” has reported. The case was uncovered by criminal investigators last autumn, with criminal complaints filed against both individuals.
According to the newspaper, the man had been impersonating a police officer for some time, with staff at the airport police station failing to notice. He is said to have been assisted by a serving airport police officer, who allegedly provided him with a police uniform and lent him official duty ID cards, enabling him unrestricted access around the airport.
The impersonator has been reported for the criminal offence of falsely presenting himself as an official or military person, which carries either a fine “or a prison sentence of up to one year, while the police officer has been reported for aiding the offence. Despite the seriousness of the incident, “Večer claims the officer received only a written warning ahead of possible dismissal and remains employed at the Brnik airport police station.
The General Police Directorate confirmed an internal security procedure is ongoing and that the specialised department of the State Prosecutor’s Office has also been informed. Police Director General Damjan Petrič is said to have already introduced measures aimed at strengthening internal security, with unofficial reports suggesting closer oversight of security protocols and stricter checks of officers transferring between units.
