The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (STSB) has delivered a final report into the accident involving Croatia Airlines' Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 at Zurich Airport on September 27, 2013, when on a flight from Zagreb to the Swiss city the pilots were unable to extend the nose gear on approach, forcing the aircraft to declare an emergency and land with its main landing gear only. None of the sixty passengers and four crew members were injured, however, the aircraft was badly damaged. The accident is attributed to the fact that the flight crew was unsuccessful in extending the nose landing gear and then had to conduct a landing with the extended main landing gear and retracted nose landing gear. The investigation concluded that the weight on wheel (WOW) cover plate on the nose landing gear was broken on both lower lugs so that it was bent upwards around the upper tab mounts and was trapped in the nose gear mechanism, which prevented the extension. As a result, the STSB has issued two safety recommendations.
The full final report, in both German and English, can be found here (PDF document).
