Low cost carrier Ryanair is poised to further grow its network across the former Yugoslav markets after announcing new services from Sweden to Sarajevo, Pula and Dubrovnik yesterday. The news came after the Swedish government committed to abolishing the country's aviation tax from July 1, 2025. Ryanair will introduce two weekly flights from Stockholm Arlanda to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital beginning April 1, and from Gothenburg to both Dubrovnik and Pula next July. However, further expansion is expected in the coming period, with the airline anticipated to partake in the ongoing subsidy tender for new routes by the Tourist Board of the Sarajevo Canton. “We have no interest in short-term agreements and deals. During my discussions with the airport’s management and government ministers I said that Ryanair is here to grow. We want to expand in Sarajevo”, Ryanair’s Chief Commercial Officer, Jason McGuinness, previously said.

In Croatia, Ryanair is aiming to strengthen its operations at its new base in Dubrovnik. “The agreement we have is to evaluate the year and based on that work on further growth”, the airport’s CEO, Viktor Šober, recently said. During 2025, Ryanair will enter the fourth year of the five-year Growth Incentive Model it has benefited from so far at Zagreb Airport. To maintain its subsidies, the airline must add at least 75.000 departing passengers during the year, with the potential for further discounts if it surpasses 150.000 additional departing passengers. This provides Ryanair with a strong incentive to increase its traffic out of the Croatian capital each year.
Ryanair is reportedly eyeing Macedonia's ongoing subsidy tender for the launch of new routes. It is yet to enter the market that is dominated by Wizz Air, which is currently facing challenges due to fleet issues and has significantly reduced its operations from the country as a result. In Niš, the CEO of the airport operator hinted at a potential Ryanair expansion, teasing "a pleasant surprise" by the end of the year without offering more details. Meanwhile, discussions between Ryanair and Montenegro’s airport operator have taken place regarding future growth at Podgorica Airport. The Montenegrin Ministry for Transport has confirmed it has reached an agreement with the operator to lower fees, aiming to attract new routes from low cost carriers.

DeleteIt was a good job because without them Zagreb figures still wouldn't have reached pre Covid levels based on the performance of non Ryanair routes. Dubrovnik got the same idea after they were headed for another poor year in 2024 after being well behind 2019 levels in 2023.

ReplyDeleteUnlikely. PRN fees are way too high. And if you actually look at it, PRN management is doing a very bad job. They have attracted very few airlines during their management of the airport. They are content with the airport being served by charter airlines that sell tickets through tour operators. It is the only market in Europe where 80% of tickets are sold through tour operators as if it is the 1970s.

DeleteI dont know why Swiss is ignoring ZRH-SKP as well as GVA-SKP. If the unknown Chair Airlines can fill up their planes to SKP daily with a ticket price of 100 euros, then for sure LX can also make a good profit on this route, plus they are the best airline of LH group and offer many connections in Europe, Asia, North and South America. Edelweiss is also flying four weekly to SKP and yet their prices of the tickets are not under 120 euros one way.
