NEWS FLASH

Airport operator TAV Macedonia has invested one million euros in new CT cabin baggage screening technology and automated security lanes at Skopje Airport, aiming to improve security standards, speed up passenger processing and enhance the overall travel experience. The investment includes two CT screening devices and two automated lanes manufactured by Smiths Detection. According to TAV Macedonia General Manager Nejat Kurt, the new equipment places Skopje Airport alongside major European hubs that already use CT screening technology. The system enables passengers to keep laptops, tablets, mobile phones and liquids inside their cabin baggage during security screening, while also allowing each screening lane to process up to twice as many passengers per hour.

The company said the investment forms part of a broader airport security programme. Last year, TAV Macedonia completed two additional security projects worth a combined 1.93 million euros, including a new video surveillance system and a modern training, testing and certification platform for security personnel. The operator said it will continue investing in technology and infrastructure to strengthen Skopje Airport's position as a regional aviation hub.

Yes true but they expect numbers to grow and thats why they are extending that area. I heard they are also preparing one more restaurant close to that area

This is great news! Does anybody know if this will allow passengers to take liquids in 100ml+ containers to the cabin?

I remember the airports in Belgrade and Amsterdam use similar technology, but they were asked to reverse the decision on no liquid limit. However, I recently flew from Milan Malpensa, and we were allowed to take to the plane liquids with no 100ml limitation. I'm just wondering if something has changed... does anyone know?

Belgrade airport invested money in the equipment only not to use it for what it’s made - they ask you to remove liquids from the bag and then, depending on the security officer some take staff off you, it’s beyond any logic. The only difference they made was that they tell you to leave your laptop or tablet in the bag.

^ the reason they ask you to remove liquids is because the EU, months after deciding liquids don't have to be taken out, decided that only x ray machines from certain manufacturers can be used (I believe just from two) so they would have preferential treatement. And the one BEG uses is not on the list. Many airports protested because they spent millions in buying equipment the EU overnight decided can't be used. That's why initially you did not have to take out liquids in BEG, but it waa reintroduced.

does it mean that the EU will accept the security level at Skopje to be adequate when arriving to an EU country as transit from Skopje ? as it has been until now, passengers need a new security check in the EU country where they are in transit. Totally stupid. Skopje is not part of the One Stop Security program (OSS). of the non-EU ex-yugo countries, I think only Nikola Tesla in Belgrade is.

I work here as a pilot and I go through security every day when at work. I can almost guarantee that this system is not faster than the previous one! Only 3 people at the same time can put their stuff in the container (with previous system more people could stand and pack the containers at the same time) , before you could put a trolley directly on the lane, now you have to use a container for trolleys. Then, containers move slower tjrough the system and make a pause of like 5 seconds after they exit the scanner and before a passenger can take it. Also, there are 2 scanners compared with 3 before. So, it may be bigger, more modern and more expensive system, but I'm almost sure it will be slower than the previous one!
