Adria Airways will launch new flights from its base in Lodz to Paris, as it continues to expand its presence in Poland. Flights between the two cities, which were not initially planned as part of the airline's 2016 summer season operations, will commence on June 2 and run three times per week, each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with a Bombardier CRJ700 aircraft stationed at the airport. The service will be codeshared by Lufthansa. The Slovenian carrier already maintains flights from Lodz to Amsterdam and Munich - six and twelve times per week, respectively. The addition of the new flights are in line with promises made by Adria's new owners, 4K Invest, to continue developing the airline's operations in Poland, along with Slovenia, Albania and Kosovo.
The growth in Poland is part of a revised outlook at Adria to place less of a focus on the carrier's limited home market and to develop as more of a European than a Slovenian air carrier. The airline's former CEO, Mark Anžur, under whose tenure the carrier established bases outside of Slovenia, including Lodz last year, recently said, "Strategically we want to be a European carrier and not only a Slovenian carrier. We are embracing internationalisation. There are many reasons for this. One of them being that the Slovenian market is very limited. The Bombardier is an ideal aircraft for regional routes because it acts as an alternative to low cost airlines which can’t make a profit on certain flights with larger Airbus aircraft".
Earlier this year, Adria announced plans to launch flights from Poland's 21st largest city, Olsztyn, to Munich three times per week starting this summer. The new service is to be promoted later today and put on sale. Lodz is centrally located in Poland and is the country’s third largest city. However, it is just 135 kilometres south-west of the capital Warsaw and the opening of a motorway linking the two cities in 2012 has reduced travel time to approximately just one hour, making it much harder to generate and sustain air services from Lodz. Adria's new CEO, Arno Schuster, recently said, "We look quite positively into this year, expecting good results. Adria's strategy seems like a good fit for a regional carrier. We want to grow with our own existing network and to make it more efficient". Flight details for the new Lodz - Paris service can be found here. After reading the last paragraph my guess is Adria is getting some good subsidies for its Lodz flights

ReplyDeleteMight be worth noting that Lufthansa Consulting provides air service development advice to Lodz Airport so I'm not surprised they approached Adria and that they fly 12x per week to Munich. They get Adria to fly routes they don't want to make losses on but want connecting pax from.

ReplyDeleteWhy should they? MB is just 1 hour from LJ (MB is just 2nd largest city in Slovenia, Lodz is 3rd largest city in Poland). MB could work as LCC alternative airport for LJ, ZAG, GRZ (with proper bus/train routes to this cities).

DeleteMBX could work for charter tourism if Slovenia would stand together, make some good packages and then flights could be made to LJU and MBX so passengers could have trips starting at LJU ending at MBX area and vice versa.
Adria is now for the third year flying twice MAN and LGW in corporation with UK tourist agency and flights are packed.
If they would good hybrid - low cost offers from MBX they eould be fully successful. But for that they would have to base an aircraft there but they are eather not willing to do that but i believe they are just to afraid.

Last year Adria was flying from MBX because they got subsidies, and line without this money was not profitable.
GRZ, ZAG is close enought, so people from this region travels from this destinations.
Whenever I travel I go from ZAG, and I can say many slovenian cars parked in ZAG airport parking are MB, MS, CE.
MBX is only capable to serve summer time charters to Grecce islands and Turkey Antalya... and If nk maribor plays euro or champions league, than supporters and clubs can use MBX :)
Adria is pretty much the only ex-Yu airline that can establish bases outside of their home country seeing as they are the only airline from ex-Yu with a neutral brand, something I think others should have thought of as well. Names like Air Serbia, Croatia Airlines or Montenegro Airlines make it much harder for them to establish their brand anywhere outside of their boarders and at least in the case of Montenegro Airlines it could have been a very good move.

Serbia, Macedonia and Albania seems not to hve any restriction on foreign Carriers to operate flights fm their country to others. Mac and Albania no real own carrier or no national one, Serbia does, still Wizz was allowed to offer a hub. But i think with some commitment of them, that they hve a certain nbr of Serbian staff etc. Also to allow good competitve market, so travellers can benefit.
That happened before Air Serbia was established - during times of Jat Airways. I'm surprised that they still allow Wizz to have a hub in Belgrade, when EU doesn't allow Air Serbia same

Will be interesting to see how all of this plays out and if Adria manages to survive. If I were JP, I would have offered JU to operate PRN-BEG flights for them and why not even TIA-BEG. After all, the latter is better served by a regional jet aircraft than a turboprop.

I think it has to do with Lot's refusal to operate unprofitable routes for an airline that doesn't really value it and that is looking at ways to exploit it. Adria is the perfect candidate given the fact that they are still on the verge of bankruptcy...

I don't get it. LCJ-CDG is a long flight. RZE-CDG is even longer and therefore very expensive to operate (not the least with a CRJ) at the same time as it flies past hubs in for example Germany. Is the point-to-point demand really big enough to cover the costs? I doubt it. Subsidies will have to cover a huge gap. And I don't understand why LH codeshares on this. They can't help with connectivity at either end of the route and it bypasses their own hubs. I guess this is what happens when people in power of EU funds don't understand airline economics and an airline doesn't mind wasting subsidies as long as they get hold of them.
