Niš to get new control tower

Thursday, February 4, 2016

The Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency (SMATSA) has announced the construction of a new control tower at Niš Constantine the Great Airport. Work on the new facility is expected to begin in 2017, with the tower scheduled for completion by the end of next year. Furthermore, tender procedures for the installation of a category one instrument landing system (ILS), which provides guidance to aircraft approaching and landing on a runway during low ceilings or reduced visibility due to fog, rain or snow, will be launched by June. Its installation is expected by 2017. Late last year, the Managing Director of Niš Airport, Vladica Djurdjanović, said, "The airport does not have an ILS CAT 1 which is extremely important for airlines and we are working on installing it by 2017, as promised to Wizz Air and other airlines. This investment is worth some two million euros". SMATSA is currently financing a major overhaul of Tivat Airport's control tower and will invest in the construction of a new tower at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport.
