SkyGreece inaugurates Toronto - Zagreb flights

Wednesday, June 24, 2015

SkyGreece Airlines touched down in Zagreb yesterday afternoon, performing its first of seventeen rotations between Toronto and the Croatian capital. With 220 passengers on board the Boeing 767-300ER, the aircraft was greeted by a water cannon salute as well as government and airport officials. SkyGreece’s Regional Manager for Croatia, Mark Mocnaj, said, “We are looking into extending this service, with more weekly flights and a longer season. In addition, we are considering new routes from Canada and the United States to Zagreb and other destinations in Croatia in the future”. Flights will operate once per week until October 7.

ZAGREB - TORONTO SERVICE HISTORY

Scheduled flights between Zagreb and Toronto were launched by JAT Yugoslav Airlines in November 1985. In its last year of normal operations within the former Yugoslavia, during the 1990/91 winter season, the carrier maintained two weekly flights between the two cities, each Thursday and Saturday, with a DC-10 aircraft. Services were operated with a stop in Montreal.

Air Canada also operated flights between Toronto and Zagreb, both nonstop and via Zurich. In its last year of operations to the city, during the winter of 1990/91, the airline maintained four weekly flights, from Thursday through to Sunday. Two of these services were operated with a Boeing 767, while the other two with a Lockheed L1011 TriStar.

Skyservice Airlines launched a seasonal one weekly flight between Toronto and Zagreb in 2007 and operated the service again in 2008 with a Boeing 757. However, flights were not resumed in 2009 and a year later the airline declared bankruptcy.

Air Canada flew 4 weekly ZAG-YYZ on B767/L1015
Pan Am flew 5 weekly ZAG-JFK on A310, making ZAG the ONLY ex-Yu destination flown nonstop on widebody. BEG and DBV were operated on B737/B727 on sections to/ from FRA/MUC.
JAT flew, on DC-10, from ZAG :
      3 weekly JFK
      2 weekly ORD
      1 weekly CLE/DTW
      3 weekly YMX/YYZ
      Malaysian flew 2 weekly B777 to/from KUL
Korean has been flying A330/B777/B747 to/from ICN
JAL operated /and will probably again) B777 to different destinations in Japan.
      Tourism in HR is booming.
Economy in HR is slowly recovering.
OU is profitable again and probably be sold till the end of the year.
And bearing all these in mind, I do predict ZAG to become very soon number 1 airport in ex-Yu when it comes to long-range flights

Air Canada Rouge would have been nice but they fly only to UK (in Europe) North American airlines do not fly much beyond western Europe.

did you see the pitch on Rouge??? Its locco thight in there! lol
I'd rather make a stopover then get crunched on a 10hr+ flight...maybe because I travel more often but still it's the worst aspect of Rouge....
