Niš Airport eyes Russia flights

Monday, January 11, 2016

Niš Airport and local authorities from Kaluga in western Russia held talks over the weekend to discuss potential services between the two cities. Two charter flights from Kaluga to Niš, carrying Russian holidaymakers visiting the Kopaonik ski resort were operated by Red Wings Airlines' Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft over the past ten days. "Kaluga Airport was opened six months ago and we are still examining potential connections. Niš Airport will be one of our priorities", Anatoly Artamonov, the Governor of the Kaluga Oblast said following talks with Niš Airport and local authorities. "Due to the political climate, Russians now have to select new holiday destinations, and we see this as an opportunity", the Mayor of Niš, Zoran Perišić, noted. Niš Airport handled over 31.000 passengers in 2015 after commercial flights resumed from the city in June following an almost two year break.

I hope that these flights will materialize, not only as a seasonal, but a year-round routes. If I am not wrong Kaluga is 2hrs away with train from Moscow so it can work as a low-cost option. Nis has the advantage that is well conected to Skopje, and SKP has no direct flights, so it can take Skopje-bound passengers.
