Adria in major 2016 network expansion

Adria to add new routes from Tirana, Maribor and Ljubljana

The CEO of Adria Airways, Mark Anžur, has said the Slovenian carrier will expand its operations from Tirana, Maribor and Ljubljana next year with the addition of new routes. Speaking to the “Sierra5” portal, Mr. Anžur said the airline will base an aircraft in the Albanian capital next year. Just last month, Adria launched flights from Tirana to Brussels and Paris, complementing its existing services from the city to Frankfurt and Ljubljana. “We have a 5% market share in Tirana and we are the third busiest carrier. Albania is fast growing and traffic is mainly focused on Italy. On the other hand, there is also strong growth in traffic between Albania and Germany”, the CEO said. He added, “Next year we plan to base an aircraft in Tirana and have three daily flights to a number of destinations. We are considering at least two new routes. Italy is a very real possibility”.

On June 1, Adria will resume services from Maribor, on a seasonal summer basis, following a fifteen-year hiatus. A total of three weekly flights will operate between Slovenia’s second largest city and London Southend Airport with the carrier noting its ticket sales on the route are performing “better than expected”. Mr. Anžur reiterated plans to develop Maribor into a low cost hub. “We will fly from Maribor until the end of September. By the end of May, we will decide whether to extend the service. We hope to maintain the same number of flights during the winter and then increase operations to daily next summer season and introduce additional new routes”, the CEO said. He continued, “All conditions are there to create a low cost base in Maribor and station an aircraft in the city next year. Flights to Germany are being considered and we see great potential there due to Graz’s close proximity. Even Spanish holiday destinations would be of interest. In the long-term, Maribor would be very appealing to eastern markets because of its short distance to many tourist destinations and would be interesting to Russians”.

Adria’s CEO has again confirmed that the carrier will expand its operations from its main hub in Ljubljana next year. “We are already planning new flights for the 2016 summer season from Ljubljana. For us, these are interesting destinations as they are important business hubs and offer the possibility of connecting flights. The Iberian Peninsula will certainly be among them. Even Italy would be of interest”, Mr. Anžur said. The Slovenian carrier plans to hit two million passengers per year and see a 220 million euro turnover by 2020, supported by an expanding fleet and several new bases across Europe. This summer season, the airline has already launched new flights from Tirana to Brussels and Paris, from Ljubljana to Stockholm and Berlin and from Lodz to Amsterdam.

Why don't other ex yu airlines base aircraft in Priština or tirana if theyre such lucrative markets?

Because they have other airports to fly from. Unlike Adria. Just because others don't do it, doesn't mean it's wrong :)

Simple, they can't be everywhere at the same time from the beginning. You have a political situation in the Balkans that has been pretty fucked up for the last 25 years.....finally the old/crazy politicians are getting out of the game and things can slowly get back to a common interest for the Region.

  3. Good for Adria even though they should have suffered the same fate as Malév and Cyprus Airways.

However, looking at their network, I noticed that their growth is mostly in places with limited or no competition. What would be interesting to see is how well they would cope with some real competition, for example if Wizz Air was to launch Tirana flights (to Beauvais and Charleroi).

I know that Transavia is launching Orly-Tirana flights but they are hardly a fierce competitor.
Adria's position in Tirana is further reinforced by the fact that both Podgorica and Ohrid (closest competitors) lack a lowcost alternative.

Why would it be interesting to see how they would cope against real competition?! What has that to do with it? They are smart, they have found a "hole in the market" and they are filling it, it would be utterly stupid of them to get in the same race as everybody else, just common business sense. Since they now have their own race, everybody else has to compete against them as 2nd string.

    2. It would be interesting to see how they would cope with real competition because that would be the best indicator of how healthy Adria is.
A company that can solely operate in environments of reduced competition is not a healthy one.
We all know that it's only a matter of time before Wizz Air expands in Pristina and Tirana. These are two markets which are ideal for them.

