NEWS FLASH

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport has recorded its busiest year on record, reaching the milestone on December 24, exactly 54 years since its opening. It welcomed 1.676.032 travellers through its doors by December 27, surpassing its record 2008 results when growth was fuelled by Slovenia's presidency of the Council of the European Union. The airport is expected to record annual passenger growth this year of 20.1%, well above initial estimates, which were in the low double digits. "The growth in traffic came as a result of airlines strengthening their operations, and, consequently, offering more competitive fares, which, in turn, has made travel from Ljubljana more accessible. The growth is also attributed to an increase in flights by both domestic and foreign carriers, a favourable economic climate and Slovenia's emergence as a tourist destination", operator Fraport Slovenia said. Adria Airways has so far announced the launch of six new routes from the Slovenian capital next year including Sofia, Bucharest, Hamburg, Geneva, Dubrovnik and Brač.