Furthermore, let's not kid ourselves. If Wizz Air was to launch these flights it's Adria that would instantly become a 2nd tier airline. This is because of Wizz Air's extremely strong brand awareness in our region. They have already indirectly tapped into the Albanian market via their Ohrid flights.

    4. No, I do not support the construction of a second runway in Belgrade. I supported the idea of building it if BEG would have to be completely shut down during the period of renovation of the current runway.

Can they find the escamotage to robber us again (another way not the subsidy bonus that is used already)?

    Tirana come on!
Lufthansa would eat the market it it's profitable.
Italian airlines are covering well the Albania- Italy routes.
No revenue place for Adria there unless it's giving away most of seats as cheasp tickets that in SLovenia we can't have :(

At the and of the day the only thing that counts is to pick the money and grow. The first is always the first and if you have a good idea and a strategy how to gain that...why not. Basically in this competitive market is that you can get some advance and use it. No matter how. ..you just have to be different and unique. As soon others realise that you model works you have already pick the cream. Adria's model is not to fight with others but use the opportunity of the current situation. This is unique way how to strengthen itself.

You must be very flexible these days. No business is for ever. May bloggers here lough at Adria's way. How it's picking peanuts around. I assume that most here do not have their own business and that they don't know how to be on the market and make money to feed their workers or own family. Business is to make money and profit with assets or without. The most important is good brand, service and knowledge. So I think that only Adria did jump over the gap and try to do something without any more state protection as all jokers were already used. It is by itself now and it has to prove that it can survive alone as there wouldn't be any more taxpayers money but just banking loans.

Maribor - Southend Airport 3x x year in winter season? No way! (if income is important)
Lodz and other adventures are temporary (1- 2 years?) will be shutdown too.

Slovenia-Spain can work but with low prices (most seats
    for peanuts).
Adria can be an excellent Ryanair feeder: Ljubljana/Maribor - Bergamo now would work for sure 100%. Cheap Janezi flying via Bergamo to destinations in Spain, Expo in Milano, Italians that have vacation in summer, weekendbreaks in Ljubljana in autumn etc.

Adria is soon out of cash...all assets are sold. Last CR2 can be scrapped but not sold. Employees will not allow further salary cuts, so either they do some real operational profits or they soon will be gone. Due to their size no one will buy them. Anžur talks really a lot. By 2020 most probably 0 passengers will be transported. Maribor is ok for some charters and JU should operate a daily ATR connection but thats about it.
Their only chance is to merge with OU and YM, keep name Adria, be home in LJU ZAG ZAD RJK PUY SPU DBV TIV TGD SJJ TIA PRN and SKP and get some foreign investor, maybe QR. Then u re kind of semi interesting investor product

    1. Yeah but we are talking about the Balkans here, do you think people in both Zagreb and Podgorica would be willing to have their airline brands replaced with Adria?

Personally I think it's a good idea (in theory) but don't know how well it would work in reality.

It would not work. Its Balkans. People rather loose than they would opt for such a solution
Adria is a neutral name and it is something people have in positive mind memory when thinking of the region. The Adriatic sea is linked with water sun holidays fresh fish door to the world lifestyle good wine vacation love stories

JU520 has absolutely right. Consumers always make brand perception with their experiences. No German or Chinese care about who is the owner of an airline. His aim was to have a great holiday at the Adria coast. Do you know who is the owner of your favorite brand? Probably not. As long you will be satisfied with it you will use it. So positive experience and nice association make it relevant.

What i think it would be better, is EU-, or even Far-Eastern investor, instead of QR. And no LH. Considering the name, Adria could work, and "national(istc)" issue could be solved in a way that, depends on where the planes are based, they have Adria Slovenia, Adria Croatia or Adria Montenegro, written on them, respectively.

It's funny how some people here get their panties in a bunch because Adria is having success in Albanian markets. Obviously their flights so far have been successful if they keep adding more. Get over it and Adria has competition in both Paris and Brussels. And even Air Serbia is having success. The Albanian markets are under served at the moment after the demise of Belle Air so it's normal to see expansion of flights now.
